yeah it's a bit tough.  actually the hardest part (and the reason y my region is taking much longer to develop) is that i'm this kinda perfectionist stickler for detail meaning that i need to try to get as many things exact as i can (i'm talking zoning - i even check w/ nyc.gov dept. of zoning for that one! - , building landmarks, hospitals and schools, transit including streets, roads, highways ...)  that's hard also doing this sr. year esp. now amidst finals!  14.gif

but yeah it started out low density.  i think the biggest prob. was commute time.  i had to use the mod to get people to be able to go all the way downtown to work.  so then my commercial demand rose.

speaking of which.  one thing that hindered my city from growing was the need for airports.  now the thing is, nyc only has three major airports, none of which r in manhattan.  is there anyway to mod a building or a park or something to have the qualities of an airport to meet the commercial demand while keeping it like 1x1 or 3x3, also w/o looking like an airport?  if anyone knows how to come up w/ that it'd be great!

To mod an airport, could you just open up an airport lot in the Lot Editor, erase all the props/buildings, shrink it down to like 3x3 and save as a different name? I'm not sure if building properties are tied to lots or tied to the building itself. It would be cool if you could make like a model of Port Authority and have it function as an airport in-game. Between that and Penn Station you could put airport-functioning buildings in that aren't really possible with the current structures (really no way to reproduce the underground Penn Station with multiple underground railroad tracks coming in, all with Madison Sq. on top of it just by using railroad tracks and stations)

Is that the Rockefeller Centre from the game? It looks just like the real thing!9.gif (Not like the CN Tower, whose base doesn't look like it does in the game)

Do you have the World Financial Center complex? It'd be cool if you could find something resembling the Winter Garden.

I'm trying to do Manhattan myself and have a few questions:

    1) Do you have Broadway as one continuous street or is it represented here and there by diagonals? I imagine this is one hard street to sim.

    2) I have trouble aligning Grand Central Station with the axis of Park Ave. I have Park Ave as an "avenue" but only one side of the avenue lines up with the center portal of GCS whereas in real life GCS is dead on. I iamgine this was probably because the GCS landmark in the game was developed before the Rush Hour pack and was meant to align with a road axis. By the way, I believe the eagle is supposed to face South but each time I try to plop GCS it wants to face north (towards the Met Life building). I end up hvaing to bulldoze the street to get the eagle facign south and then rebuilding it afterwards.

    3) Were you able to simulate the two-tier roads at GCS?

    4) Did you use the Main Library building for the New York Public Library? I have each street in Midtown Manhattan represented and in real life the NYPL takes up two blocks along 5th from 40th to 42nd but when I plop the main library icon into that space it looks puny (I have 4 tiles in between each numbered street), espeacilly when compared with the expanse of Bryant Park.

By the way, for the avenues, I put down two one-way streets side by side. I figure that Maxis will eventually come out with a modification that allows for one-way streets to have more than 2 lanes thus I want to leave enough space for that and in the meanwhile have the traffic patterns as close to reality as possible. Speaking of one-way streets, were you able to link them to other cities in the region? I seems to me that only roads, avenues, and highways can be linked.

His work is totally awsome. I grew up in Ridgewood, Queens and spent a lot of time in Manhatten.

One thing that I would love to see Maxis come out with though is the ability to actually set the routes buses and trains (subways included) would follow (kinda like in Traffic Giant, which was put out by Jo Wood). Anybody got any ideas on this?

Also, could anybody tell me where I can go to download actual US areas (maps etc.) made by the government?

Superlative work. The similarity between your in-game aerial shot and the satellite photo is amazing.

Just curious: do the in-game traffic patterns resemble the RL Manhattan ones?

If Simtropolis gave an award for best real city reproduction, you would win hands down. It's very difficult to reproduce and city using SC4, but the NY/NJ metro area has to be up there with the hardest, and you've nailed it. Is your population anywhere near the 11 million metro population yet???
