I just had this thought 30 seconds before I started to type out this topic.

Why not make the new SimCity compatible with the 3D TV's for a more immersive experience?

Some may call this gimmicky but I would love to see this new game with all the latest bells and whistles.

Wouldn't you?

2 color 3D anaglyph (old fashioned glasses tinted green and red) is easier

Making Sim City literly 3D is an interesting concept, but I don't think enough people have 3D capable monters/TVs, so for EA to consider this there would have to be more demand for it. The idea is cool but, since I don't have a 3d Tv myself I don't really care if they made it 3D or not.

I'm not sure as I've never tried since I don't have the correct monitor or glasses, but I was going about through my computer and I discovered that my graphics card has 3D capability, and there was a list of games that would support 3D, from either a medium or excellent way (as rated by the card), anyway, even games as old as the first four Tomb Raider games seem to support 3D, and the latter two Sims games too. I repeat, I'm not sure how accurate the information is, but that is according to my graphics card, and I'm not spending over £100 just to find out.

I would love to see it in 3d, and I also disagree with the idea that it's a "gimmick." It's the next step in the evolution of content delivery.

The idea would definitely be insync with Maxis' graphical approach, that is: "a world you could reach into, and touch".

So as long as it's financially reasonable, and added as an optional feature, then why not?

3D works at the chipset level on PCs, not the application level. nVidia graphics cards have had 3D capabilities for quite a while now and most of the ATI/AMD cards that have Eyefinity support it too (Like my HD6870). Many old 3D games have 3D Vision compatibility simply because of where the technology is implemented. It's not like with the consoles, which need the support patched in by the manufacturer and then coded in and optimised by the developer.

Generally all you need is a timing device and a compatible display.

As long as Maxis doesn't stray too far away from conventions with regards to the camera, SimCity (2013) will have no issues with it.

(Aside: SC4 doesn't support 3D vision because of its Orthographic Camera (a camera that does not show Perspective, A key requirement for 3D vision))

Even if SimCity has realistic perspective, do you really want to wear the dorky, old fashioned, red and green glasses that devoted Minecraft players wear (that they get from cereal boxes, cheap 3D movies, and the like)?

^Or you can wear a high end pair that costs hundreds of dollars. This is only one of the reasons why I hate 3D TVs. The other one is that it hurts my eyes.

Nowadays, 3D TVs without glasses are comparable in price to those that require active shuttle glasses and the shuttle glasses are expensive and require recharging so for many, glasses free 3D TVs are superior. All you really need to allow 3D is the ability to send signals for 2 views with different perspectives.

Those high end TV's/Monitors can take a Minecraft 3D (2 color) anaglyph and display it as a glasses free 3D scene.

Only in the US. Glass Free TVs here still cost far too much. a 42" Glasses Free TV here costs as much as a name-brand 60" Shutter-style 3D TV (Which coincidentally, last time I checked came with two pairs of glasses and a 4GB Xbox 360 slim), and that's when they're on sale.

All 3D TVs that require glasses come with a pair or 2 of glasses but replacing those when they get broken is what will cost you. Looking up "3D TV" on Froogle, I found several models of Active Shutter 3D TVs that are more expensive than glasses free TVs so I would say that they are comparable (glasses free TVs are more expensive than active shutter type TVs of equal quality but the difference is small enough that you can compare multiple TVs to get you the feature set you want).

At this point in time, not very practical. I certainly would not buy a new monitor just to support that. I am monocular and don't see in 3D anyway.

Again, only in the US. It's disgustingly common here for a $4200 3D TV to only come with one pair of glasses, or with some brands, no glasses at all, requiring you to purchase them separately (Usually the brands with the cheaper TVs but dearer glasses).

all this talk about 3DTVs. Do people really play PC games on their giant TV screens now? Really, TVs are meant to be enjoyed by a group of people, that's why the large screen. Monitors are meant to be enjoyed on a more personal level.

Besides, doesn't NVIDIA support 3D for PC games. as long as you have the requirements such as a 120 Hz monitor and their hardware, then you could enjoy 3D. it's basically gives 3D capability to even older titles. SimCity 2013 shouldn't have a problem.

I think the discussion moved there because 120Hz monitors are still in the minority and the nVidia 3D kit was rather expensive last time I looked at it.

I also mentioned in my first post in this thread that yes, nVidia supports 3D on all its modern graphics cards and new AMD cards with Eyefinity (The six-monitors from a single card thing) tend to support it too, though they rely on a 120Hz monitor with a timing device (Glasses and Infra-red transmitter) or a 3D TV which has both built-in.

I know several people who have TVs hooked up to their computers and use them as monitors. I think it would be kind of cool, think of the view you could get of your cities!

I remember watching 3d tv back in 1996 without glasses. It had problems which is why it wasn't released back then (even more expensive than now, a screen the size of an ipad, and heavy screen tearing effect, but definitely achieved.)

But these days we've even got the Nintendo 3DS. Even if 3d may not be accessible to everyone right now, it certainly will be before the next iteration of Sim City. (LCDs were just beginning starting to replace CRTs back when Sim City 4 was released, and already before Sim City 5 LCDs are now starting to be phased out for newer technologies.)

Yeah, but did you see how poor the 3DS sold? It was looking like a failure before they dropped the price to more acceptable levels and actually added some decent games. 3D TVs sales are bad...they might as well add in a "Stoplight Customizer", which would be more useful than 3D. >.<
