Shocking sinking of a cruise ship

These monstrous cruise vessels are top heavy. If it was a simple grounding as the article states, how did it get a 10 meter rip in the hull?

The proceedings of the Admiralty Court will be interesting. It will be better for the captain if he went down with the ship.

My link Sounds like the Titanic but not quite.

I'm surprised that people had been on the ship for days without doing a muster drill. Usually that happens in the first 6 hours. It's not a difficult drill: get your life jacket, go to your muster station, listen to the crew tell you what to do in case of an emergency.

It sounds like the crew here did not have it's act together. The ship was in trouble, there were people standing at the appropriate place, ready to get on the lifeboats, and the crew wouldn't let them get into them.

Apparently, it was 50 meters, not 10 D:

My condolences go out to the families of those killed in this sinking.

Sounds like the Titanic but not quite.

I feel that there was great carelessness on the part of the captain and the crew. The basic difference between the two incidents is that the shore was only 400 meters away.

Seems overweening, misplaced confidence spelled the doom of both vessels. When I was learning about going down to the sea in ships, the word was the sea is not against you, but you are against the sea.

By not ordering an assembly and seeing that it was carried out the captain forfeits his master's certificate forever.

The captain has been arrested on charges of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, and abandoning ship.

For leaving the ship before he was sure his passengers were safe, this guy should be put in an oubliette and actually forgot. The captain is responsible for each and every soul on board, and this creep was more interested in his own skin than his duty.

Everyone who has ever had charge of any vessel at sea larger than a row boat has had that drilled into their heads. Remind me not to take a trip with Carnival Cruise Lines. Ever.

So far, they have found 2 survivors aboard the ship. Good for them, not so good for the captain. He was responsible for getting them off the ship and did not.

I took a Carnival Cruise once and will never do so again. It was far too noisy. There was not a quiet place on the ship, even in the cabin.

This appears to be a result of negligence. The actions of the captain are a little appalling. I would NOT be happy if I was on that cruise ship and this happened. That guy's in for some trouble. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

I guess the ship isn't salvageable. What an enormous waste. And sad about the loss of life, but fortunately it was at least very minimal considering what it could have been.

Captain Turner said that he was washed off his bridge as the Lusitania went down. I believe him. This numbnut captain of the Costa Concordia is full of it, for sure.

This former maritime master is twisting in the wind. It will be interesting if his bosses abandon him completely or try to wait until the wind blows over. As far as going to sea in ships, he will be nothing more than a passenger from now on, I hope. In the good old days of sail he would have been flogged round the fleet.

The hotel staff could only repeat what the bridge was telling them.

Not much of a consolation to the 16+ people who lost their lives.

Apparently it is suggested there were unregistered passengers on board.

Is that a euphemism for stow aways? Did these persons survive?

I believe his point was, had the ship been further out to sea, no one could have swam to shore, the ship would be totally underwater, and there would have been more deaths than we have now.

Now this makes one wonder ... if this company has been cutting maintenance expenses. Why should it take the well-trained crew hours to put out an electrical fire? What kind of crew are they hiring? Transients off the pier? Would you sail with this outfit? I sure wouldn't.

Something that seems to have been missed.

One of this companies ships was refused permission to dock in Argentina recently because it had previously visited the Falklands.

Glad to see that on this vessel everybody is OK. It is now under tow to the Seychells. It's handy that they are still there.

As for the Concordia, there are still 7 people missing.

Well, the company has enough problems without getting involved in the gunboat diplomacy of the South Atlantic. I expect they will be out of business soon. A forensic audit of that outfit is due. It is sounding like their policies on maintenance and hiring need a good airing out.

Particularly as the ship is in the process of being broken up. The last thing that I heard they had found some more bodies.

Admiralty court proceedings seem to leak like a sieve.

Of course the Captain denies responsibility, but he isn't much of a captain in my humble opinion. The Collision Regulations clearly state that the the master of the vessel, in this case the squirming Italian, is responsible for every soul on board as well as the good conduct of the ship at sea.

I wonder how this turkey ever got his master's certificate? In Italy, no doubt. This case should blow the Italian ministry responsible for maritime affairs to smithereens. It is hard to cover up that well documented man-made reef off the coast.

I've always been taught that in the case of a sinking ship, the captain has to go down with it. It seems that this tradition does not apply to Italian captains..
