Ah, welcome to the BAT - Open Discussion forum! Nice to see you here. :)

From what I can see, the water tower model looks rather complete and realistic to me - just wondering: Does it have an entrance somewhere? I mean, somehow people must be able to go up for maintenance purposes, so there should be some way of accessing the tower. Also, could you show a picture that shows the model from SC4 view so we can check whether the proportions tranlate well into the game? You may have to compensate for the notorious squashing effect.

Do you have a real-life counterpart for this model, by the way?

Hi welcome to the forums,

Rather to add pictures as files add them using the "insert image" option, first you have to upload them to something like Photobucket and just use the link.

As TWrecks mentioned a rendered preview is often more useful than a view from the viewport.

Overall the model looks ok, I would wait to see it textured.

Just to add something quickly, make a preview picture of it, and with textures. Like this it looks.....sorry, not very good. It could use a base, some kind of a cement base would surely improve it. Then add a ladder and some more details. A good BAT needs time to create, sometimes weeks. If you use a few hours you can be sure that it is NOT worth uploading and getting good comeback, unless you're a real Pro, which you aren't. (yet)

mrb ;)

Well you can start here,HOWEVER, once you find a base texture you should use Photoshop (or gimp)to edit it and adapt it to your model. You should try to create your own textures...For example you can add noise, stains, gradients, worn marks, adjust the tone, contrast, saturation, brightness...

I guess you didn't read MrBison advice carefully the idea of having a thread is to show progress BEFORE uploading something...so that you can tweak and improve your model before it is released. There is no need to rush!

Put it this way a car company is unlikely to release a car for sell without proper testing. They wont say to the consumers buy it, use it and it has flaws don't worry let us know what it is and we'll make a version 2 for you to buy...

I was impatient when I started, but its a habit you have to try to get out of. If you stay in the impatient stage, it reflects on your work. Just try to slow down, take time on the model. I was told when I was impatient, its not a job or requirement, its a hobby, and just take your time, nobody is rushing you. Your model would have been really good, had you kept at it. I hope you can achieve great things batting, but batting along with basically everything, requires patience, and time.

Best of all luck in the future,

Yeah, the STEX has been around for roughly 8 years, so it ain't gonna disappear tomorrow. ;)

One thing you could do: Go look for the water tower you like best. The one where you say "Boy, this is so awesome that I'd download and use it any time faster than you can say 'BAT'."

Then try your best and see how close you can get to that quality. You know, as long as you think "well, that other water tower actually still looks noticeably better than mine", chances are that potential downloaders will think the same.

Of course it's a learning curve, and it's perfectly normal that the first efforts aren't as great as some stuff released by others with years of experience. When I look back at my first lots... ^^

However, patience really is important. Your second version was already a huge improvement over the first version, and I bet if you don't rush, a V3 would be even better. Don't hesitate to ask if you think that something doesn't quite look satisfying. Relax. Simtropolis is here, and so are we. Have fun tweaking and refining everything. Treat yourself to the fun of comparing with previous steps and enjoying how much better your work has become. :)

Well said and I recommend that you also understand it, riane.

Being impatient brings you nothing more than more "bad" comments. You didn't listen to what I said, take your time, show us what you've been done and improve where and what's necessary before uploading to the STEX. Bad models will only hurt your BATting reputation and once that is gone, all your work will be considered as "failed" more or less. And believe me, a bad reputation always stays and is seldom improved! Most BATters give up BATting before.

Your newest upload is a lot better, but still not good enough to be considered as "generally worth downloading" by most of the Players.

Don't upload everytime you make an improvement. This thread is here to help you with creating a "worthwhile" upload. Listen to what we have to say, suggest and comment, we are the ones that will probably use it in our gameplay. We're here to help you get better to make good models.

    Good luck ;)

    mrb

Read what T-Wrecks said above, excellent suggestion! And also have a look at other BATter's threads and understand that a good BAT does not fall from the sky in one day, whether you're impatient or not.

Criticism is not necessarily bad, especially when the intentions are to help you, and what you received are suggestions based on experience. People often feel attacked and take things personal when is not. At the end is up to you to take the advice or not...

Well, you know, in the end, it comes down to a personal decision:

Either your focus is on doing what you want, how you want it, with nobody "interfering" (or interacting, for that matter) in any way, and then releasing your stuff on the STEX, no matter what the ratings look like. There is absolutely nothing wrong about that. It's a hobby, it should be fun and interesting for you. You should enjoy it. :) In this case, however, a BAT thread is of rather limited use.

    In summary:

+ : No need to face any critique

    - : probably mediocre ratings, less help to get better

Or maybe you are more ambitious and would like to "grow", to become better at what you are doing? In this case, feedback can be very important, and a BAT thread can make perfect sense.

    In short:

+ : Much input, help, and feedback => much potential to get better

    - : Sometimes someone will say they don't like something you made, or that they think you could have done better

My personal opinion: If you release stuff to the public, you'll get feedback anyway - either someone says "Meh, could have been better" in a STEX comment and rates 2/5, or someone comments in your BAT thread and says "Meh, you could improve this and that by applying [technobabble]..."

I guess STEX comments are easier to ignore, but comments in your BAT thread give you the chance to make improvements before you release and help you get better ratings and more downloads on the STEX.

In any case, remember nobody is criticising you as a person, and if I catch anyone saying mean things like "You suck" or "Your BATs suck" or "you'd better give up", rest assured that I'll have a word with that user. ;) Don't take a comment like "if you rush things, the result is likely to be mediocre" as an attack against you, because it isn't. It doesn't mean "you rushed it, that means you did it wrong, and that means you're stupid". It's an advice: "If you want your stuff to be really great, be prepared to spend some time on it". You're totally free to heed this advice - or not. It's your thread, it's your BATs, and it's your life. And, as I said, it's only a hobby, and enjoying it is the most important part.

Another point: Nobody here is biting. I can assure you that the ones who spend most time giving advice and suggestions, the ones who scrutinise your BATs the hardest, are also the first ones who will high-five you mentally as soon as you have released a five-star BAT. :) I know I will. You have made tremendous progress in a very short amount of time, and I think you have huge potential. I believe that you can release such a five-star BAT.

No one is critizing badly here. All that can only help you to become a "good" BATter, and not one of those that we rate 1 while not even look at it because we know it ain't worth downloading.... ;)

    Good luck
