Yeah the BMW 850 has to be one of the sexiest cars around indeed. That model just seems to be timeless.

Another car that's really easy on my eyes is the Alfa Romeo 33 (americans might not know this car), it's actually really cheap here in Europe and loads of fun to drive. I used to own a red one:

I'm pretty happy that one of my dream cars is so affordable :D

ExiL3: Actually, most old cars aren't that bad at emissions, provided they're taken care of and tuned properly. The vast majority of the 60s and 70s vintage cars I see on the road around here (Seeing as I live in Southern California, there are a lot.) don't pump out gobs of smoke, mainly because their owners take care of them. A carburetor will never be as efficient or precise as fuel injection, but when properly tuned for the right air/fuel mixture the engine will burn almost one hundred percent of what it's fed through the barrels. My car, while a guzzler, has passed smog every year she's been tested.

And for what it's worth, the gross polluters I typically see are the mid-80s to early 90s Hondas, Acuras, Toyotas, and Nissans that low-income people bought for a couple hundred bucks and never bother to keep up. Those things burn oil, have misfiring cylinders galore (Which effectively cripples the tiny four cylinder motor), and often have inefficient or just plain inoperative emissions controls. Those are the cars that should be taken off the road, but they won't be, because they're considered emissions-friendly by the California Air Resources Board simply because they're a Honda or Nissan.

About the acceleration and speed issue, that's a question of the power-to-weight ratio. Modern cars have the benefit of ultra-lightweight bodies, which lowers the weight down to just over a ton or so. However, the bodies are very easily damaged because of their light weight. Older cars, while they are heavy because of the large amounts of steel, often withstand impacts much better because the bodies are so strong, and they're a body-on-frame type construction, not unibody like today's passenger cars. Lighten up that body by putting on a fiberglass hood, or ripping out everything but the driver's seat, and you'll have a car with a stupifying quarter mile time.

Anyway, I'm getting a bit too edgy on this. I guess it's my denial of changing times.
quote>

Belive it or not, its a lot safer in a new plastic car than an old car made out of steel. The answer to why they look like garbage piles after a crash is because the frame did its job of dampening the impact. A steel body dosnt dampen the impact merly as much(and this is why they take less damage) but for the people inside it can be the difference of life and death.

After all, what do you want to run well & efficiently after a highspeed colision, you or your car?

As for pollution, im not the best to say, but i do know that the bigger the engine, in general the more polution. Now would a tiny V4 or a massive V8 produse the most polution? personaly, id guess the V8. And since petrol is so cheap in USA, people dont notice the petrol dissapereing.(all yanks say: Hay the petrol is more expencive here than in several years!!!) yeah, so be it, but as the rates stand today, i would still get 3 liters of petrol in the states for the price of 1 liter in sweden.

As for SUV's, there pointless, especially in large cities. they should be banned from urban areas really, there just plain nasty while idling.

Thats my oppinions ^^

xiziz:

I know and understand the concept behind crumple zones, and I realize they are a benefit to the unibody construction.  I know that I'd probably want some in my car, and actually do have a couple places where the body will collapse and absorb impact.  However, in the 70s body construction was still about big-n-huge, so my car's zones are just at the front grille before the radiator, and in the rear just before the fuel tank.

However, the vast majority of accidents are not high-speed or high-impact collisions.  They are fender benders, where speeds are typically under forty miles per hour, and impact is relatively light.  I've actually been hit twice in such a manner, once rear-ended at five/ten miles per hour, and once clipped by a driver running a red at about twenty.  Both times my car took the damage, and actually hit the other car back.  I laughed when I saw that my broken turn signal cover crumpled in an entire door.

As far as pollution, it's not so much a question of emmisions any more.  Again, if an engine is properly tuned and maintained, a massive older V8 will produce emissions comparative to a modern engine with smog controls up the wazoo.  They will consume more fuel of course, since there's a much larger displacement, but that's a basic physical requirement of such engines.  It's when an engine is not maintained that it begins to produce excessive emissions and become a gross polluter.

In any case, cars aren't the main contributor to the greenhouse effect anyway.  The biggest one is the massive livestock farms, with all those cattle.  Cows produce a huge amount of methane, and that's not regulated by the Air Resources Board.  Heh.

The SUV thing bothers me too, but mostly from a utility and common sense standpoint.  They are useful out on the boonies, where you might actually need a large, high clearance vehicle to get around on rudimentary roads, but I agree that there is little use for them in the city.  The vast majority of people I see driving these things are women who think they're safe, when they're probably some of the unsafest vehicles around.  One t-bone collision at a high enough speed and that thing's going to roll, guaranteed.  Personally, I think those women should just get one of the new station wagons that are available.  Much lower to the ground which gives much more control and safety, while having the same or in some cases more cargo room.  The Dodge Magnum is a good one, and has gobs of power with its emissions friendly Hemi engine.  They just don't want to be seen driving one though, mostly due to the old idea that a station wagon has to be wood panelled and have an engine that's been repeatedly kicked in the balls under the hood.  Hell, I'd drive one of the new Magnums if someone offered one to me.  Those things are actually pretty nice.

See?  I don't hate all new cars. 9.gif

Actually, i still thing most american cars are Big-n-Huge, exept Ford maby, atleast the fords roling the european streets.
Though a 40mph crash is still quite the forces, im not used to mph but kph, and ive seen cars crashed in 55kph, Both old and new, and i have to say, id rather have been in the newer car.
Now 55kph is not fast at all, but the damage is huge, since the weight of the car gets multiplyied by 40 at this speed.

As far as i know, 55mph = 110Kph, but im unsure. Most accsidets over here are singles, caused by bad weather or people driving to fast and loosing control... Or head-ons, on all the highspeed 2lane roads. 2 cars hitting eachother at 110kph isnt prettey...

A Properly maintained and tuned engine will always be fuel efficient, well, if tuned for fuel efficency that is ^^
And from what i know of, 25% of Usa's co2 emmisions are from Personal cars, that is, excluding freight-traffic and lorries. and Usa is already way above the quota it should be on, even if the kyoto was never signed by usa.

Though, the recent market of downstream cars is very doubtful, they all lookalike, no matter if there from Japan, France, Britan, Italy, Germany, America. they all just seem to be meatbally now. there is the odd one that isnt, but manufacturers dont seem to want to make cars that look specal anymore, wich is a bit booring.
I also quite like the older models, but European ones, the american once, although powerful, and beautiful in many instances. There just so large, id have to crawl to a standstill to get around a Motorwaycorner over here.
But if i ever im going to hire a car over in the states, im sure gonna make it something worth remembering. Yankies do have a good rep over here, but not for driving on our roads.

I Guess i should add the Carrerra to my list there too, that is a very nice car.

^^

Yeah, that's part of the reason I don't like newer cars.  They all look the same!  I swear, sometimes I think Honda, Toyota, and Nissan are all owned by one boring dude who has no sense of taste.

At least the Big Three (Ford, GM, and Chrysler) are coming out with some fresh new designs lately.  The new Mustang is growing on me, especially with its retro throwbacks, and I've already gone on about the Dodge Magnum.  The new Charger bugs me though, since it's a four door and looks almost exactly like the Chrysler 300.  There are some subtle bits about it that I like, like the agressive-looking headlamp assembly and the grille.  GM needs to work on their designs, though.  Even though they're different from the rest of the others, they're not agressive enough.  The Pontiac GTO should be fearsome, not look like a Sunfire.  However, that Saturn convertable looks nice, and it doesn't seem like it's that bad of a car.  Small engine, but I admit, some smaller engines have some good pickup and go.

Well, the new fords ive seen are the smallish European lookalikes that seem to be everywhere, there all just this rond peice of plastic, and thats ugly. As for the American big ones(Mustang, Dodge, Charger), you dont se them on the streets here so much(Imagine driving a Mustang into Stockholm or one of the other major European city cores, that must be a nightmare), Though the new models also look quite rounded, and i think thats the new trend of cars, they should all look spacy and Futuristic with their curves and... gahh ^^

As for Renault/Fiat/Pegout/Volkswagen/Citroen (not to mentiona a lot more of them) could all be the same company, as their models look EXACTLEY the same exept for their badges... :/

You're not alone; I love Chevettes. If I hadn't been given my dad's old Oldsmobile station wagon for college, I'd have either bought a Chevette or Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon. How can you not love something that gets 40 miles per gallon and can hold more stuff than a fullsize sedan?

My absolute dream car is the Chrysler ME-412, but since they axed that project I guess I'd have to lust after a Chrysler Firepower, which is likely to make it to production. It sits on a Viper chassis with a 6.1L Hemi and a beautiful body.

    Chrysler ME-412 Prototype:
    ME412.JPG

    Chrysler Firepower Concept:
    autoshow-Chrysler_Firepower.jpg

I like cars that are fast yet practical and economical. The Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Omni GLH (goes like hell), Dodge Spirit R/T, and VW Golf GTi are all examples of this. They all do 0-60 in the 6 second range or less and can get 30 miles per gallon on long trips. Plus, all four are known to be reliable cars. I suppose a Dodge Ram SRT-10 would be a fun and practical vehicle, but I wouldn't want to pay to feed it.

My favorite of the bunch is the Dodge Spirit R/T. It is a regular 4 door early 90's sedan, but it has a Stage III turbo on a 2.2L I4 that cranks out 224HP and a five speed manual. It hits 60 in under six seconds. In other words, it can take down a Camaro or Mustang from the same era with no trouble.

I wish I could get one of those SMART cars. They wouldnt do to well in the U.S. though, with all those SUV's and mini-vans, it would be squashed like a bug. Also, you wouldnt get far in the snow and ice in the North.

When I was in Paris I first saw them, and I almost got more excited when I spotted one of those little cars, than when I saw the Eiffel tower. I spotted it across a busy street, and started running out into traffic to see it, and almost caused a major car wreck. It was funny, a few times I heard an American or Canadian voice yell, LOOK! How cute!!! , or something like that, and turned to see them running to take a picture too.

Smarts are amazing... I wouldn't be too worried around SUV's because they sit high up apparently, but around big transport trucks...14.gif. They're supposed to be good in the snow though... when they came to Canada all of these tests were put on them and results say they're good in the snow.. as long as you put 4 snow tires on them.

As for gas, you can only get diesel ones in Canada and it costs about $18 to fill it up... I'm almost certain that they'd have non-diesel ones, so are the diesel ones common in Europe, or strictly regular gas?

Though that yellow one... it's very.... bright...

I didnt know there were Smarts in Canada. Ive been to every Canadian province except Nunavut, and ive never seen one, although I dont spend too much time in big cities where they would be. Maybe they are ok to drive in winter in Canada, Canadians know how to plow streets, but in Michigan anyway, there are few plows. I  frequently struggle to drive in knee deep snow in my VW, without a plow in site where I live. Plus Michigan roads have many potholes that could swallow a little car like that. Once, a woman tried to drive a little car like that, a Yugo, across our Mackinaw bridge, and the Yugo blew off the bridge in the wind and she died.

    I kinda like the yellow...

I read in Car & Driver that they were going to introduce Smarts to America sometime in the next few years.  Don't know if that is still on track or not, though.

Actually, I live in Texas but smart cars should go on sale in the USA in 2006 according to this news report: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5217861 . When it go on sale in Houston, I'll be one of the very first customers purchase a smart car because 60 mpg with lower maintance then a hybrid and it's remarkablely safe. 9.gif

Heck look at the walnut frame it alot stronger than most vans and large SUVs.

Same in this side impact crash test. It would take a miracle for a large SUV to perform like that in a side impact crash test.
