Constructing buildings from props

Most Simcity buildings have been constructed using BAT, which is the premier way of doing things. However, there are other clever ways to construct more personalized structures, especially for those who are not BAT savy. I am a fan of very large industrial buildings, and Simcity is notorious (at least until lately) for having unrealistic small factorys. I constructed my mill buildings entirely from props and maxis buildings, with the addition of random props collected off the stex. When approaching this method, two things to keep in mind: Anyone attempting to upload such creations should remember that the list of dependancies may be exhausting and attempting to cite the original creators of each prop used could be difficult which is why I will not be uploading most of my "kit bashed" lots. The other issue has to do with how the props themselves react to elevation. When you make a lot like this, it must be placed on flat terrain...the result if you fail to do this is not pleasing to the eye. There you have it though, I have been making custom bashed prop buildings since 2006. Anyone els done this before?

And yes, I am a horrid speller....blame the pot of coffee I just drank :boggle:

That looks pretty sweet!!

I agree that SC4 is very limited in their choice of large industrial buildings. I've dome the same as you and used the lot editor to create larger industrial complexes. I've made a steel mill, an automotive manufacturing plant and a bus depot by putting warehouses, ID buildings and other props together. Unfortunately I don't have pictures of them, but it's nice to know I'm not the only one who has done this.

Being from Detroit of course, I can easily understand your "need" of very large industrial building, Jeremy1. I also have a list of maybe 500 or so Lots that I have created in the last 8 years with the LE and never uploaded hardly any of them, since the list of dependencies would be quite large.

But I have uploaded to the STEX (Nexis) some that only need both bldg as props vol1 and 2. These are older models of packed together Maxis props, but maybe worth to redo them them as "working" LM's with jobs, now that I know how to do that.

However, when you ask if "anyone else has done it before", I don't quite understand the question....done what before? If you mean plopping these "staggered" lots on a rough terrain, you're right, it might look strange since different props react different on uneven terrain and make the custom lot a bit "offset" in most cases.

I have only uploaded one lot creation, and that is an abandoned single track made from maxis lumber and beam cargo props. The rolling mill, with some adaptations may be a candidate for upload as most if not all the essential props are of maxis origin. Ie: corrugated tin fence and dirty industry warehouse, the walls are carefully arranged. These days Im getting back into BAT and am working on some railroad telegraph poles...I think they will be liked by many. Here is another bashed lot:

    Regional Power Plant

    Blast Furnaces

you can also see some sneak previews of my railroad poles on my Flikr account

What I meant by "has anyone done this before" was about making the lots, although could be quite interesting to see pics of peoples creations getting all "terrained-up"

Besides the massively huge dependency list one of those lots will probably generate, the main problem is that the lots kind of look like the buildings in RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 - it's kind of obvious that they were pieced together from spare parts instead of designed specifically for their function.

That's most obvious in the steel mill from the first post. I have to say, the blast furnaces look pretty good, though.

I just can't really see how this would be more practical then modeling, though.
