I am currently working on a city with 31.000 inhabitants and it's doing well to say the least. It's booming with demand so it puzzles me that no one seems to care about the lack of a police station in the city. The opinion poll shows that safety is low but it just doesn't seem to have any negative side effects. Crime is low all over and that's probably why my safety advisor still hasn't mentioned police but he does care a lot about fire protection. Still, how is it possible to avoid police as a crime deterrent in such a big city? Even more weird, I just unlocked the deluxe police station with a mention of the proud police force in my city. I just don't have police station in my entire region and nothing seems to give me a reason to get one besides a few crime scenes scattered across the city.

You can build a city without a police force. It is very difficult but possible. There is a catch though because growing large will eventually require some policing as you will need to have some crooked uneducated sims to fill the lower classes and these sims are more prone to crime. Also you will likely find that Police is not such a big deal in residential most of the time but seems to be very prevalent in industry.

Thus far the only time I can recall in game that I needed a police station was when some NIMBY custom lots grew in a sizable concentration making people mad enough to riot; This was in a town of 3,000 sims.

Turn on your neighborhood watch ordinance and sit tight. You shouldn't need police unless you add something like an airport which is a hotbed of crime. At that point you will also need a mod called Crime Doesn't Pay which fixes the poor effectiveness of police stations.

Why do airports create such a high amount of un-curable crime. Even in simmars the space ports are always crime ridden.

I will build a police station when I need one but it just seems weird that I don't need it already. My question was how it's possible to run a fairly big and wealthy city without police. Who would want to open a business in a city with 30.000 people without police? It really affects my ability to take it seriously. They safety advisor asked me to build a fire station when I had just about 2000 people in my first city. The only police related matter I have had so far is unlocking the deluxe station and how it would be a nice contribution to the proud police force in my city. The ignorance in that made me wonder if the game really expects that you just build a police station out of the blue. From time to time I also get some praise about not having riots but what about the assault downtown and car theft another block down the avenue filled with $$$ commercial offices? My point is that even a low crime level should be reason enough to halt all the high demand I see from $$ and $$$ commercial business and residents.

The other annoying thing is that the instant you build a police station it will be demanded of you to build a jail, which costs a non-scalable §400 a month.

Which doesn't make sense at all. A small police station has room for a few inmates but it's totally fine that they walk the streets before you get one.

I don't know what version you are playing, but I haven't had a jail demand in months of playing.

Come to think of it, I sued to get them before when I ignored the crime display and didn't place enough stations.

The deluxe police station is a pest. All that happens is the the 'coper buzzes around creating more distractions.

This is because sim cops are lazy. You see your sim cops will only walk three tiles from the edge of the road. So any lot bigger than 6x6 will suffer "un-curable crime."

The other annoying thing is that the instant you build a police station it will be demanded of you to build a jail, which costs a non-scalable §400 a month.

Actually, the jail is scalable. You can set its funding in the budget menu as opposed to setting it from the lot.
