Gran Turismo Series

Sooooo... A quick search tells me that there are no threads currently hosting conversations about Polyphony Digital's absolutely amazing Gran Turismo series, so here we go. I started my gaming life with SimCity for SNES, but quickly expanded into... RACING games. I love the GT series. The detail on the cars has always been great, the physics engine has always been fantastic, and the races are always fun.

Anyways, do we have favorite cars? Tracks? Things we keep coming back to the games to do over and over again?

I rather like the Ford GT. It's fast, balanced, and handles ridiculously well. The sound that truck-sourced V8 produces is nothing short of heavenly. I'm also a big Subaru fan, so I favor using Impreza WRX STis in my racing as well. If I'm in B-spec mode, I like the PD F1 car, because it's so fast even the Bobs can't screw it up. I like most of the tracks, but Monte Carlo is absolutely epic. The Top Gear Test Track is fun, but mainly because of Jeremy Clarkson and his merry band of miscreants.

So, join in the fun and let me know if there is anyone else out there who likes this fantastical racing series!

*bonus fun fact: this is the first topic I am starting after thousands of posts over many years!

We did have a GT5 thread but that was more about production updates and stuff so I'll just convert to this thread. But anyways......

I'm a drifter so I absolutely love Eiger Nordwand. And in GT5 a TVR Speed 6 with titanium race exhaust in definetally the best sounding car. I play with a wheel with clutch, 6-speed, and GT5 is amazing with it! Do you play online?

I bought a PS3 just for the game , and at first it was very enjoyable with the graphics , over 1000 cars ( even though 70% of them are from GT4 ) and then later on I started to dislike it and move back on to Forza 3 ( because I started to love playing ranked Drifting mode )

But overall the game feels incomplete to me now , once I compare to it GT4 ( Which I still play leisurely )

- The sense of speed feels odd to me.

- The tranny shifts are way to quick when I use manual shifting.

-There are way too few regular events , but I do enjoy getting paid lots of credits in the seasonal events44.gif

-The engine sounds on most of the cars , annoy me.

-I wish Sony wouldn't have forced Polyphony Digital to rush the game's release date , it would've been a ton better in special events and alot more premium cars.

-I still love my Gran Turismos though! Ever since I was a kid , My favorite is GT4 and GT2.

-My favorite cars in GT5 ( And I love hearing the engines start up! )

-DMC Delorean 12

-Pontiac GTO

-Pontiac Vibe

-Isuzu 4200R concept

-Chevrolet IROC Z concept

-Pontiac Solstice concept

-Pontiac Sunfire GXP concept

-Renault Avantime

-Honda Civic Gathers Race car

-Lancia Delta EVO

-Lexus LFA

-Ford Taurus SHO

-Mitsubishi Starion Rally

-Citroen C4

-Chevrolet SSR

-Plymouth CUDA

-Dodge Challenger

-Nissan Bluebird

-Subaru Outback WRX

-Citroen 2CV

-Toyota AE86

-And no Oldsmobiles or Trans -Ams 15.gif

Now , I ABSOLUTELY love the weather and night lighting in GT5 43.gif

-And the tire smoke!

-And the very organized multiplayer lobbies are a HUGE plus.

-The go-karts are HUGE fun!

-The Nurburgring is insane at night.

I know that list was long , but im giving my honest opinion on the game franchise 4.gif

I've popped online occasionally, the problem is that I've since switched time zones, so if I'm ever online at night here, anyone I know is just starting work... That, and I'm a misanthrope hahaha :D

I did a bit of drifting in the seasonal events (using old-school American muscle) but didn't score especially well. A better-tuned car may help in that case. I do like the rest of the seasonal events, and I appreciate PD putting those up there to extend the game a little bit.

I definitely agree that GT5 has an incomplete feel to it. I've read in interviews that Yamauchi (the developer) wanted an extra year to continue building his game. Apparently there are some DLC packages coming to us eventually, and our usual, small monthly update. There are hints at more tracks being added (Apricot Hill, Pikes Peak Hill Climb, some others that were left out from the old games) and more premium level cars. I love the interiors of the Premium Cars, although some of them seriously reduce visibility (GT by Citroen, I'm looking at you, look AT you because I can't see OUT from you).

I really want that Pikes Peak Hill climb. The major disappointment I have with GT5 is their damage modelling, compared to the rest of the game it brings you to tears it's so bad!

    I played the hell out of GT3 and GT4 but I don't own a PS3 so I've never tried 5.

I think everyone liked the Nurburgring, I also enjoyed the rally tracks in the game.

But my "favorite" was the test oval in GT3 with a Pikes Peak Escudo rally car-there was a bug in the game where if you got going really fast the physics would glitch and you could fly. I mean literally, like drive in the air :)

Only complaint I have is that they left out so many old tracks I liked and that the rally racing is narrowed down so much compared to that of GT2 and GT4. The B-spec mode is not into my liking although you earn easy cash that way but I would rather have larger A-spec career instead. I really don't have an opinion about the graphics and the game pretty much plays the same way as GT4 did which is the reason I like GT5 as much as I do. I really hope the rumors about DLC especially more tracks from previous games would make a return.

They did leave out Seattle city course which is fun because you can overtake rivals by jumping over them.

Seattle was great and there was a really hilly, narrow one in GT4 I miss too(somewhere in Italy). Loved those courses.

Aah I remember the narrow tracks and the amazing feeling when you speed down those tracks in a super car. :D

Ah, those rally special stages, the one was Capri, on that tropical-looking island and the other one... *google* AH! THAT'S RIGHT! Citta di Aria (which apparently follows real roads in Assisi, Italy. Those were among my favorites from GT4. I'm praying those get re-added. Seattle was a lot of fun, especially in those old muscle cars. Made me feel like Steve McQueen from "Bullitt".

Oh yeah. The Seattle track was pretty realistic too, if I recall.

What was the tropical rally track again? Tahiti?

My PS2 broke sadly, so I can't play those games anymore(and I had to pass up $3 used copy of Shadow of the Collosus at the bookstore the other day :()

Ah I put far too many hours into GT2; GT3 left a bad taste in my mouth but GT4 was really sweet.

There were a couple of cars that I seemed to go out of my way to master in the GT series. Just loved them tuned them up to perfection and then raced to win in anything even in some races that I was underpowered.

    Lotus Esprit

    Spoon S2000

    Lancia Delta S4

Favourite Track has to be Trial Mountain since it was tough to learn initially and even tougher to master.

Btw about the damage modeling has anyone reach level 40 in A-spec because I heard full damage for premium cars will be unlocked when you do that. At least there is a load of videos on youtube where you can see the doors and bumpers coming off cars. I am at lvl 30 myself. But what comes to the standard cars the damage is just horrific pixel mess.

The damage modeling looks like a kind of mushy mess. I tried *really hard* to make the doors and bumpers fall off my Ferrari, but despite my best efforts I just couldn't do it. I'm not yet at level 40 (I think I'm 30 or 32 or so) so perhaps you're correct.

And I was talking about the Capri Rally, where you drive through this little village and then up around the back end of the mountain, and if you hit the e-brake *just* right you can drift through the hairpins coming back down into the town. I loved that track. In GT5 (well, in every game), I think I actually prefer Deep Forest to Trial Mountain.

    That was the BEST track.

    I do, from GT1 on.

Totally love the series, one of the reasons why I'm not with xbox.

what I miss since GT1 tho is the feeling of the speed and the "customization" of the cars, as in you can hit them with a racecar-like paintjob if you want.

And I don't like that you can only get a reward car once for every race...

True, in GT4 the way I earned cash, and eventually got the stealth cars, was by repeating the race that gave you the Toyota rally SUV (don't remember the name).

In GT5 there is a selection of cars that can be painted up with racing livery, but it's a limited list of premium cars. One of the things that they complain about at GTPlanet.net is the lack of a livery editor. I think an editor would be a cool idea, but for someone like me whose computer skills are basic and who plays the game for fun at a not-too-high level it's a bit involved. It's great if it's implemented for others to try though!

I think one of the cars I miss from ye olde days (GT2) was the Dodge Avenger. It's kinda silly, but I thought the first generation Avenger was a great looking coupe, and I'd drive one today if I could find one that was well maintained. I may be the only one, but I wish there were more "regular" cars in the game. I'm not talking about 50 versions of the Toyota Vitz (bleh) but a wider variety of every day cars. I LOVED that feeling of "driving my dad's car" (a Honda Accord) around a race track at 10/10ths from the first game!

I'm glad for the Top Gear track in GT5, though I miss the coffee breaks in the License Tests, for some reason I loved those little events.

I am SUPER happy the coffee breaks didn't count against you in the medal count, otherwise I would NEVER have been able to score all silvers in those games (I'm just not good enough to get all golds).

GT5 is getting its first DLC packs

    -Two new tracks

    -15 new modified cars

    -100 paint items

-and one including helmets and racing suits

You can get all of these with about spending 11€ or if you only want the cars or tracks it will be less.

The game also got a major update that improves multiple things in the game.

    Some worth to mention

-The standard cars get an simplified cockpit view

-11 new nascar cars from the 2011 season added

-a new nissan skyline race modified car added

-the player can control the weather conditions of races

    -a new opening movie

I was not hugely impressed by the new update but I will for sure get the track pack and car pack.

I still hope we will see more DLC in the future especially tracks and more events to the career and maybe

a higher level rank allthough I havent even reached level 40 yet.

SPOILER NEW INTRO MOVIE and if you want to see the proper intro just jump to 1:55 in the video

Oh and there is a surprise gift from Polyphony next time you log into the game :golly:

Just my opinion. I feel Forza 4 is much better than GT5.

GT5 mostly has cars from GT4 unimproved and not even with an interior. That's something to set me real back. They're graphics are good in some spots but 20 tracks, and some have trees that look like paper? That's bad.

Forza 4 has good graphics on all tracks, it s fun to drive, on GT5 it is 30fps and feels like your driving a Civic when you're driving a Lambo. I think Gt5 was beaten by Forza this year.

I think GT fans and Forza fans will not give up their own games, the same way PC people and Mac people don't like each other, the same way PS3 and XBox 360 owners feel about each other. Yeah, I was disappointed with the lack of quality cockpits in all the cars, but I don't own an XBox, I won't go buy an XBox, and will never give Forza any attention other than to think "It's probably fun, but it's not worth going out and wasting money I don't have on." I think I already mentioned about the addition of "normal" cars in the GT series in a comment further up.

I do think, however, that Polyphony Digital probably stretched themselves too thin with all their racing-related side projects that they didn't put as much effort into the game as was necessary. Just how it seems with all the delays and half-finished feeling about it despite the years in development. Wasn't it supposed to be a launch title? I really wish I knew what was going on in the PD offices the whole time.

I will buy the courses because I want Spa. I won't buy the cars because I can't bring myself to care at all about touring cars. I was hoping for more detail for the standard car interiors. Oh well, you can't always get what you want.

Don't be the guy to start the Forza / Gran Turismo debate! There is no way to win this arguement, each will not give up on their own preference. Though I do agree that PD kinda slacked off on GT5 a bit but then I've never played Forza either.
