Commute time

Hello, Sorry for making another topic.

Here is the deal:

Everything is working now, except one really really frustrating thing, sims are realy stupid to have long commute time when a job is right next to them, I got on a medium sized zone a city with like almost 4k people, on one corner. The residential zones are divided into 4x4 blocks, i used bus stops in a 2block sequence in my residential zone along with a subway station in the center next to another bus stop. then i got an avenue with 2 oneway roads on each side ( one on the oposite direction of the other) that avenue with those oneway roads are connected to a roundabount .

Here is a image: http://imageshack.us...2/61659155.png/

As you can see i also got a highway connected to the avenue and to some roads below,

The sims keep getting commute long time . in the graph data views it says avg of 1.2 hours, i know thats alot, i also see that the subway has a usage of 89 % and the 2 bus stops in the centre of the residential and industrial zones is at 142% i made 1 more bus stop next to those 2 ( 1 more in residential zone and another in industrial ) the usage for both was roughly 85% .

I tried building a monorail but no1 uses it, i realy dont know why its like this, i zoned the jobs on the other corner to prevent air polution to go to my sims, but seriously 1.2 hours for that? with all those services? i dont understand, people are abandoning their houses because of the commute time: http://imageshack.us...3/30582068.png/

What should i do ?

What does your traffic pattern look like - any congestion? Perhaps the jobs available aren't what is in demand. Are you using NAM? If not, Sims will use the most direct (distance) path to jobs - even to the point of overcrowding.

I see the jobs in the corner are connected by a roundabout and a avenue, try making it a straight shot instead of at an angle and try placing some industrial jobs right above the residential areas connecting them with roads and see if that works. Please provide a picture of those traffic patterns that CaptCity said!

I constantly have problems with my commute time. I'm using the NAM and have a vast array of mass transit choices available, as well as a halfway decent highway system, so when I see commute times of more than 5 hours (I've actually noticed upwards of 2 days) I just ignore it and let my city run. No one's abandoning anything, and I still get high marks across the board for happy sims, and when I query on buildings one by one the vast majority tell me they have medium or short commutes. I never know what the game is telling me when I ask it certain questions, so I attribute it to bugs and keep on truckin'. Perhaps not the best strategy, but hey, works for me!

It may also be due to the way you develop your city. If you have a large number of sims commuting to neighbour cities, this will definitely increase your average commute time, as a trip to a neighbour city is always regarded as "long commute", even if your sim lives just next to the city border (and works at a factory or office next to the border in the other city - but the simulator has no means to detect and evaluate this). And due to a wrong calculation in the job/trip selection algorithm, sims living close to the city border (and a connection), will almost always pick the job in the neighbour city. So I would suggest that you don't zone R close to connections, instead zone C there. They benefit from the high traffic; I have often got more C development there than at the city center (the supposed CBD). High-capacity commercial development close to connections will also act as a "trap" to your sims, making them pick the jobs there, instead of crossing the city border. And a tip: if the connection is a "double" network (avenue, highway) make sure to provide a way for your sims to return (or get there, in the morning), otherwise your sims won't pick the job, and you may get "no job" zots, even if the jobs in the buildings affected sum up to a number as low as 50, or even 20! For example, if your network is an avenue, drag a 2-tile long stetch of street, crossing the avenue, 1 or 2 tiles off the city border (I usually drag it in a tile between two lightpoles, so that the visual effect is minimal). This way, the buildings between the city border and the first intersection will be reachable both ways ("from" and "to"). See the pic below.

Im sorry it took so long to reply, my internet was behaving a bit odd in the last couple of days . So here it is,

    http://imageshack.us...3/traffic2.png/

I made a new city with the same problem,-- http://imageshack.us...ficstupid1.jpg/ now a city without neighbours, without roundabounts, farmlands, some residential 11k people, some comercial jobs, and rest all farms, bus stops in the town: http://imageshack.us...stopinside.jpg/

    Traffic data view: http://imageshack.us...iewtraffic.jpg/

Transportation facilities in the farmlands :http://imageshack.us...ficstupid2.jpg/ (all railstations have a bus stop near them with road acess)

This is a bit frustrating, im posting this too because i thought it could help

I fixed the problem, it was an issue with nam, my game was rhd, and nam was lhd, so i changed nam to rhd, and everything worked alright, i spotted that on avenue intersections which people cant drive on it because its 'grass'

and the white arrows where in the wrong direction and wrong place , thank you guys for helping me :)

Even though you fixed your problem, get rid of the highway, avenues, and monorails. they waste money and no one uses them. I mean srsly theese things are for 20,000 + ppl, not 4,000

When you show the traffic views, please show the traffic flow view (click the radio button under the default one) and we'd get a better picture of your traffic and usage. Green in these snaps just mean that there is no apparent congestion but says nothing about the usage.

I put highways, avenues and monorails in the beggining and scroll down the funding, it makes it easier then to build the city, when its needed i fund it up, so that i don't need to build monorails destroying every building i see... i have now a 130k people city with 2 neighbours, which one of those has 15k people (only rich) and i have buses and subways. I know what i am doing :)

The traffic flow wasnt even at 40% :)

Thanks for your effor guys :) Happy building!
