I recently decided to go back to playing SC4 Deluxe after much time off. I went to import a city using SC4 Terraformer, however....this is what happens after going into and backing out of a city.

I have an Intel® Core i7 CPU 950 @ 3.07GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.1GHz

12 GB RAM

ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series

865.7 GB Hard Drive Space

So anyway....what is going on here?

Thanks!

    Same problem here:

I believe it has to do with Crossfire (see http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1691417.html). I too have Crossfire enabled (2x 5770's) and didn't see this problem before installing the second card. I don't, however, like the idea of going into software mode to fix the problem. I'm trying to live with it, as the cities are still accessible, but it's a royal pain.

I've seen this before, but I don't remember what was done about it. However, since it seems to he a hardware graphics problem, let's look at your set up.

Open your graphics control panel in the operating system and make sure that you are properly set up to run this legacy game. It doesn't handle any advanced options at all, not even anti-aliasing, and weird things including crashes to the desk top can happen when it goes nuts.

Make sure that for all GPU's you have, you have set all options to be activated at application load time. This setting is often called 'application selected'. All programs have a preface that specifies the capabilities they expect in the hardware, and SimCity 4 really wants a plain VGA graphics environment with no hardware interference.

These days, by the way, you can run in software rendering because the CPUs are generally fast enough so that things can be acceptable. My Athlon II X2 system is quite happy with this. There is currently a glitch in my graphics driver that prevents me from running in hardware mode, but I don't really miss it. You may not be very happy running in Cheetah mode with software rendering because you will heat up your chip set. Try running at a lower rate. It is more relaxing anyway, and you will get more out of watching the animation at close zooms. Maxis did a lot of work, and there is no point in missing the firefighters doing their thing, etc.

{Here is the thread with a similar issue and some solutions that seemed to work}.

Specifically, you can look at the solution A Nonny Moose gave in the {second post} (was this the thread you were thinking about?), which is very similar to what he has suggested here.

You can also look at the more specific solution Commikaze gave {a bit further down}, which would likely require less work. This problem seems to happen a lot with ATI cards, but at least it seems fixable.

Yep. Same meat, different gravy. It is not a matter of ATI only, but their new systems after the merge with AMD are even more arcane, so really have a good look at your Catalyst panel, and make sure you are set up to run anything, including a legacy game.
