Wow, I actually really love this. You have really captured that HORRIBLE UK midlands feeling, which is really great, it's so stark and bleak, I love it

And on another subject: If I find the time, I could do another tutorial on how to get gascookers buildings to grow like in this village. Do you want to have it?
quote>

Yes please with the tutorial on gascooker buildings, I'm having trouble getting just them to be built at the moment, even with just the euro building type on as build all styles at once (not cycle every 5 years). lot sizes etc. I think would be usefull.

As for the british shops etc. tokso has just launched some new comercial ones this week and I hope he considers putting some more smaller versions on the stex, also maybe Gascooker does some more comercial lots in his victorian houses, i.e. doctors, dentists, Archtiects (the practice I work for is in a victorian terrace) and maybe some new build business park units. If I had time and was able to learn 3DSMzx (we use archicad in the office) then I would probably be able to do a few, but unfortunately I can't, as you can tell from my profile i have other commitments.

Love the CJ so far, alot of thoguht has been put into this and thanks for the NAM piece tutorial, this will help me on my slowly developing Simcity4 project.

Thanks to everyone who has left a message. I am really glad to get so much feedback!

    Alek:
I like the combination of the irrigation canals and the bigger canals, too.

    Traffic_Jam:
    Thank you for you post!

    Nardo69:
Thank you for replying. Perhaps you are right about the comercials. But it would be better to have propper british ones, wouldn' it? And have a look at the tutorial. Tell me if it is understandable.

    Deathtoall:
Good to see you again! And thank you for your nice comment.

    jacqulina:
Welcome again! And thank you for posting!

    sebrat13wildcat:
Welcome to the village! I am glad that you think that the village captures the midland feeling. Thank you very much for commenting.

    Nik-nik:
Yes, I already saw a preview of them in simgoober's thread. I can't wait for them to be released.

    organicsabre:
Welcome to the village, too. Perhaps the next tutorial can help you a little bit. And about the british shops: Gascooker already told me that he has planed some comercials to go with his UK buildings.
And thank you for your nice, long comment!

    pikatchoum:
Welcome back! And thank you for your post.

A small tutorial on gascooker's UK terraced buildings

Note: It is usefull to allow only europe style buildings to develope. Otherwise the probability of getting gascooker's houses is even lower.
Also usefull is Tolomar's Tileset Mod . Depending on the amount of coustom BATs installed it will raise the probability of getting gascooker's buildings.
To get the buildings to grow, it is necessary to have enough demand for R$, R$$, C$ and CS$$. It is useful to raise the taxes for R$$$ to prevent them from showing up.

This is the area in one of my testing cities we will develope:

    aukvillagep21p14ut.jpg

The first block will be filled with the R

Okay...nice tutorial, but I don't get how you are supposed to orient the corners, what's the rule for that? Is it important that the block corners look different ways or is the more the corners of an intersection face a different way or what?

    jbridgman:
    This is complicated... The corners...

    First:
To get specific buildings on corner lots, the orientation of these lots is important. For example the Horse and Jockey Pub, it is the one on the intersection of the two avenues. You can see the lot it has grown on in some earlier pictures. All of gascooker's corner buildings have two front sides which have to face the roads. And to get them you always have to zone corner lots like this:

    cornerlotright2au.png

    And not like that:

    cornerlotwrong2yf.png

I hope you see the different orientation of the lots. If you don't use the right ones you will not get gascookers corner buildings.

    Second:
To zone this type of lots you can use the 'alt' key. If you see that the zone you are laying down gets the wrong orientation, press the 'alt' key before releasing the mouse button. You will see how the zone-arrows flip to the other side.
It isn't easy to predict to which side the game will orient the zones by default. This is a problem for 1x1 corner lots, because you are unable to see the arrows before finishing the zone. So you will have to try and to dezone if the lot gets the wrong orientation.
Normaly, the zone-arrows point to the most important traffic network. For example they prefere avenue over road. And if there are two eaqual networks on both sides, you will get the right orientation in most cases. However, there are exeptions, but I don't know the rule for them to appear.

I am sad that I am unable to explain it any better. I hope you will understand what I am trying to say.

    eeeeeeeeeeeeeeh, About those corners...
let me get this straight42.gif. Should the orientation be with the right side on the corner?
    That's what I understand from the pictures.9.gif

Now this is a real interesting tutorial, interesting in many ways.

I never took so much thoughts in the layout of my residential areas, made them more following to my intuition and to the picture in my head but you are righ. Especially with the orientation of those corner commercials / pubs.

    Great Work!

Oh, okay, I get half of it now.

Let's say this L is a corner building with a nice garden in the back. Now. Both legs of the L must face the street....therefore we orient the arrow so that both sides can face the street.....however...how do I know which side the arrow is on? Cuz if you get this wrong, it won't develop. Perhaps its trial and error?

Perhaps I can better put it by saying that corner buildings have two fronts. How do you know which one is primary (e.g. the one with the direction arrows?)

Thanks! This will be very helpful. Hope it'll help others understand also.

    jbridgman:
Yes, you have it! It is exactly like you said.
Now about how to know where the arrows have to be: At least for all gascooker's corner buildings you will need a lot like this:

    cornerlotright2au.png

For some other corner buildings this will work as well. But perhaps there are others which require the orientation to be the other way round, I don't know.

    Nik-nik:
Lets imagine that we stand in the middle of the intersection the corner building is facing. We look diagonally at the building in question, its edge directly pointing to our location. In this case the arrows of the lot have to point to the road to our right side.
At least for gascookers corner buildings.

I hope this isn't too confusing.

A special for my regular visitor Alek:

    The region view:

    regionview2dj.jpg

As you can see, the whole village is build in one medium city tile. There are no neighbours. And here the traffic view:

    jacqulina:
I already posted many pictures of the residential areas in the last pages. But I will have a look and perhaps I can show you something soon.

Nice stuff once again and a useful tutorial. I've tried myself once or twice to get a whole terrace row of gascookers houses, it takes painfully loong but is really worth it once its done.

    Dear visitors

Thank you very much for leaving so many friendly comments again, it really encourages me to continue this thread. This whole story wasn't planned as a real CJ, it was meant as a small showcase of gascooker's exellent UK buildings. But by now it has grown already much larger than actually planned. This is due to the overwhelming amount of replies posted.
    Thank you very much again.

    Nardo69:
Thank you for leaving another nice comment. You are one of my most loyal visitors, thank you. And I am glad that you like the region view and the last images.

    Deathtoall:
Thank you too for your nice post. I am happy that I was able to build a village that looks like a british or irish suburban area. This was obviously my goal.

    Traffic_Jam:
Thank you for this nice words!

    jbridgman:
I can't believe it! You are going to stay at Friedrichshafen!!! I passed half of my life at Meersburg, a small town 20 km in the west of it. When you are at the Lake of Constance (Bodensee in german), you have to visit it. It is one of the most beautifull towns along the lake, and it is a rather big lake, more than 80 km long. Meersburg is more than 1000 years old, Friedrichshafen is younger and was totally destroyed by allied bombers in WW2 because of its aviation industry. For example the Zeppelins were build there. In the harbour station (one of the few undestroyed buildings, Bauhaus style by the way) you can still see that you could fly directly to Chicago or New York. Quite funny for a small city with 70 000 inhabitants. The town was rebuild after the war and is now a rather boring 50s style city. Very sad history... I simply have to show you some pictures of Meersburg here, so that you can imagine it better:

    1000jahremeersburg.jpg

The yellow and red buildings are the school I went to:

I hope that you will have a good time at the Bodensee. It is a really beautiful landscape.

    Gryphonite:
Yes, it is definitely worth the effort.

    pikatchoum:
Hey, welcome back. I would be very honored, to have a place in your sig.
    And thank you for posting.

Some more pictures of the village will be up here soon. So - stay tuned...

Ok, after showing you some pictures of a real german village, here the next update on the artificial UK village:

    The local cemetery

Due to the construction of the railway, the cemetery had to be relocated. I know, this is unlikely to happen in the real world, but this is still a game, isn't it? At least the new one is bigger and better. But judge for yourself.
