SimCity 4 causes BSOD

Five days ago I ran SimCity 4 and a few minutes in I received a BSOD, and today I ran it again and a few minutes in… BSOD.

This has only happened with SimCity 4 and never happened before, I have not made any hardware changes and no drivers have been changed recently.

BSOD:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage

to your computer.

The video scheduler has encountered an unexpected fatal error.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,

restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow

these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.

If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer

for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware

or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart

your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then

select Safe Mode.

It's not likely that SC4 is the cause, more likely your memory may have faults. You can test the memory with "Memtest", you can find it with a internet search.

i was having blue screens with simcity 4 for a time. what fixed it for me was deleting all my graphics card drivers, restarting, and letting windows find the drivers it wants to use, let windows install them, restart when it asks. I have never had the blue screen since.

The configuration dump is somewhat annoying because it doesn't tell you immediately what O/S you are running. Vista SP2 was a long way down.

SC4 doesn't cause BSODs, or never did when I was running windows. Programs don't change, but platforms do. I suggest either memory problems or graphics driver/hardware problems. I think you should try Tyson4's solutioin for an opener. You should update to version 6.1 of your operating system (Windows 7) as soon as possible.

I would recommend holding off an upgrade to Window 7 as Window 8 will be released somewhere around in 2012 and then deciding which operating system to upgrade to.

    I tested the RAM and graphics card this morning and they are fine, unfortunately I can't try reinstalling the drivers as I am no longer at my laptop and won't be for a few days, however I did a clean install of my graphics drivers three weeks ago.     Strange indeed. As for Windows 8, if you wait for new versions when there is a solid upgrade around, you'll wait forever. Windows 8 will be a new box of bugs and then you'll have to wait for at least the first service pack, etc, etc. By the time Windows 8 is solid, you'll have a new machine.

    Meanwhile, try setting XP compatibility mode under Vista for the .exe.

    3GB, It might be running low on memory, next time I try i will keep an eye on the remaining memory, as for the graphics card it is not a powerful gaming card, but I have run the game many times before on that system with no problems.

    What other games do you run?

    if any are bigger memory hogs then sim city 4 then your probably ok on

    the ram amount.

    Sim City 4 is really not that bad when it comes to ram usage for the most part,However it may need a little more on vista though & vista itself is a memory hog.

    I have gta 4 aswell & it's pretty much unlimited with it's ram & video memory use.:lol:

    (it's based on your settings in game of course,mainly the draw distance).

    So you might be ok on ram with sim city 4,but you can still check on it anyway.

    Another thought if the problem persists, try it on software rendering. You may be experiencing GPU incipient failure.

    I set compatibility to XP and renderer to software and it appears to be okay now, but it looks like there is a problem, I ran ArmA2 and GTAIV and they seem to have lost 5-15fps, it looks like my GPU might not be in the best of condition and might not last very long, I'm going to have to keep the use of my laptop to light gaming until I get my new desktop.

    Try running the tests in DXDIAG and any other GPU tests you might have or find. If the GPU is wavering, what usually goes is the clock. If it is getting flaky, sometimes the boot will report it.

    Event Viewer? No boot time errors or warnings at all, I am not sure that there is a problem with the GPU any more, the frame rate for the games appears to have recovered and no GPU related issues since.
