I recently transit enabled a building and changed a name of a region. I use windows 7 and now no sound whatsoever plays when I play Simcity 4. I have fullly checked in game options and music and sound is set to on. What's wrong?

I'm not much of a pro using windows 7. I've never had an issue like what you were describing when running the game under XP, so perhaps it could be an issue with trying to run the game under 7? Either that or perhaps this could be related to a sound card driver issue. The only thing I can suggest is, update your sound cards drivers.

If I reinstall SimCity 4, will I wipe all my data and Plugins out?

If you use the game's uninstaller, it should ask if you want to keep your current cities. Also, you can (and probably should) save a copy of the Regions folder and Plugins folder and place them back into the appropriate places after re-installing.

Before you do anything so drastic as a reinstall, run the game then open your run box and run dxdiag while the game is running, and see what it says about your sound system. I agree you should also check your supplier's site for the sound card to see if you have the latests driver updates.

Oh, and what happens if you undo the changes you made?

I have de-transit enabled the towers, and still no sound. Should I reinstall my copy?

Pretty drastic, so I would look for the cause. What happens if you move those plugins out to another folder, say on your desktop?

Also, silly question perhaps, but did your check your hardware connections? And do you have the latest versions of your drivers?

If you open the Audio Options in the game, are you able to use the "Preview" function to hear any of the game songs? Also, if you go to the C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Radio\Stations\Mayor\Music folder (or whatever it's called in Win7), can you play any of the music files?

That's what I did. No sound.

Yes, the MP3s play perfectly on Windows Media Player, but not on Preview.

Okay, if you are able to hear the sound using the Preview function (I'm not sure if you were responding to that or not.), you might check in the C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Radio\Stations\Mayor folder to see if there is a file name kmay.id. I'm not sure of the inner workings of the game music, but without this file the game music will not start. There is also a similar file in the C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Radio\Stations\Region folder named krgn.id.

Terribly sorry. I forgot to add that Preview did not work at all.

OK, but Capt. City is right about those two files. They have to be there, but they can be empty.

I think we are at the end of our rope if this is not the problem. I am afraid you'll have to reinstall if this doesn't work. I would back up my user files (Regions, Plugins) if you do this, although the game will preserve your regions across a reinstall if you wish.

Have you installed any software recently that had anything to do with audio?

    I''E Sound editor,Music player,Audio Codecs,ect.

(If you did uninstall this software & see if that fixes the problem).

Do you know of any updates you received recently on windows update or manually

    installed?

I think a file or codec the game needed was changed & that's what's going on if

    it worked fine before.

Is it just the music that won't play ingame or is it also the ambient sounds aswell?

    I''E the sound effects.

I don't have Windows 7 but i do have a vista computer so i will see if i can look into

this more once i am using that computer,it does not help to be using XP.^_^

Try updating your Sound Card Driver like inusan Wrote Above.

If windows did update anything that caused it that might help if a driver is

    Available.

Edit:I checked the steam support forums & i could not find anyone else

with this issue on there, seeing as how the game is on steam now.

I solved the problem thanks to a user on GameFAQs!

It turns out that Windows 7 has a specific sound option that can mute one specific program. Since I fiddled with my keyboard a whole lot, something triggered the no sound option.

    Thanks anyways!

Could you post what the setting was in case it comes up again? Just a thought...

    First, I'll quote the user:

    message detail

    quote

check the sound icon in taskbar > open volume mixer and make sure that application is not muted / volume turned to low.

    What I did was:

    1. Start SimCity 4

    2. Press ALT-TAB to go to the desktop

    3. Provided it is not hidden, click on the sound adjust button and click Mixer.

    4. There should be an option to adjust SimCity 4's option.

Have you read through the above thread and noticed anything out of the ordinary? Is this a new problem or have you never had sound? Did you check to be sure it is turned on in the game's Sound Options? Have you ever amended your game's shortcut to turn off the sound?
