Even though I really like large termini with an insane amount of tracks (like Frankfurt Hbf), I agree with TekindusT that the new Berlin Hbf must be one of the greatest stations in the world. It's not a terminus, but is based on a more modern multi-level run-through concept, which is extremely space saving, and a stunning achievement of engineering.

The station of my hometown Bergen is also very nice, though, but I'd like to change a thing or two in the train hall. I haven't taken any pictures from it myself (yet), but I found these on a Norwegian rail forum. The station recently was put on the Norwegian heritage list of architecture.

I can only speak for the train stations I have visited, and Københavns Hovedbanegård is by far the best of them:kbhho01a.jpg2006_08_09_K%C3%B8benhavn_H_ubt.jpeg

London's Victoria Station is nice too.

-I really like Gare du Nord in Paris. I went to Paris by train a year ago. The connection between Rotterdam CS and Paris is very good. 19.gif

If you leave the beautiful Beaux- Arts station you stay in the middle of this romantic city.

Gare de 'l Est, Lyon, Lafayette and Montparnasse are also Huge.

My favorite large station is Union Station in Los Angeles, and my favorite small station is the old Santa Fe Depot in San Diego. Both have that neo-classical look with the Spanish tile roofs and palm trees that just scream SoCal.

This is the interior of the Central Station of Antwerp, Belgium. One of the most beautiful train stations I've ever seen:

Well, i haven't seen much stations so i haven't decided yet, but I loved all of the stations you showed me.

Now I guess my duty to you is to show you the three main stations in Lisbon and the two main stations in Porto, so you can evaluate:

First of all, Porto's most traditional station but not the most busy one, São Bento (only has suburban trains and is not as important as Campanhã even in that area). It is served by the Porto Metro D Line

    estaosobentoporto.jpg

    3143849.jpg

Now, after presenting you the São Bento station, I can show you the most important station in Porto, where the inter-city and international trains stop, and so do the most suburban ones. I'm talking about Campanhã. This is a very important station, and serves most of the metropolitan commuters, because it is also a Porto Metro station for lines A, B, C, E and F. So the underground has 2 metro platforms for five lines, and the above ground has 10 platforms... Small station.

    20060608campanha.jpg

    4304532956962ce2130ab.jpg

Estação do Rossio is the third Lisbon station. Built in the 19th century, it was the most important Lisbon station with Santa Apolónia along the 20th century. With the construction of Oriente and the Rossio tunnel being closed down in the end of the century, it lost it's important and became the third station. It is still very important for Sintra line commuters (around 500.000) who use it everyday. It is connected to the Lisbon Metro by the Restauradores station in the blue line, but it is also close to the Rossio square and the Rossio Metro station.

Now the bigger transit hub in Lisbon, but still disputing the title for most important train station, Oriente.

Built in 1998 for Expo 98, it was designed by spanish architect Santiago Catralva. It is a transit hub for bus, metro and train, but it has lots of bus and coach companies stopping in the bus terminal. The train station itself serves the Meleças line (Sintra) and the Azambuja line, but it has also inter-city and international train service. It is connected to Lisbon Metro by the red line station of Oriente (terminal but soon to be just a big station because of the airport extension)

    estacaodooriente.jpg

    estaodfoorientefotoamri.jpg

Now the oldest station in Lisbon, where the first train ever in Portugal departed in direction to Carregado (50 km). It is still used as a intercity and internation train station, but it is most used as the terminal to the Azambuja line (60 km north of Lisbon), and to the Intercity from Santarém (70 km northeast). It is connected to the Lisbon Metro Santa Apolonia station, in the blue line (Terminal Station).

    55439258.jpg

Now to end I just can't resist showing you the stations I most frequently used while I lived in Oeiras (nice suburb of Lisbon)

First Cais do Sodré station. A transit hub for bus, tram, subway, ferry and train. The train line is not connected to any other, so it is one of the two only terminal stations in the Cascais line (the other being Cascais itself). It is connected to the Lisboa Metro station of Cais do Sodré in the green line (Terminal Station).

    800pxbahnhoflissaboncai.jpg

And of course the Oeiras station, that I used to reach after a 25 minute train ride. It is used by 12.000 commuters everyday. I lived near the station but of course most people just park there.

    300283685d96bb99e02.jpg

Well I guess this is good bye for now. Also I guess I'm going to get known for my very large replies and because I love to show off Lisbon. So goodbye and very nice stations everyone.

I'm quite fond of London Waterloo Station and Paris's Gare du Nord, due to lovely architecture and deep history.
