Sorry if this has been asked elsewhere.

How do I make maps?

What software do I need?  What's the process?

Thanks.  4.gif

Cities XL 2011 uses a new format. I do not know how to make maps for the new format and I think no one knows yet.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

    Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Well, I can unpack them to a .land file, and the .land file has what appear to be DDS headers in it, though I don't know in detail. The maps images are the same images. If we can pin down what we do know to read a .land format file, perhaps then we can get to what we don't know about the format.

So all the instructions previously mentioned on these forums no longer work for 2011?

I see https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=403&threadid=113006&enterthread=y but I'm kinda short on actual instructions. I do note the (land).pak file unpaks into a single (land name).land file, though renaming the .land file to .pak and attempting to unpack *THAT* is a fail. I do note several DDS format file headers, looking at the binaries. If anyone could find a link to how the old maps were packaged, that link would be very much appreciated. Even if the .land file format is different, knowing what contents to expect might go a long way.

Even if repackaging the file is a huge problem, it would be skippy just to have a means to slurp out the contents of the .land file, such as the location of resources, the topo map (for better topos with resource overlay) and so on. I would love love *LOVE* to be able to have better topo maps with resource overlays... I don't even care so much at this point about being able to create my own maps.

Oh, http://www.citiesxs.net/forum/index.php/topic,1431.0.html has a map-maker, but even for the rough translation via Google, I couldn't discover if any of it applied to CitiesXL2011. I would dearly love to slup out those resource maps.

Hey everyone, I figuered out how to make maps.  I will be making a few basic ones with a river/lake and some mountains, with large amounts of resources.

Once I work out how to do some nice maps I will upload some.  Im going to start work on making Mellee Island from the Monkey Island games.

That's good, but have you worked out the detail to have it work in CXL11?

There is a link to one here on the forums.  It's a video tutorial but some of it is in German.  You just need to use google translate to understand it some of it..

The programs you need are:  World Machine 2, Adobe Photoshop CS(not Elements) and the Cities XL map editor by Neidhard and Nashville.

If anyone needs help, pm me.  I made a cool one today, so when I have about five maps, I'll upload them.

Here is a pic of one I did earlier.

I had a look at Mumbai and Stockholm on google earth, I think I might try and make Mumbai, its got a real nice coastline. As for Montreal, im having alot of trouble getting it to work. Not sure why, but the water levels never turn out the same as they do in WM2. I'm on a mission to do it though.

Already made in Cities XL Planet Offer. It has been transferred to CXL 2011 (either officially or through mods).

I would be happy if someone could be able to create a well-done map of Paris with only 45 and 90° angles please ? (with Saint Louis Island for example...). Is it possible ?
