I just wish it could become fully open source like Transport Tycoon did, and finally someone could make some improvements to menus, because with around 1000 of addons, especially in park and recreation section I got lost many times. I know that there is Additional Submenus, but it's not the same as classic menu.

The game for sure is not dead, with any new bat coming it gets something new, and I think that it wouldn't be any game which can dethrone SC4. 3d dimension for game like this, simply does not suits for me. I am also playing in SC4 since polish premiere, same was with SC2000 i SC3000. It won't be dead until last person throw the cd with game away.

Other than SC4 and the original StarCraft, what other PC game older than five years is still regularly stocked in the big box stores (Best Buy, Futureshop, Walmart)? That must say something about the viability of SC4 (and StarCraft for that matter).

Let's face it: the gold standard was set with SC4 and no other city-building game has been able to match it in eight years, which is why SC4 remains alive.

Isn't "making of virtual disks by direct copy of the play disk to the ISO format, then mounting the virtual disk so that it appears to be a physical CD drive to the program." well... um. Illegal?

If you bought it, no, you can do as you please with it provided you don't actually share its content with anyone.

However, there is a rather strict policy about discussing this type of thing in these forums. Doesn't matter if we're talking about something that IS legal, if it's even questionable then it enters that "gray area". I'm betting a moderator will emphasize this before long, so umm... let's keep this thread out of the gray, huh? 2.gif

Another option - and there is no legal gray area with this - is to actually buy another retail copy somewhere. Granted they're not "everywhere" like a recent game might be, but it's still fairly easy to find SC4 on a shelf or at least order it online e.g. from Amazon. And wherever you find it... well if it's anything over $25 it's robbery. Even Amazon, as of today anyway, is selling it for $15. Buy an extra copy and stick it in a safe... right alongside your other most valuable possessions.

It is definitely worth doing whatever you feel is the best way to protect it though. This game isn't going anywhere for a good long time. Try - just TRY to imagine what you'd want in a city simulator, WITHOUT comparing it to SC4 (and please don't write it out in here, there are enough threads on that topic already). It's virtually impossible. And most of what we don't like in SC4 isn't about missing gameplay elements, but simply some bugs and simulation limitations. There's very little "it really needs [this major thing] added to it" other than stuff that's already been added courtesy of various teams (NAM et al). Even the new Cities XL 2011... looks like there may finally be another city simulator worth playing, but so far I don't get the impression it's really even competing with SC4. A semi-decent alternative perhaps, but I see no compelling reason to drop SC4 for it. Admittedly, I haven't tried it yet, so that's only an observation based on what folks have said about CXL on this site. I do plan to try it out eventually, but only out of curiosity, not anxious hopes that it's better than SC4. And there doesn't appear to be anything even remotely interesting on the horizon for this genre, unless someone's keeping a really good secret.

    Wow.

I never thought I would hit a nerve with so many people. It's just because I still play it, but I don't see as many updates or releases by people that I was wondering. And no, to those people who asked, I am not a newbie on the site; I just don't post on here very often.

My only wish is that someone would update the game so it plays better with less crashing. I just started playing it again myself. This is a gold standard and it will take a lot to improve upon it. Perhaps if they release the source code or provide ways to modify things that are currently off-limits. I wonder if there is anyone left at EA who would even know how to do that for SC4?

I got SC4 just a year ago, with no beforehand experience whatsoever, after seeing how many people were still playing it, and how dynamic the modding community was.

The fact that so you got so many replies in one day shows how alive the community still is. Many more recent games, even successful ones, can't claim half that daily activity on their respective forums. The game may be 8 years old, but it is anything but dead

There is no updates because... well... EA doesnt care and Maxis is now part of them. But SC4 is stil alive, the large community and its vast modding capabilities have proved that. And i hope it continues to be so as it is an amazing game. I have no games like that now, ones that have lasted so long. Look at modern warfare 2, loads of people are bored of it. It sits in the bargain bucket of my local store with SC4 standing above it on the shelves, not even on offer. Need i say any more?

Oh, I totally agree. I love playing the game. With all the sites around for SC4, and the fact that I am still playing it nearly 8 years on is a testament to the game itself. At the same time that it came out, I used to play Command & Conquer Generals. Since then, I have stopped playing Generals [though I still own my copies], and there have been what, 3 releases since?

Anyway, I just wondered what people thought of my question. I hope SC4 lives on for a lot longer yet, as I am not bored of it, and also I am not finished creating my regions. I mean, the region I am currently working on will hopefully be good enough for me to make a CJ about, but it's taking it's time as I have not been able to play the game as much as I would like to!

SC4 will live on! I've owned it for going on 8yrs best game I've ever had. The only problem with Sim City is transit, more needs to be done.

Just like everyone else said, SimCity 4 isn't dead. Since I registered here in January, more than 50,000 new users have registered (!). Most of the new members play SimCity, so I don't think the game is dead.
