A very strange windows 7 bug....

Alright, so I'm posting this problem for a friend of mine that has stumped us both...

She bought and installed SimCity 4 Deluxe to run on her windows 7.  Ran the patch and everything loaded it up fine.  We then did the standard tweaks with the shortcut to run the game in windowed widescreen mode as well as tweaked the nvidia control pannel to run the game smoothly without any lag.  Everything was fine.

Day 2: she reboots her computer and the game crashes immediately after the first bridge sim city 4 splash screen.  After some troubleshooting we decide to go ahead and just reinstall, repatch etc.. and the game runs fine again.

Day 3: she reboots her computer and we're back with the same problem!

Any idea what's going on here and how to fix it?  It seems everytime she reboots her computer, this game fails to load and i can't figure out whats changing on reboot that would cause this to happen.

(yes, the disk is in)

It may not be crashing at all. Before you do any of this, when the game crashes after it gets passed the splash screen, go to task manager, and under processes, if SimCity4.exe is running, kill it.

If that fails, let's explore alternatives.

I would recommend taking the disk out if you have to do a reboot, because that may be why. I never seemed to have issues leaving the disk in all the time, so that means that something may be up with your disk or CD Drive. If that doesn't help, your CD Drive may have an issue.

If you find it is the latter case, then try putting another CD or something in, reboot, and then see if that CD will work.

In this section, you really need to tell us about the machine that is crashing.

Windows 7 runs on a plethora of machines, so please describe this one.

Number and type of processors, speed

GPU model, settings  and memory

Radom Access Memory (RAM) size

Swap file (Virtual Memroy) Size

And check in the Program Files directory and find the properties of the Simcity.exe file.  If the version is neither 638 nor 640 you have a problem with the patches.  Please report that.

I suspect you are having a problem because you have 'tweaked' the nvidia settings.

Are you using compatibility options?  It might help if you make the exe file Win XP SP2 compatible.  Also, if you are using a multi-core CPU (very likely) you might need to set affinity to a single CPU.  It is done by modifying the shortcut.  Add the following expression after the last "

-cpucount:1

In other words the new shortcut should look something like this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps\SimCity 4.exe" -CPUCount:1

Depending on where you have installed the game the path might differ.

Hope this helps a bit.

Sounds like some mod you have applied is causing the problem? Perhaps a tree controller or a terrain mod? The reason I wonder is that if it worked fine initially, then after shutting down (thereby saving) and restarting it "finds" the problem mod and refuses to work now. This would not be caused by the "install" but by changes you make as you play the cities.. just my guess..
