Uh oh. NoFunk's been working . . .

cadil_teaser.jpg

Detroit's Cadillac Tower is under way!

I need some help though. Allan do you have any close-up photos of the building's facade? I desperately need some detail shots so I know where to go with texturing. No rush right now -- I'm still working on the building itself -- but if you could scrounge up a couple I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!!

Now that my little teaser is done, I hope everyone had a great Holiday!!

Cheers! 9.gif

Ert: Have fun at the game today! I'll be busy driving home, myself.

Dusktrooper: Sarcasm is the lowest form of humor. Probably why I'm not that funny!17.gif

Bud: Sounds like an excellent plan! Never been there, but my sister keeps telling me I need to go sometime.

Spidey: Sounds like a project of pain. Actually, I have to organize all of mine when I get home. I spent a lot of Friday downloading here (to avoid my own dial up connection)and will finally be to the point where some organization is definately called for.

NoFunk: Nice choice. Can't wait to see some previews!

JB

Hey, were playing the Bears. They haven't scored an offensive touchdown for like three weeks. 18.gif

nofunk: That looks awesome! That is a screenie of your work so far photoshopped into the pic, right?

Spidey: I'm surprised my dad could afford the tix but they're in one of the corners in one of the top rows. Which is fine by me because the only other Lions game I've been to was at the Dome when we really sucked! I think we were in the very top row at that game. 18.gif

bud: Have fun shopping while I'm seeing the Lions whomp the Bears (hopefully). 2.gif

wolverine: What was that post? 41.gif

ert90: Yep! It's a screenshot of one of the sides. Instead of just showing you guys an incomplete wall, I figured I'd toss it up against the real thing.

Hope you have a good time watching us stomp Da Bears! 3.gif

Nice work there Nofunk. It'll be good to get Detroit represented in the skyscrapper aspect of the STEX.
Happy Holidays all.

Well that looks pretty good from what I can see, nofunk.
My dad called FedEx and they said they can't let us pick up the computer because they have to try to ship it at least one time.32.gif
Bud I think you will really like Vegas, I went there when I was about 12 and it was one of the best vacations of my life. Tons of stuff to do there.

I really would like to see more of the Dime, Cadillac and Kales!

I have decided to restart on the Dime building. After I finish watching season II of Seinfeld tonight. I'll show you progress when I get farther along. Ford Field is still in the works too, don't worry. I'm going to have to split up the model because it is getting so big, so I'm going to be focusing more on the dome portion now that I have a good portion of the warehouse completed. The website is on hold until I get my laptop fixed and all his restored back to normal.

XSpiderman mentioned Kales, did anyone plan on taking that? Because if not, I can use the windows and facade details on my Dime Building model to construct Kales since both share a similar sort of architecture.

Well that was some good news!
I think I am going to do my data transfer in a few minutes. I got my new computer today but of course it isn't working because I can't figure out what to do to get the computer to recognize my CD-Drive. I can't install the OS or anything for that matter and my dad is not helping at all right now. Anyway guys have a nice day.4.gif

Hey ert, I'm glad you had a great time at the game, plus the Lions won. Do you have any pictures?

Just to let you guys know, I'm experimenting with the Dime Building in 3DS Max to see if it will be quicker to build. It appears it will be since renderings go fast.

Here's a portion of a rebuilt wall. I still need to the detail towards the top

I also got a nice after Christmas suprise when I logged onto Wolverine access and:

Well that Dime building looks great Wolverine and congratulations on that 4-point! It's funny my brother hasn't been able to check his grades yet because we can't access the State webpage from our house since our computer eats.
Anyway we're trying to get my computer working right now, it looks so awesome!

Allan, I looked at your Detroit pic thread, you got some nice pictures there. I also saw from that that you live in Southfield. I drive through there 5 days a week and it always makes me sad. Detroit wouldn't be tearing down all its skyscrappers if Southfield hadn't built theirs. You seem to know a lot about whats going on in Detroit, do you know how much the Kales apartments are going for? It would help us determine what residential they are.
quote>

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I've been out of town.

I have talked to some people at the Kales open house, and the apartments start at $700/month. I can't remember what the high end of the price range is, but I believe it is something like $1500.

Southfield is very pathetic. Southfield is the largest office market in SE Michigan. The migration of offices to the suburbs seems to have started in the 1960s. When my grandparents moved to Southfield from Chicago in 1965, my grandfather's commute from their house at 12 Mile and Evergreen to the IBM offices at Pallister and the Lodge (in New Center) took 45 minutes to one hour. By the time they moved to Grand Rapids in 1972, IBM was building a huge building at 9 Mile and the Lodge, and a lot of other companies had the same idea. Now we've got all kinds of goofy suburb to suburb commuting patterns and ugly suburban skyscrapers. The commute from Southfield to downtown doesn't take nearly as long as it used to. I've made it in 15 minutes in the heart of rush hour! Ahh, the joys of urban sprawl....

I am seriously considering moving to the downtown area this summer, much to my parents' dismay. I HATE living in the suburbs.

I will look and see what I have. If I don't have anything, I will be going downtown sometime this week or next (at least if I can ever get permission to explore Broderick Tower - haven't had much luck so far). Otherwise, I won't be back in Detroit until January 9th or 10th.

Hey allan, I drove past Southfield on my way to the game yesterday.

I saw the American Center building around a corner and thought to myself Hmm, must be Southfield.

It really is sad.

Well I have to say I agree with you Allan, and I would love to move to the city, Canton is boring as, well, you know.3.gif
I have to say, also, that the suburban skyscrapers look misplaced, but I still like their designs, just not their locations.
Update: I am cleaning up my plugins folder. I have barely made a dent and it is miserable, aggravating work. I want to shoot myself for being so disorganized with STEX downloads. It was when Dev released that oragnizer deal that I started some small clean up and organization. But of course I downloaded so much before that. UGH it sucks.32.gif

Yep, the American Center Building always lets me known when I'm close to home/school when I'm coming back from Ann Arbor. It's only about 3 miles from my place. I go to Lawrence Tech, aross the Lodge from the Southfield Town Center, so I get to stare at those buildings all day. LOL.

A girl I know lives in the Lafayette Towers downtown on the 16th floor and pays only $600 per month for her studio. That's only $100 more per month than I'm paying now, and right now I have to share with three rude, messy roommates! I've got a lead on a summer job downtown, and if I get it, I will be moving downtown - either to Lafayette Towers or a building in Midtown. Even if I don't get it, I will still find a way to talk my parents into it. Haha. I don't mind the drive, although it will really suck when they repave the Lodge next year. I am home now for Christmas, and being away from the city is driving me crazy! Plus, I want to try out that new 1 GB CF card I got for my camera.

wolverine: The Dime Building looks great so far!! And CONGRATULATIONS on your awesome GPA! I didn't do quite as well, but I did get an A in the class I missed the exam for! Ha!

Work is progressing on the Cadillac Tower. Here are a few shots of the roof details:

cad_roof_detail2.jpg

Here's what the actual roof looks like:

And here's a shot of the window details so far:

I'll be in Milwaukee until the 2nd. Work will resume then!

That is awesome looking nofunk! Nice job on the building detail. You are fortunate that the building is relatively the same on all four sides, meaning you just have to rotate the walls around. My buildng has walls that are all different, and not to mention a footprint that is slightly trapezoidal because of Campus Martius. But anyway, all the progress is looking good. It will be nice to see some Downtown Detroit skyscrapers rise in simcity. Besides the Buffalo Wing project, I think our project will provide the best examples of classic american architecture.

Holy cow that looks awesome! I have some good news for myself I thought I'd like to share with you even though I'm sure you don't care3.gif I did a lot of cleaning in plugins folder and I am about 60% done. Yay.4.gif My dad is figuring out whats up with my computer now so hopefully I'll have it up and running today.

Spidey: I'm doing the exact same thing with my plugins folder and I'm doing a clean install of the game. Then re-downloading only the 'best of the best' from the STEX. I've had numerous little problems since downloading BATs from the STEX. My game should be running a lot faster and smoother after this is done with.

A WORD OF CAUTION: Deleting civic buildings before deleting them in your cities wil cause some really annoying problems with civic funding. 2.gif

Wolverine & Nofunk: Both buildings look great! I stand (well, sit actually) in awe.

Spidey: You must have a lot more stuff than I do. My re-orginisation project only took me about three hours.

On a positive note, I got a new graphics card and also doubled my RAM yesterday... so now the game really runs well.

Even with my plug-ins folder exploding with files, my game still runs very well. In fact, I have never had a problem with SimCity 4 crashing in the 2 years I've owned it. But remember, I have a laptop that overheats, so while the game would run fine, my computer would be as loud as a leaf blower. My computer has been sent in. It shouldn't take long to get it back. I also need to find the time to do a system restore, but I'll wait a while for that.

Don't even get me started on my plugins folder! It is a complete disaster. I will never get around to organizing it either, so it will just grow exponentially worse over time. My collection of downloaded city/architecture photos ranks first on the priority list...I've finally got them mostly organized. I've only got about 1500 more to organize (keeping in mind that I started off with about 35,000).

Well we have some good and bad news. That sucks you were sick Farminsim.
I got my computer to work, and the problem? Leave it to the high school sophomore to figure it out! My dad the engineer tried to make everything more technical than it was to try and show off his knowledge5.gif makes me laugh. Anyway the problem was that the SATA power cable was not plugged into the hard drive. DUH!
I am really upset, though, because I installed SC4 and it won't work. It starts up with the little EA Games symbol, which as you know does a little flip thingy, and that is where it stops and exits the game. UGH. I don't know what the problem is, maybe you guys do? I have my video card and all that software installed...

I hate to be overly critical, but I found some issues with the Cadillac:
newcadillac7sy.png
I hope I didn't sound mean there, I am only trying to help you make it better, I'm impressed with the details you have and it is one of your first projects, I think you are doing really good, like I said, I am just trying to help.10.gif

We can pretend an extra level was added to the building. OR....
He was trying to copy the top level of my building!!! I have 3 levels of windows with green paneling in between those large gaps in my model too. Perhaps I caused confusion?

As of 11:00 p.m, here's an update on the Dime...
dime3.jpg

EDIT: Yuck! It looks pixelated and crappy. Well, I sized it down a lot LOL.
