I was thinking of getting another dog to go along with Ginger. But our dad won't let us. We were lucky to get Ginger. My mom had to tell him "We are getting the boys a dog. They want a dog, we are getting a dog", lucky us. He doesn't regret it so far. Nobody does. 20.gif

Take it gently with your campaign for a second dog.  For us, it was a matter of my wife and I jointly deciding that Casey would be happier if he had a companion who spoke his language, so we got another setter puppy.  It rejuvenated him, and we were very happy.  After that, we were pretty much a two  dog family, and after my wife passed away and I lost Duffy, I had only Andy, and after a while, I couldn't stand living with only one dog, so I managed to find Twyla.

Now, of course, I am dogless.  That may change as my life settles down more in a year or so.  Things in RL are keeping me away from such a major decision right now.  I am currently surveying small dogs that could live with me in my small place, and that are more couch potato than field hound.  There is good walk aound space here, but no dog park, so outside it is always going to be on a leash.

I was thinking yet another breed of dog that Ginger is. Same height, and one that is as big of a couch potato that Ginger is. Ginger, for the most part, here is her schedule:

    Eat: 2% of the day

    Play: 2% of the day

    Poop: 3% of the day

    Sleep: 93% of the day

She isn't overweight, but her broad and muscular body makes her look chubby.

I shared this pic before in the Moose Factory, but here is my "granddog", Dakota.

    Dakota-1.jpg

He spends about every other weekend with me, and we get along quite well.  My son and his family rescued him from  a shelter.  He is really well behaved.  One time I gave him a bite of the sandwich I was eating.  He ate it, then went, got his chew bone, and laid it at my feet.  And they tell me dogs can't reason!

    I also have Chipper.

    WiscTrip2009015-1.jpg

He's a Grey Normal cockatiel, he's somewhere between 15 and 20, and he says, "Chipper," "Glad to meet ya!", "You're funny, so funny," and "Pretty Boy!"

I am allergic to cats.  If you want to see a cat go crazy, try ignoring them.  Better yet, try to shoo them away.  I've had them actually sneak up on me and jump into my lap.  These were friends' cats who normally are rather stand offish with most people.

Animals are probably more intelligent than we once figured.  I found this article (you may have to register) interesting.  Also, this one.

I have a hundred year old recording of "Daddy Wouldn't Buy Me a Wow-wow".

Is this new avatar a dog you want, or just some old mutt you picked up?

I would take any dog that is a rottie actually. And that mutt was a picture on the internet, thought he looked cute.

Quite right.  If you get a pure-bred Rottweiler, you will have one of the dogs of all dogs.  I like rottis, but I am a setter/spaniel guy, and they are a bit much for an old codger.

If you go through your teen years with a rotti by your side, you will be imprinted on the breed for life.  The nearest thing I ever had in appearance to a rotti was my Gordon Setter (Geordie).  Pretty much the same black and tan markings.  Rottis are black dogs, and in the heat of a Texas summer, have to be seen to.  They must not be exposed to a lot of sun for a long period or they will get heat stroke.  That is not a good way for a friend to go.

A white dog like Ginger doesn't have this problem so seriously, but you will have to take special care with a black dog.  No fooling, rottis are black dogs with tan markings, and not tan dogs with black markings.  This puts me in mind of a racist joke I heard recently about zebras, but I won't retell it here.

Maybe you should consider a less popular dog with fewer $$ attached.  Remember, a cheap rotti will be a bad one unless you happen to get a rescue.  Rescued dogs have their own problems.  You are not that far from Best Friends up in Utah, that you couldn't take a look up there, especially if you were willing to take on a dog with a problem or two.

I don't know, but I think it is pointing in the direction of another Ginger.

Deaf as she was, she is a good doggie. And I wouldn't mind having another Stratfordshire or whatever you call them. I figure having 2 Gingers (different colors) would be good.

Here is a present for you, Josh.  en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Staffordshire_Terrier

If you start from here, you can research to your heart's content.  Your puppy has a long and distinguished history, if somewhat spotted by stupid people.  I assume you wouldn't be getting an imported dog.

I have chickens i don't count them as ranch/farm animals as they are often bred in factories(check out RSPCA chicken anti cruelty campaign) and homes. My neighbours have them too.

I have 4, 2 old ones, 2 young ones. They used to lay an egg an day but now they lay eggs about every 1, 2 or 3 The young ones lay more frequently. they are all hens.

Of the young ones there is a long necked white one, is a bit frisky and lays eggs nearly every day it also likes to randomly make loud sounds randomly. there is also a red-crimson-umber one, likes people a lot. Of the old ones, theres a faded brown one with black, is nice and is basically a normal chicken. (hufflepuff) The other old one is quite...large and is the boss. 9in absense of rooster). Is a bit more aggressive and more likely to peck at one than the others.

We let them all over our garden/backyard... no grass grows except in fanced off areas, there's always chicken poo everywhere and bugs are almost nonexistenet... except for flies.

    In order of weight:

    Orange Matriarch

    Faded Brown

    Little Red

    Frisky White

Apparently thwe white one is a different breed...

We bought them from Chesterfield farm/Queen Victoria market in pairs. Can't remeber which is which.

The old ones are about 2 yrs old, th eyoung ones about 1 yr and a half.

Really? Nobody has canaries or budgies?

And nobody has bug pets worms, beetles, etc.

I used ot have goldfish, and we used to get chickens but the gold fish and other chickens are dead. Our chickens now have never known any goldfish or other chickens.

    Let's see, we've got...

4 cats (down from 7 just a few months ago ~ the ones aged 14-16 passed away). One of the four we have now is 3-legged so he has to stay indoors.

    1 dog. Black Lab & something-or-other.

24 chickens. 7 of them are 3 months old (1 rooster) and the other 17 vary in age with the oldest ones being 12+. They go wherever they want.

We don't count the deer, cougars, bobcats, coyotes, porcupines, racoons, opossums, bears & wild boars (supposedly ~ never seen them but I've been told that they're around here), pack rats, hummers, orioles, robins, finches, bees (lots and lots of honey bees) toads or frogs nor any of the other creepy crawlies that also seem to live here/near here as 'pets'. Although we do feed a number of them.

We had a pigeon for awhile. He/she showed up in the yard wounded so we patched it up and nursed it back to health. Once it could fly it didn't want to leave. As a matter of fact, it took up residence in our hen house. That was fine for 6 or 7 months until one of the chickens killed it. AllenY can tell you...chickens can be mean & tough. They're really nothing more than little dinosaurs. All of our outdoor cats learned early on to give them a wide berth.

Be ultra careful you don't become an animal hoarder. Don't take on more animals than you can handle as this becomes a health hazard to both you and them. Be sure you can afford veterinary care for all of them.

At one point, when my wife was still alive, we had two dogs and five cats. Our annual vet bill ran to over $1,000 if nothing went wrong. At one point, one of our cats developed FIS (feline aids), and bit me. I had a terrible infection and nearly lost my arm. We had this one put down after the quarantine period.

At the time my wife passed away she had three cats, all pure bred, and I had two dogs. I adopted the cats out through Pet Rescue who are very good at this. I kept the dogs until I moved into my current place, where big dogs just don't work. My two Irish Red and White Setters were returned to the breeder who immediately found them a home in Cleveland, OH. Doing well when last I heard.

Eventually, when I am ready, I expect to find a rescue dog on the small side. I'd like a min-pin or something similar. Right now, my health militates against a very active dog, so I may have to settle for something like a French Bull Dog or similar slothful breed.

I really miss my setters: AndyAlert.JPGAndy and

My cat died poisoned around a month ago. I really get angry with my neighbours when I realized that they poisoned him. I still miss him a lot.

    His name was Nikov:

Alejandro: I really sympathize. If you knew which neighbour did it, you could complain about loss of property, I suppose. But then, I expect in Mexico this wouldn't really fly.

My second red setter, Paddy, was poisoned when he was about two years old, but he survived another two years. He eventually died of a fast growing liver cancer. We had a known dog poisoner in the neighbourhood but couldn't find out who it was. The people across the street lost a St. Bernard and the lady that worked in the sales office for the subdivision lost a young beautiful Great Dane. Whoever this pile of cat turd was, he got the Dane with Rotenone and the poor doggy bled out.

    Poisoning is a cowardly thing.
