I thought this would be a good topic for a poll, question is, simply what web browser do you use? If you don't know what a web browser is, answer Internet Explorer. 3.gif Just kidding..

At the time I am using Firefox. Fast, good looking, not so boring. I recently stepped up to FF from IE because of that.

Edit: There is now a poll discussing usage of search engine as well.

Have fun!

Only applies to users of Windows. If you're on a Mac and you don't know what a web browser is, answer Safari. 31.gif

Probably 3.6.8. That is the latest build.

You know actually I thought Safari and Chrome were worse than IE. I never bothered trying Netscape. Of course I tried Opera. Not enough options. Safari= Slow and complicated.

That and also Internet Explorer is boring because it is dull. Firefox has several themes, addons, and an overall better experience over other browsers, making it more fun to use.

Safari is my primary. FF is my backup.

I spoke to a certain expert in IT and web design (dirk 3.gif) and he told me the following:

Safari, Chrome, and Opera all use the most up-to-date web technology. (Whether or not they do it well is another story. I've tried Opera. Too crashy. I find Safari quite stable.)

Firefox is built on a slightly older system, but it's still modern enough. I like FF, but it is quite a bit more of a resource hog than the others. Nowadays, that isn't as big of a problem as it was when I had an older computer.

IE is built on utterly antiquated technology that nobody else uses anymore, but it still drives web designers nuts because it's the dominant browser and therefore the designers must still factor it in to their designs.

Here is my take on the most heard of web browsers.

    • Internet Explorer as you said is based on old technology except is the most dominant. But still it is crashy, slow, and boring
    • Fifefox is a tad old, however is fast, easily customizable. Themes and plugins make it a favorite to me. No crashes or anything.
    • Safari as you said is up to date but still too complicated. First of all it is too modern for my taste, and it is a tad slow (at least on my clunker computer). What? Being a Mac user I should have known you use Safari?! 6.gif
    • Chrome looks neat, except slow as slow as slow can get. Frustrating even at times. My take on Chrome is it is the worst browser.
    • Opera is fast and zippy, however not much to it, and crashes quite a lot. Like you said.
    • Now Netscape, listening to a specialist in computer developing and knowledge, (A Nonny Moose), he says it just wants to be leader and dominant. I never bothered with it
    • SeaMonkey: One of the top browsers in '09 according to Wikipedia. I have no idea how it runs.

    That's my 2c

On my computer Firefox seems the best. IE, like most people say, is slow and the newest version is annoying. Chrome WILL NOT RUN WHATSOEVER on my computer! Every time I install it it crashes and freezes constantly. Firefox is very nice, quick and smooth and has a lot of very cool features and add ons.

I agree with you about IE8. Worst edition ever came out with. If I were to use IE again I would do IE7.

However IE does run slightly better on Windows 7...

I am currently using Chrome with Firefox as my backup. I have found that Chrome is a faster browser than Firefox on computers with no shortage of RAM. Chrome is a memory hog indeed. So on older computers it's very slow, while blazing fast on newer computers.

I use Firefox as my primary web browser, unless I'm on my phone, in which case I use Safari. Internet Explorer came as standard on my computer. I think I've only ever used it once... to download Firefox. 3.gif

iTunes installed Safari on my computer, but I never use it. I'm used to Firefox, and I find it works fine for my purposes.

9% of voters use IE. (Microsoft)

0% of voters use Bing (Microsoft)

Which I think that that is a pretty strong indication that Microsoft really needs to improve their internet related programs. 34.gif

I guess you need a new computer then.

EDIT: I just did a side comparision (giving Firefox somewhat of a head start) to see how fast each browser would open the nytimes website. Google Chrome loaded it two times faster than Firefox on my computer.

If my dad would let me try Chrome out on his zippy old (new) computer, Win 7, Core 2 Duo, With a rather large Raedon, I might change my mind.

    Current computer specs on me.

CPU: 1665 Mhz AMD Athlon XP

GPU: Nvidia GeForce 8400 Gs, latest drivers

320 GB 7200 RPM WD PATA hard drive.

    1.3 GB Ram.

    May make a difference.

Now IE has lost 2%, down to 7%. That gives FF a lead of 2 extra points, meaning that 70% of voters use FF.

I use Firefox mostly. Opera when I feel like a change/testing out a website. I find Firefox gets laggy on any system without memory fox. I have a Quad core Intel i5, 4GB of RAM/4GB of Virtual Memory and that doesnt seem to change much. FF still gets laggy when it uses over 350k of memory, its not bad until the memory usage gets to 1000k (which is more than what my old computer had!!!)

I remember running Netscape on someones old Windows 95 cmoputer and well, CSS doesnt load, nothing transparent and most javascript doesnt work. Freezes constantly and very very slow. It was awesome to see what built the internet though 4.gif

I use FF and Google. That person who voted Bing... that was me. It was a mistake. 4.gif

I used Chrome for awhile but I couldn't keep it up because it wouldn't allow me to use commands like Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V. I use those a lot.

Why would you use a different browser to test a website.

Oh and also I was wondering who voted for that Bing... ?

For searching the internet I use google. I tend to use what I'm familiar with while it still works.

Browser: IE because it's good looking and i've never experienced any problems with the browser. Also, the speed doesn't depend on which browser you have, but on how fast your internet connection is.

Search engine: Google. Easy, relevant hits, and easy to use.

IE isn't all that good looking. However it is zippy on a buff machine.

I utterly hate Bing. Irrelevant hits, or old outdated hits.

When your a web developer you use many browsers to test websites out. I like using Opera since its pretty close to Safari. (I have to use IE sometimes too. 15.gif )

I use Opera now. I used to always use FF but I had issues with it crashing and being really slow.

I really like Opera , very sleek design and "speed dial" thingie.  Sometimes it doesn't work well on certain sites but for those I will fall back on Firefox

also I used Netscape for years and years until they stopped supporting it (I think?)

won't touch IE with a ten foot pole 18.gif  unless it's the only way to get a site to show up  correctly.

FYI, everyone, seamonkey is the successor to mozilla suite.  For Internet stuff, I generally use FireFox for browsing, Thunderbird for e-mail, iGoogle is my default page and search engine, and KompoZer is my HTML  editor/web site maintenance package, but I use FireFTP instead of the publish feature of KompoZer.  All of this stuff is a little dated, but I know how it works and I don't see any need for updating right now.

It is my understanding that Mozilla is actually working on a new Internet suite.

Oh, and occasionally, I use Bluefish as an HTML editor because there are some features there I like.

The only time I use IE is when I can't get a site to show up correctly.

I also find IE actually faster and better looking (even with IE8) on Win 7.

My main argument with Microshaft is that they engage in lockins.  Some of the web things they create with Visual Studio will only run in IE.  This is a rather incestuous relationship, considering that an application development suite shouldn't really have much to do with the way a browser behaves.  It is only one example of developers knowing too much about the operating system's quirks.

The only thing I like that is not context free is COBOL.  With this language, it just can't be helped.  Operating systems and any applications they run should not have any special deals between them.  The O/S lays out the rules, and the application uses them, and doesn't know what the O/S does with the calls it gives.
