Hello.

I have a problem with my Sim city game. Whenever i go to start it, 9/10 times it will crash to the desktop, while the icon stays on the task bar.

Also, this was happening before i installed any mods.

Thanks,

Have you applied all of the Maxis patches such that your .exe is at least to rev 638 and preferably all the way to version 640? (you can verify with right-click, "properties", "version" .. or close to that depending on your op sys)

Also, what OS are you running, as that could have an impact as well. If you have 7 or Vista (I call it Failista) are you running in compatibility mode or as an admin?

There is not enough information in the post to give any kind of sensibible answer.  We need to know what machine you are running, and what operating system you are using.

In addition we need to know what build level your game is at.  To find your game build level, right click the executable and ask for properties.  Look at the version number, and make sure it is at least 638, and preferrably 640.  If you are at 640 you have applied all the Maxis provided patches, and are completely up to date on the executable.

My game crashes occasionally (not often enough to be annoying) to the desktop. I have Windows 7 64-bit, and I don't run SC4 in any compatibility mode or as administrator. However, my SC4 has the latest patches/updates. I might try running the game in compatibility mode to see if it stops crashing, but otherwise it occurs very little.

I've heard that many people have had problems with SC4 on Windows 7, but otherwise I've had no problems (apart from the aforementioned occasional crashing).

You have NOT PROPERLY INSTALLED the latest patch if your version is 638.. after the last patch it will be 640. Follow the steps in Buggi's Guide Look at the "nightlights and updates" section

Well, here are some things to consider. When you install a plugin, mod, or add-on, you take the risk of effecting the game's stability. Doing this is at your own risk, and can make your game unstable if you do not know what you are doing. Also, not having the latest patches and if you are running Vista or 7 (like me) you should also consider running in Compatibility mode (recommended XP SP2) and as an admin. This can greatly improve the stability of SC4 on your computer.

If you do figure out that it is related to a specific pluggin or running mode, please say so, as that can help us in future issues that others have.

I posted this on several other threads related to this:

    .

Also if you are experiencing crashes on Windows 7, try running it in compatibility for XP SP3, and or as an administrator. Also if there is another user on your computer who plays Sim City and they don't have any problems, then try running the game as that user. Not logged on to them, but as that user.

Also DatPacking your plugins will help as well. Keep your plugins organized.

Also I cannot stress this enough, keep your hard disks maintained . As in defragment them, run disk cleanup. Even run the ChkDsk once every so often. Just go to Computer, click on properties for the drive that your game is stored on, click the tools tab, and then perform an error check. Also frequently check your Event Viewer in the system logs for any errors related to disks. Such as a corrupted file system or a block error. If these are present, run an error check, click Check Now, and then check try to fix errors after checking, click start, and it will perform a check.

Also have you recently make some large changes to your O/S? Reset those changes. Also make sure your game is kept on the C drive. That is where it feels home and cozy at. Hope this helps.
