Hello Everyone ! Wow I am going to be a real basket case...Okay first let me explain myself. I have read the tutorials plenty of times and I have played around with the BAT some and tried. I might as well say I am a complete Idiot at 3D Modeling19.gif

But I have ambition to start creating content for the community and of course I think it would be great to design buildings I like in real life cities. Okay here is a picture of what I have started modeling and I need your advice and knowledge greatly.

Okay I am using splines in rectangle mode to start this project...My goal is to build a very simple pencil tower or something like it...I know the scale might be to large for a Pencil tower though. Aright should I move those two rectangles to the front and back that laying on the ground? Is there a easier way to go about this? As far as windows go I know I am not ready for them but what should I be thinking about for them now so they will work out later on ? Hopefully after awhile I will catch on. Remember I am a complete newb at this so I only understand a little...Thanks allot for any help given ! 4.gif Oh by the way...Are there any videos availible for learning? I learn better watching than reading in most things. Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Duke of York

Hard to discern what exactly you are making being that you only have splines. Try adding volume to the building with either "extrude" or by using boxes and the like.

Good video tutorials are difficult to come by, unless you want to make a gun for Garry's mod or texture a low poly model. :\ The one by which I learned max is no longer hosted. Are you sure you didn't read through the BAT beginners tutorial? I know it can be a little tough to digest, but it covers everything pretty well.

Thanks Todd I appreciate your reply to my thread...Okay I kept working on it and reading the tutorials and I came this far. Its going to be a very simple apartment with a style much like a Pencil Tower.

Aright for some strange reason the doors did not come out right so now I am not sure how to fix it ? Also with that circle window up high I left little room for a roof I can see now but I would like to salvage it..Okay if anyone has suggestions for a good free if possible texture download site I would appreciate the link 1.gif...I'm really into pre fab  concrete looks so I would love to find something like that. Now I need to learn how to fill in windows where now it is just a hole. If you have any instructions on that I would be happy to hear them =) Thanks for the support and knowledge !

    Sincerely,

I think for a first project, it's best to do a really simple recreation. If there's a specific building from real life which you like, that has been thoroughly photographed on the internet (or is close enough to you that you can take pictures of the building yourself), and which is available in google maps' street view or bing's bird's eye view mode, then I would do that one as a first building. It might seem like doing a recreation is harder than not doing a recreation, but if you BAT your own building, not only do you have to learn everything about BATing, you'll also have to learn everything about how to design a convincing looking building. What you've made so far isn't in vain though, it's just practice.

But before you do anything I'd follow the BAT Essentials tutorial step by step (and actually follow along in gmax and make the building) to get a little more experienced with it.

I would suggest a smaller scale, more simpler building with which to start, especially since you are still getting used to the interface and the program, the different commands with it, and the many different ways you could approach things to get the job done. Plus, your first BAT will seem like it takes forever to make - but you'll get to the end of a smaller building much quicker than a large building.

Also keep in mind - right now, it's about learning the program and getting the hang of it - so your first few buildings may be disappointing. But once you have the gist of it, and know what to do and how to accomplish what you want, you'll be well on your way.

    Happy BATting.

GOOD TEXTURES ARE MADE, NOT FOUND.
(I get tired of saying that in BAT threads.)

"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level." - Quentin Crisp
"I believe in talking behind peoples' backs. That way, they hear it more than once." - Fran Lebowitz
"Ordinary morality is for ordinary people." - Aleister Crowley

The advice about starting with something small-scale is a very good one. But if you really want to make a pencil tower, you can make it a smaller scale project if you choose a design where you can split it into entrance level, tower floor (that repeats 10-20 times), and then roof. That way the amount of work will be similar to a 2-3 storey building.
