Trash consumption

I've recently started playing again, and was wondering what everyone does about their trash. As of right now I only have 1 city and the trash seems to be filling up the landfills very quickly. I have 1 recycling center, I really don't know how effective those are. Any advice about this?

Trash took me a while to figure out. I've got a couple of systems, depending on the type of city.

In some cities where exporting trash isn't an option, I got into the habit of having a certain part of the land reserved for landfill and I'd swap out landfills from time to time. Let one area fill up, then as it got full, zone another and remove the road access to the first so I could eventually de-zone it. The key was figuring out how much to zone so I wouldn't get stuck with two zones full and nowhere to put my trash.

Another really good tip I got from someone here was that you can build a waste to energy plant and reduce it's funding to nothing. It won't make any energy but it'll still incinerate 500 tons of trash a month. Still a smog-maker so be careful where you put it.

Right now I've got a city of 70k sims exporting trash to two smaller cities that each have a waste to energy that's been de-funded. The smaller cities are primarily dirty industrial and farming so I don't worry about the pollution there. Meanwhile the bigger city is nice and clean, all residential, commercial and high tech industrial with 100% of the trash being exported. It's a nice balance.

As mentioned -

Build 1 recycling plant in each city (reduces garbage generated)

Enact waste reduction ordinace

Build a landfill with Waste-to-Energy plants (and setting the funding to 0$)

By having small landfills in each city however you can chain-sell garbage to your main garbage incinerating city.

The only way to legitametly remove garbage in game is by burning if - don't bother with composition. Just be glad that Simcity doesn't have an ozone layor or greenpeace to worry about.

It might be the black hole mod thing, I'm not sure, but I downloaded something where it throws all of the garbage off of the edge of my city, taking up very little space and never fills up.

The docks are a little more realistic, as they have a cost and look sort of filthy. The other good thing about the docks is that they can be placed completely on land and then "connected" to the water ways with plopable canal pieces.
