This was an interesting question posed on a traveler's forum: which ten cities do you think are the most famous cities in the world?  It's your opinion; there are no right or wrong answers.  I think that the ten most famous cities are:

7.) Berlin

8.) Hong Kong

9.) Los Angeles

10.) Dubai

That's just me, though...what's your opinion?

You can't make a list of the top ten most famous cities in the world and not include Chinese or Indian cities. China and India make up for roughly 3 billion people, approximatively half of the global population. So just take their capitals, and you've got one in two people in the world who know those cities. So I'd say the top ten is dominated by Chinese and Indian cities and just a few Western cities such as New York and London.

Well, there is a reason why European and US cities are dominating these lists: media influence. Los Angeles wouldn't make it to the top ten if it wasn't Hollywood that made this city so famous. London, Paris and New York are repeatingly used in movies and Washington DC is I believe THE most famous gouvernmental city in the world.

well i would say that most big American cities are famous for everyone, where ever you live, New York, LA, Washington, San Fransisco, Chicago, Las Vegas, Miami, and so on...

Also other world Capitals like the european cities London, Paris, Madrid, Berlin are famous, the same goes for Shanghai, Hong, Kong and Sydney.

But if you ask Europeans they would say something like 1. London 2. Paris 3. Brusseles. 4. Rome. 5 Madrid

If you ask Asians, most of them would probobly not mention Brusseles even if that is the EU headquaters, infact Brussels has only been included once.

And no a single african city has been noticed, even tho Kairo, Egypt and Johannesburg, South Africa is modern westerntype cities important for the whole african kontinent.

So depending who you ask and in what situation, you will get different anserws.

But anyway this is my top 11 list of important cities from my point of view (two cities from each kontinent to balans):

1. New York (United Nations, Nato, The united States largest city, and the economic wheel)

2. Brusseles (European Union, )

3. Washington (The most powerful gouvernment in the world (until China takes over))

4. Tokyo (One of Asias biggest cities,most modern and economicly developed city)

5. London (Economic motor of Europe) Zurich banking city, but the amount of money fluency is bigger in London

6. Moscow (The Russians capital, a city influenced by the Oil and gas companies)

7. Johannesburg (Not South Africas capital, but one of the biggest in the country. SA alone stands for 25% of Africas BNP so South Africa is the most influenctiual country there)

8. Buenos Aires (In a nic country with high development, the city is very important for the who South American Country.

9 Sydney is Australias biggest and most importat city, and for the whole Oceanic region.

10. Ciudad Juarez (This may seem odd, but the city of death, is also a city with high income and development, and there are mighty people here trying to get control over the smuggling routes.)

11.Kairo (Well even if Kairo isn't the second best economic city/Country is fits in, because of the contacts of the arabic peninsuela. and its contacts with Israel, its a true city of diplomacy)

12. Dubai (Instead of giving this spot to the Oceanic region, the Arabs gets 1 even tho its Asia. But this mighty city of Great Architecture, Oil, Rich shejk and the fastest buildin capital, it deserves a spot!

Actually Tokyo is not just one of Asia's biggest city but it's THE BIGGEST city in Asia and the world! But i would agree with your list. All except the until China takes over thing next to D.C. lol

"The big five" are New York, London, Paris, Rome, and Tokyo.

But going from there to ten is difficult since the next tier down consists of more than five cities and I see no good way to pick which ones to include. So I'm not gonna bother. Five is all you're getting out of me.

Well, I think we're mixing famous with influential here. The most influential cities are the Western cities because they house headquarters of world organizations. But for the most famous cities, in terms of "how many people know city X or Y", mathematically, you can only come up with Asian cities because the population outnumbers the Western population.

Ahh, but population does not necessarily equal fame.  Case in point: Mexico City, which has more people in its city proper than any other city in the world not named Tokyo, hasn't been on a SINGLE LIST yet in this thread.  Virtually everyone in the Western Hemisphere knows about Mexico City, and that its the beating pulse of the entire nation of Mexico, and yet it hasn't even been mentioned.

Even when it comes to Chinese cities, there's a difference: Hong Kong isn't the most populous city in China; heck, it's not even the most populous city on the Pearl River Delta, but it's definitely the most famous (though perhaps Shanghai should take the spot as opposed to Hong Kong when it comes to China).  And sure, two billion Chinese people know about Xian, but two billion Chinese people PLUS the 4.5 billion people of the rest know about New York.  THAT'S the difference.

Ain't it the truth?  Those five are definitely the top choices for these lists, though I'd include Sydney with them (Rome and Sydney have appeared in the exact same number of lists in this thread so far if you include yours, if I'm not mistaken).  The rest are where things get interesting; I've seen Rio de Janiero on some lists (surprisingly not here yet), Washington D.C., Las Vegas, Athens (which hasn't made an appearance yet), Cairo...it can be surprising what the most famous cities are to different people.

Xian however, or any other Chinese (industrial) city, might be known by the entire Chinese population but have no landmarks and thus not be famous as in known for its...

There are multiple lists that all these cities can go under. The most influential, the most political, and of coarse the most famous cities. But I believe fame has both economics and politics. I believe that we all here feel that New York City should be #1 (This isn't biased. I currently live on the West Coast). On most lists that I have seen, London comes into second place. These two cities are Global Cities by definition because of Economics and Politics (New York being the largest city in the United States, and London being the Capital of the largest Empire on Earth). The next cities down the list deal with global economics and global politics.
