Does your cities really have a positive economy?

Hi guys,

I'm quite new to the world of SimCity 4. Right now I've created a small city with about 4500 citizens and my economy is quite stable(I earn about 500).

I've been browsing the forums and I've noticed that some of you have built REALLY big cities that covers a hole map.

And my question is: Does your economy in those cities really go +? Or are you using any of these "money wells". 2.gif

Greetings from Sweden,

Jimmy

Hi jimutt, and welcome to Simtropolis!

If built well, a city should turn a profit no matter how large it gets. Higher capacity schools and hospitals become a must, though - there are many of these on the STEX. My largest city tile so far has a population of around 280,000, and it certainly makes a good profit, without the need for any money-making lots.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Okey! Then I admire you guys even more! I certainly need to practice A LOT more before I'll be able to build a city with a 280,000 population and a got profit. 2.gif

Can't understand why I didn't begin to play this game earlier. It's really fun (and addictive.... 3.gif). 4.gif

    Thanks!

Just a little question: is there any way to share the economy between do different zones on the map? For example if I want to build an industrial area in one zone that is connected to a city in an another zone and want the industrial area to be a part of the nearby city's economy.

In many respects the large cities are very easy.. as your region gets large, you no longer have to fight the little money battles and you will be bringing in tens of thousands of simoleans a month.. thus allowing you to pay for huge amounts of civics, custom landmarks lots, dense traffic systems, etc. The hardest part is starting out and watching all those pennies.. 4.gif (assuming no cheats)

If you build industry in one city, people from another city can work there if there is a connection between the two cities. The money won't go between the two, although you can make neighbour deals to trade money for power, water, or garbage disposal (you have to pay for the garbage to be taken away).

    Welcome to ST jimutt!

Currently, the largest city I have on 1 tile has about 430,000 citizens and I am making a pretty good amount of money (can't remember specifics but my expenses are around 70K per month and income is around 90K per month). This is all with just residential and commercial zoning and no money-makers (I think I have gambling legalized though, so that's an extra 100 bucks), I created a few smaller adjacent cities that are almost exclusively industrial to help cover some job demand in the main city. The sad part is that I can't play with this city anymore b/c the game freezes everytime I load it 15.gif

Okey 3.gif. Thanks for all your advice guys!

Hmm, is there any existing mod that makes it possible to share the economy between regions?

sadly no, each citys funds and expenses are completely segregated from other cities. Although the Shady Banking (cant find the link but im pretty sure that is the name) does allow you to transfer money from one city to another! But that is as close as you can get to a shared economy. Welcome to Simtropolis!

Try a more affluent city connected to a ghetto with mass transit. Then thousands of poor people come to your city for jobs and such. Bringing you huge profits in mass transit in both cities. I even have two cities funded entirely by that

Hmm, if you build a city and have industrial areas in other zones around the city. How do you manage the economy in that zones? I mean, if you only have industrial there you'll lose money? Or do you?

if you have a city with only industry, you will make tons of money. this is becuase the only things you will spend money on are fire stations and maybe a seaport or two. in return, once you have a lot of industry, you will make tens of thousands of dollars each turn.

in regards to sharing money between cities, i remember coming across a "suburban bank branch" which, if i am correct, literally lets you take money from an adjacent city.

    EDIT:

here is the link if you want to use this

You manage the taxes and transportation fees, but most likely you'll profit almost entirely from the transit. In order for it to work everything has to be in order. And poor people like to take trains, so make sure  have nice straight tracks with a few stops

okey, thanks. I've made an "industry zone" now and it's working out perfectly with the workers and so. But now I'm trying to sell power between my cities. But even though both cities is making a good profit and I've connected them together with power lines I'm not able to transfer any power. :S Is there anything I need to do else than just connect the power wires? (I've deleted the power plants in one of the cities)
