you should show us some pics of your city so we can figure out what the problem is..there's also a forum called "show us your interchanges" you might want to check that out. there's also some new mods NAM, RHW and NWM that you might want to look in to. highway integration requires pre-thought and planning. that's all i can say unless you get more specific.

the best idea is to build connections to other cities using mainly the highways, i would suggest that you not build the clover right now and focus on a single path that curves around the city and at each end have T intersections. this saves alot of space for your downtown.

Also the cloverleaf is a massive interchange in which 4 separate highways merge on to each other to share traffic. This is perfect if you want to connect regional highways together. It will also help you gain more commerce in one particular area because of the influx of traffic. You must also have neighboring cities for these commerce center to develop.

Designate one central map as your city core and have highways linking this core area to its neighbours. Lately, I've actually had the highways transition into avenues near the downtown so the traffic empties right into the areas where I zone commercial. Along the way, to downtown, put on/off ramps that will connect the (usually residential) districts to the highways to really get good use out of them and improve commute times.

In the non-core maps, have the highways go continuously through on to the next map. Not necessarily a straight line - follow terrain contours and target the middle of the land mass of next map as you drag your highway through. This simulates how real regions look. A central hub with spokes pointing out in every direction.

Hope this helps.

when i build highways, i like to stick with avenues within the main city where the cbd is and highway spurs going into it ending at an avenue in the cbd and once the rest of the area is more developed i build a beltway around the city with one end of the spur ending at the beltway and one within the cbd

It depends on what size city you are planning... small cities don't require a huge freeway system.... medium size can go either way... but it you're planning on a large city ... nothing beats a system that goes straight through,.. east, west , north and south and maybe a full loop around your downtown.... just experiment... there really isn't a wrong way of doing things... almost any idea, if goes awry can be fixed with the cheats this game has.....
