I voted for Empire. I like the whole Hoth battle scenes at the beginning. Then again, I hate the part where Luke goes to train with Yoda. I just find that part annoying for some reason.

I think the new ones are all pretty bad, especially acting wise. Not that the originals were better, but I was just a kid back then so I didn't notice such things before they earned a spot in my heart.

I liked Return of the Jedi.  The new ones are not nearly as good as the old ones. Acting boooo!  The short lightsaber duel at the end is fun to watch and I enjoy the battle to take over the control area.  Besides that, its the final movie(in movie years). My 2nd is Empire Strikes Back.

Attack of the Clones was the worst acting but the worst movie was Phantom Menace-dumb storyline.

Had to vote for Sith. Four through six were quite good and I enjoyed them very much. But I liked the more complex plot of Sith. And the acting? Well, most of the acting is horrendous in all of them (Phantom most of all, but it's really not that bad if you ignore Jar Jar.)

On the other hand, Ian McDiarmond is SO good at being SO creepy. 11.gif

Clone Wars was good too. 29.gif

I'll have to go with 'new hope'.... I was eleven when it came out, so I was a the perfect age to get swept away into that wonderful fantasy world. Some of the acting was pretty bad in that one as well (who remembers this line aww, but uncle Owen, I was going to go to tashi station to pick up some power converters ) but it was so new and fresh, no one had really made movies like that before then.

I'd have to rate 'Return of Jed's eye' as a close second, I cut many an afternoon class to see that one over and over again.

I really enjoyed 'Umpire strikes out', but I really didn't appreciate the soap opera-like ending.

As for the newer trilogy, they're good, Jar-jar not withstanding, and the special effects are naturally miles ahead of the originals, but somehow the content just doesn't stand up to the trilogy that started it all.
Of course, that's just my opinion

I voted for Episode VI.    Things were better before the computers did the entire movie.

When I saw it in the theaters when it was re-released, that was the biggest laugh line in the whole movie.

I think the worst was actually Sith. So many important things had to happen, but because the acting was so bad you didn't believe any of the motivations (Anakin and Padme had no chemistry so it was hard to believe what he was doing had anything to do with protecting his great love; I thought the bad guys' acting was terrible). The only decent acting was Ewan McGregor and Yoda, and one of those guys is computer generated. Then they tried to fit so much in that each scene was only a few seconds long, making it even harder to empathize with the characters or feel like you knew what motivated them.

Empire Is still my favorite, Vader is Lukes father, the  sad, all dark and sad about what would happen next. ( remeber this was before the internet was so prevalent and  no  one knew What was going to happen next.)

Sith is a close 2nd mostly because it wraped everything up in a nice package. althought the NOOO Anakin shouts when he finds out  Padme died was not aguishy enough.
They should have made him go into a rage at that point , all he had fought for and all  his un Jedi deeds  were for nothing ( and the empereor Laughs)

I couldn't bring myself to choose between III and VI. 3.gif

The special effects and the sheer majesty and power you felt at seeing the Jedi fight for their order was amazing (even without th especial effects) but VI was very good as well. 19.gif

It's a tie between III and VI for me.

I voted for VI, but if You had a package deal involving all 3 of the classic ones I would've voted for it. I saw Episode I and little bits and pieces of Episode II, but they just went in one eye and out the other.

My favorite was Return of the Jedi, the epic original trilogy came to a thrilling climax and did not dissappoint.  For 1983, the special effects look great! Personally, I feel the ships look far more realistic in ROTJ than Episode III.  The culmination of decades of conflicts in this one mega battle to the death (well, if you read the books, it really isn't the end... naturally, otherwise there wouldn't be books...) The acting in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi has the best acting of all the movies since George Lucas didn't direct them (no offense to this genius, he just can't direct dialogue).  Empire Strikes Back is a close second and Episode III is third.  A New Hope just doesn't feel as Star Wars-y as the others due to the massive technical draw backs that it had.  It's aura is different from the others and the budget shows, even after it was redone.  Though A New Hope probably does the best in character development.

I voted for III.  I saw IV when it was first released and have always wanted the events that led up to it explained, so III wrapped most everything up for me.  I like the way Lucas explained Anakin's fall to the dark side, but I will admit that the relationship between Padme and Anakin did not seem convincing enough to justify some of his actions.

And I loved the special effects.  There were many innovations in FX that were first seen in IV and, at the time, I was amazed with it.  But looking back I have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed in the lack of power that the Force seemed to convey to those that used it (obviously the FX technology wasn't to that level yet).  It just seemed that the Force should have made them more powerful than what they appeared.  As each of the subsequent episodes were released the power of the Force was represented better.

    *raises deflectors*

I would even be interested in seeing the original trilogy remade using today's FX.

I voted for Episode IV - A New Hope. This is the orginal, and the others are just more of the same. The impact of the original movie is the greatest, while refinements may introduce other things, the best is always the first.

This picture should have got an Oscar for the best use of farm implements as props. I have seen weirder machines on farms, but I have also seen a lot of the warmechs there too.

I agree that the relationship between Anakin and Padme didn't really resonate. But IMHO, I think that had to do more with the fact that Natalie Portman can't act. Shoot, I can do better than her, and that's saying a lot because I'm not a particularly good actor.

But there's another side to this. Anakin thinks he wants to be a Sith in order to save Padme. But I think that he actually does it because he has a lust for power and control. Peace through dictatorship seems to be the theme for III.

Then there's this dialogue from II:
    Padme: You're not all-powerful, Anakin.
Anakin: Well I should be! I will be!

So while I do believe that Anakin's desire to save Padme is important, I think his lust for power is the true motivating force because it turns back to having the power to save Padme. That's why Anakin is a natural Sith.

Later, in VI, when he's older and wiser, his lust for power is finally overcome by the desire to save his son.

    *End excruciating plot analysis*

His desire to save Padme and his greed for power are one in the same.  He wants to become all powerful to change the things that are normally deemed unchangable.  Notice the line that you quoted was spoken after the death of his mother, something he wished he was powerful enough to prevent.  He originally wants power to save his wife, Padme.  Lust for power and his wanting to save Padme, are not independent of each other.

@Confused04: A very good point. There is no denying that the desire to save Padme and lust for power are very closely intertwined emotions for Anakin.

But, there are several important plot points that I believe argue the case for power being the larger factor.

    1) In the beginning, Anakin executes Darth Tyrannus rather than arresting him. Not the Jedi way, he says, but he liked it nonetheless.

    2) And this is a biggie, why stay a Sith after Padme dies? He must enjoy the power.

Well, we could probably debate this endlessly and get nowhere I'm sure. 9.gif But this is why I liked III so much. (Wait, that was the topic, wasn't it?) I think that it really did a good job of bringing all of the other movies together. It is sort of the fulcrum for the entire series.

I liked Revenge of The Sith, mainly because the dude who played Anakin (I forgot his real name) was reeeally good looking. 18.gif

Saw it twice for that very reason. I'm not really a fan of Star Wars otherwise. 1.gif

I had to vote for Empire, although in defense of #2 & 3 I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by the complexity of the plot - the bad guy (whose name I can't remember - became the Emperor) had a remarkably subtle plot to take over. Of course, the acting was painfully bad (esp. Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen - those love scenes were AWFUL!!! 32.gif)

I being a former Star Wars nerd have to say Empire.  Why was it the best?  It ended with the bad guys being on top.  I personally HATE all the new ones although (I have to admit) Hayden is nice to look at.

Hmmm, it's really hard for me choose. The redemption of Anakin is VI is pretty good stuff, and the drama and action in III and V is great. You may all think I'm nuts 46.gif but I actually really like Phantom Menace better now when you consider its place with the other five. It's childlish, fairy-tale like atmosphere works better when viewed from Anakin's perspective as an adult thinking back on his childhood. It's probably still not my favorite but it makes a lot more sense now that the series is complete. 2.gif

I never read the Star Wars books but does anyone have insight on where Lucas was intending to take the story in Episodes 7-9? Would he ever allow anyone else to finish the series? 42.gif
