As explained above, should the RMS Titanic be raised or not? In my opinion, I would say no, and for several reasons. First of all, it should be a memorial to those that died on that fatefull night. Second, it would be hard to even with the latest technologys, and in fact that could destroy it. Third, if we did manage to take it up it will fall apart as submarines take it up. However, I want to know what you think.1.gif

Naw. Leave it be. Seems like a big waste of time to raise it.

Hopefully cooler heads will prevail, It should remain were it is, if you want to go down and look around, fine just leave it alone.

The were wanting to raise the Edmund Fitzgerald  as well but the crews widows put up enough fuss to keep it were it is.

after 98 years in the muck at 21/2 miles down she would disintegrate on the ascent, they don't expect the wreck to last the decade either

Not possible.  As Wrightguy0 said, it would disintigrate before it ever reached the surface.  Additionally, even if it did reach the surface, it would turn to powder.  The only thing keeping it intact now is the frigid seawater.  I'd be surprised if it lasts another ten years down there.  It's really brittle now.

Unfortunately, building a replica is also not an economically viable option, unless it were to remain docked for its life.  The Titanic would be so utterly out of step with modern safety requirements that licensing it for the sea would essentially be impossible.  If it were upgraded to modern safety standards, it quite simply wouldn't hardly even look like the Titanic anymore.

Bottom line, the ship and her sisters are gone forever.  Enjoy the photos and paintings.  4.gif

I saw a picture once on the Internet of what the Titanic might look like if she were to be built again while meeting modern SOLAS safety requirements. The main problems I remember were the amount of wood would create a fire safety hazard and the lifeboats would have to be built closer to the water.

Perhaps a good idea would be to build a modern ship with Titanic-style amenities - the "floating palace" look. Most modern cruise ships are built like floating shopping malls with casinos and constant partying so traditional "luxury" is non-existent. A warm, cozy Titanic-style "luxury" ship would definitely find a niche in today's market.

Why? The titanic didn't even last one trip, plus it's about 100 years old now, I guess they could raise it and maybe sell the parts off on eBay to refund the tickets to family member for the people that didn't get there money worth on the voyage.

No, Nay, Never.  The ship is a grave site and should remain undisturbed.

Why go to all that expense?  It is not as if we didn't know why she sank.  It was a combination of hubristic design and poor seamanship.  Generally overconfidence was had by all.  The question that needs asking is who benefits?  Why?  If it is a treasure hunt, I say let Davy Jones keep his plunder.

I don't think there is much point in raising the enitre ship, as everyone has stated it would simply disintegrate. On bringing up artefacts, I tend to think there isn't much harm with near 100 year old ship - in fact, it would be good to have the history available for people to see. Plenty of other graves have been scavenged from for historical reasons - from the pyramids to WWII battle sites, so I don't see any problem in that. However, the fact that it is largely companies with travelling shows and not museums is unfortunate.

I believe there was actually  a plan to make a scale Titanic casino in Las Vegas around 2000: official site and news article. The casino was rejected I think by the council.

Absolutely not.  The plans are wrong.  You can't have "water-tight bulkheads" that don't go to the overhead.  No marine architect in his right mind would condone that these days, the lesson has been learned.  Even if the White Star line was still in business, I seriously doubt any new ship could be called Titanic.  It is a name of evil omen.  Seamen take bad luck seriously.  Leave her with Davy Jones and pass on.

As much as I would love to see a restored Titanic reality sets in and hopes fade away. So in that regard let her stay in place where she is. There isn't anyway to raise it so why destroy it so early...

Quite well, but your comment did not come across as sarcastic, eh?

@N_O_Body: Actually, it did, but you didn't notice. No offence, it's so easy to get misunderstood on the internet, and I should have posted some sort of smiley to make it clear, that it was sarcasm.
    - I don't want to make the same mistake again, so here is a smiley (just so that you know, this is meant in a friendly way). 2.gif

    - By the way, excuse my bad english and grammar, i'm pretty tired at the moment,24.gif

No problem.  Tired?  Well, I guess it is pretty late in Denmark.  What city are you in?

It would be an interesting technical challenge to do so. I would certainly be in our capabilities. However, it's a grave and a testimony to how bad things can go wrong. So let the Titanic be the Titanic.
