Wow -- that picture with those new parking lots in the mid-rise section of CBD is really awesome!!! Super-realistic portray of American mid-size city, maybe there's a lack of expressways + strip malls, but it looks really good already!

I tried to do some strip malls, but the game lacks any GOOD buildings for doing it. The few retail buildings that are possible just become very repetitive and don't fit in quite right. Of course, expressways I gave up on due to the size of the city and, basically, too lazy to tear down the MASSIVE swaths of town it will take to put them in haha. Maybe after I get the entire map filled in and need some new project to keep me busy.... we'll see!

I have tried some strip malls in GRANDEGRAD --- I'll try to post an update to that city tonight or tomorrow and will let you judge what it looks like... But seriously, some expressways are a must when your city is pushing 3 million residents.... I guess relocation is your only option + you can do some tunneling in CBD proper?

BTW, what's the status of public transit like these days in Dickson (# of routes, capacity etc)?

OK, I'm posting an update to GRANDEGRAD with a regional mall with parking -- still a work in progress, I plan to remake it into a typical mall with anchor department stores surrounded by a sea of parking -- but getting the parking spaces to line up is ma big problem -- basically, you have to first build the roads with proper angles and then fill in parking spaces....

Work continues around downtown redesigning roads and building layout to fill in wasted space (too many random plazas and weird space between buildings in the CBD just looked unrealisitc hah).... Here are some shots of from a section of town that I worked on tonight. The redesign goes from the avenue on the left of the screen over to the 40 Wall Street landmark (big skyscraper center right with the mint green pyramid roof on top) and everything in between in this first overview shot.

Still some more work to do on buildings (I have been plopping everything by hand to make sure stuff fits together as best as possible), but my redevelopment project is coming along nicely I think!

This is the next area to be tackled..... the old downtown and one of the original parts of the city. I want to give it that quiet, hometown feel to it with the layout and buildings. No highrises or busy neighborhoods.....

And finally a couple of quick overviews of downtown and the city right now....

Ok, these upgrades to the layouts are working wonders. I like the open parking lot spaces, very American.

Ok.... here is the latest!!  First a quick look at what I was planning on working on....

    Dickson141.jpg

And after a bit of revision..... I opted to forego the small downtown feel for a more "new urbanism" look with lots of green space and office/residential/leisure mix.  I also added a mall to the lower corner for that real American feel haha...

Dickson is either the best or second best CJ on here right now. Skimbo's Dragon Cities are nice, but Dickson just feels like a real city that I could drive into somewhere in America.

Thanks for the comments 4.gif I am really enjoying some of the new areas and the looks. However, I get the feeling from looking at the mid-rise sections in the updated parts of town that it still has a "european" feel to it due to the skilled/executive worker medium density building graphics. I have some ideas in mind..... stay tuned 4.gif

Yeah, I'd liek to see how you get rid of those -Parisian' mid-density apartments and replace them with typical American buildings -- I'd like to see that!!!!4.gif

The problem is that the game was developed by a European company so it's kind of a bummer that we so many Euro buildings. You've been able to make good use of what was given to you, so kudos to you man.

Too bad the parking lots are empty. It would look so awesome if the parking spaces were crowded, with cars, near the mall and thinned out the further you went.

Hey guys!! Been a few days since any updates or anything. I've been so busy and no time to play really. I don't have any major updates to show... just been replacing buildings around downtown still to get rid of that European feel to it. I really wish I could widen the roads, but it would completely destroy the layouts and spacing 15.gif Here are a few eye candy shots from street level.....

This last one is an area of town that is going to be the next victim of some major urban renewal.... stay tuned!

tip on roads, people try to stay off Small roads(the name not simple),so it you can widen one road to expressway then people go farther so they stay off small roads for as long as posssable

A truly awesome update --- pic #2 definitely looks 'American' - and I do like small roads. Older cities all had small roads, even in America -- places like the North End in Boston or Greenwich Village in NYC come to mind -- there are some collector avenues, but the actual neighborhoods are all based on what CXL considers a 'small' road.
