Diagonal bridges

hello

Does anyone know how to get a bridge across a diagonal? It's always red, only allowing me to cross on the straight sides. I want to believe that i saw a mod or something that allowed diagonal crossing, but i can't find. Has anyone solved this problem?

thanks!

Diagonal bridges are not possible at this time (and may not ever be), at least the draggable kind. I believe I remember seeing someone had created a kind of a diagonal "lot" bridge where it had a fixed length and was plopped like a lot. I'll need to do some digging...

I may have been thinking of these by Glenni. They are purely eye-candy (not functional) for use in scenic areas. Or this by Dareka (scroll to about the tenth item down). It's functional but part of a canal set.

thanks for digging those up, but that is a real bummer. why is it so difficult to mod?

From what I've read, it's because bridge and tunnel capabilities are hard-coded into exe file so there's nothing we can do about it. That's also why you can't create tunnels with the RHW.

There is something you can do in the meantime. The elivated roads/OWroads/avenues in the NAM can be plopped on water but you will need to flatten the ground underneath. This can be done by holding Ctrl+Alt+Shift as you click on the god mode button to get the tools back.

As CaptCity already said: Real diagonal bridges are not possible. But with the use of the 'setsealevel' cheat and a bit of terraforming, you can also build 'bridges' with draggable networks.

Take this older picture as an example (click to enlarge):

Lately I tried out another idea, below you see the result. This is plain draggable road:

Except for the lot-based workaround, all of the proposed solutions above will work perfectly as traffic networks. None of them will allow ferries to cross underneath though.

Could you please give a list of the detailed steps that would be used to create these bridges?  Thanks!

hmm..i have the nam, but it keeps going under the water when i use the puzzle pieces even though i leveled the terrain below the water. Do i need to raise it to a certain height? Also, you said you were trying something new with the dragable networks in the second pic; could you elaborate a little on what you did/how? thanks! Stephen

You can build "fake" diagonal bridges.. ie they aren't really "bridges" but viaducts that are placed on water.. however the bridge must be carefully constructed by setting exactly the right river depth (15m below your land level at the edge of the river), using the nam "on-slope" piece to lead onto and off of the "bridge", and then fill in with the puzzle pieces. This type bridge could have any shape that you can make using the puzzle pieces. I say "fake bridge" because it isn't built like a normal bridge, and is something of a "trick". It does however function and carry your traffic.

Here is an example from a Mayor's Diary on SC4D posted by emgmod. (thread link)

OK, After I posted I thought I had done an inadequate job of explaining this. It does require the "SetSeaLevel" function in the "extracheats.dll" file (available at several sites.. sometimes called "buggi's cheats"). What this command does it remove the game water and allow you to terraform and build on what would have been "underwater". After doing your terraforming and making your bridge, then you just save and exit.. when you re-enter the city, your sea level will be reset to the level you established when you built your city. Then the bridges will show up properly

WARNING: This will "bomb" all your bridges and tunnels.. (and maybe another minor item or so) but these are easily rebuilt in the normal case. Of course, if you build these bridges before you build your cities then it isn't an issue. But if you already built your city, it can still be done, it's just a bit more of a pain.. Good luck on them... I just built one in one of my empty cities and post that here:

Ok, here is a short tutorial on how to build diagonal networks over water.

    You need the following:

    - The NAM + updated Essentials

    - Buggi's Sim City Extra Cheats (can be found here)

    - Smoncrie's hole digging lots (not necessary, but very convenient)

    Things to note:

    - As the 'bridges' are done by means of a normal elevated network, they will always be 15m above ground. This sets limits on how deep the water may be before the causeway will be submerged in the water. Keep this in mind when terraforming.

    - Every use of the 'setsealevel' cheat WILL destroy any bridges and tunnels on the city tile, so be careful when using it in a developed city!

First, flatten a small part of the land near the water level. This makes it easy as a reference once the water is gone. Next, use the 'setsealevel' cheat. Press Ctrl+X to open the cheat command line and type:

    setsealevel 150

You may use any value between 0 and 200, 0 being the lowest possible water level. Also don't worry, the water will be back to its old level when you reload the game.

    diag_1.jpg

Now, terraform the diagonal passage and build the network.

    diag_3.jpg

Finish the network part, save your city and reload it. The water is back to its old level, giving the impression of a real bridge. This effect can be achieved with any elevated network being able to go diagonal. The best looking ones (im my eyes) will be the elevated heavy rail and the maxis highway though as only those have diagonal on-slope puzzle pieces.

    diag_4.jpg

My 'new' idea is a bit more complicated. Since the vanilla version it has been possible to sometimes build road networks with retaining walls and pylons. Mostly this occurred in mountainous and/or jaggy terrain. Unfortunately, these pyloned parts generally were also sloped. So if the road could be forced to stay flat and the maximum distance to the terrain be raised, this could fake a diagonal bridge.

So I had a short look at my slope mod with the reader if there is something interesting for me there. Some trial and errors, and then I found what I searched for. The result was this:

    diagonal_100210-2Jan001265838254.jpgdiagonal_100210-2Jan001266588955_1.jpg

    After saving and reloading:

    diagonal_100210-2Jan001266589123_1.jpgdiagonal_100210-2Jan001266589164_1.jpg

It may seem that anything is possible in these pictures. The are some limitations though. First, it will only work with the road network. Any other network I tried built solid walls of terrain underneath them. The road seems to be the only network being able to rest on pylons (another .exe hardwired code?). There is also the limit of only complete flat roads (or in some cases only completely constant sloped roads) while the slope mod modification is active.

    Hope this helps. 1.gif
