Well, you should try working on the BAT Essentials tutorial in the Omnibus (the button at the top left), that will cover some of the basics you need to learn and understand the program. Once you know how to model, you can make what ever you like. If you want to make a skyscraper, simply apply what you learned to making one.

One of the best things you can do is open up gmax and just play with the shapes and modifiers to get a feel for what they are and how to make them. Familiarize yourself so that you aren't scrambling when you read any tutorials.

If there are specific questions, I suppose here would be the place to ask (no need to make another thread) Best of luck,

-Todd.

This is the equivalent of going to an artists' forum and saying "I have all the brushes and paints, how can I paint a masterpiece?"

The best advice, which has already been given, is to work through the tutorial by phillipbo in the Omnibus section of the website.  It is long, and covers a lot of ground, but the information there is fundamental to understanding the program (gmax) and how to get what you want out of it.

You won't find a "paint by numbers" method of helping you get a skyscraper anywhere in the forums here - you basically have to learn to drive (ie. use gmax) in order to get where you are going.  SimHoTtoDdy's advice of just opening gmax and messing around is what I did in the very beginning, and you get a feel for the interface and the options that way.  No one has to see your "creations" at this stage, as you're just messing around with the program.

Patience is the key - if you're an "OMG I want to know now Now NOW NAAAAOWWW 011011010101!" type of personality, then BATting will be a frustratingly long road - there's no "easy" button to push, but once you get comfortable with using the tools, you'll be able to create whatever you want.

Best of luck.

P.S. - I think there's a size limitation to picture files in your signature - you may want to shrink the Animaniacs pic in order to not get your "hand slapped" by a mod.  4.gif

GOOD TEXTURES ARE MADE, NOT FOUND.
(I get tired of saying that in BAT threads.)

"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level." - Quentin Crisp
"I believe in talking behind peoples' backs. That way, they hear it more than once." - Fran Lebowitz
"Ordinary morality is for ordinary people." - Aleister Crowley
"No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.' " - Dani Bunten Berry

Remember also to check the Gmax help and the Gmax tutorials (you can download them from the same page where you downloaded the program).

Think also to Lego bricks: a skyscraper isn't a sckyscraper, but brick+brick+brick+...; and aslo a 3d model isn't a model, but sphere+box+tube+...

I also suggest not to start from dificult shapes (skyscrapers), but from little and simple things, like a little house.

Try to build each detail, maybe take as example your house (you won't need reference photos).

Good luck in playing with shapes 9.gif
