Los Angeles Remake!

Hello all, while I'm still working on New Haven (got a lot of big stuff that has taken a lot of time) I wanted to try my hand at remaking a city with Simcity4.

I always wondered why New York was so common to see and I relized why. It's easy (hear me out) in the regards to it's road network. Los Angeles is the project I wanted to take on and notice three huge problems that Simcity4 causes with this.

Freeways! Even with the RHW and NAM there are many problems! The 101 is a sucken freeway with 90% of it's off and on ramps going into tunnels under one way streets next to them. I've tried many, many ways to get around this and though it's possible it looks so awful! Also the 110 has some oframps and bridges that are 100% impossible to copy or even attempt to make something that looks like it. And don't get me started on some of the interchanges.

One way roads and diagonals! There are a lot of one way roads in L.A downtown area. Now this wouldn't be a problem if they were not three laned! I tried using the RHW three lane but hand so many conflicts and problems that I ditched the idea and decided on the two lane ones that came with the game but then the diagonal roads! They go a very gradual degree Alameda St meets Main St near Union Station (I've done my homework) and from their they go their different ways in a gradual split something like Times Square. Now I know I could snake the road and it will look diagonal in my transportation map but it will look 100% un real in the game.

Commute time! In real life people travel about 150-200 miles  (about 1 and half to 2 hour drive with good traffic) back and forth to LA's Downtown area for work with complaint but they do it! In my test city people left their homes if they had to travel from the edge of the large tile to the center of it on uncrowed freeways and roads.

Some people have attemped this city I'm sure and just wondering did any of the above limit your city desgin or stop it all together?

I'm still going to press on with my LA remake but with some of the above problems it makes me wonder how correct can I get it?

My conclusion is that LA is such a ridiculous city that not even the craziness of SC4 can handle it, because it just shouldn't work.

I live near LA and have been there frequently and the things you see there have always inspired aspects of my city design. The problem is things are crazy irregular and downright peculiar in LA and many of the most interesting aspects of the city just cannot be created or would have to be compromised because of the limitations of SC4. But if you really wanted an impossible project it would have to be San Diego the lay out of the freeways there could not even be matched by SC4 in small areas. California has some out of control freeway networks that in every way demonstrate the limits of SC4 to recreate anything close. I would even go as far to say that making recreations of any city in SC4 is doomed to encounter compromises that ruin the integrity of the project. But if you wanted to one could capture the feel of a SoCal metro are in the game. The thing is that there are funny consequences to suburban sprawl on is that while many from the suburbs commute to areas in the city many in the city commute to the suburbs. One could balance it quite well if they were to try.

The thing is that the game could make a balance fairly well if one were to create the right balance it wouldn't work like a so cal city but look like one. Achievement of the actual operation of a So Cal city in the Game is impossible. Also I would Say that the biggest problem in the game Vs. real life to achieve is the fact that LA has many people living around it that are Heirs, Celebrities, Trust Fund Babies and the Super Rich that have houses all over the Coastal Hills of this area that infact don't work in any of the areas in the city. So to create these wealthy neighborhoods would create the problem of them being more common than there being jobs in the game.

"In real life people travel about 150-200 miles (about 1 and half to 2 hour drive with good traffic) back and forth to..." Your commute time math is flawed, no one in North America ever drives at 100 mph regularly. Italy, now that a different story.

No my time is correct, I live in Riverside county and from here with good traffic it takes 1 and half to 2 hours to get there. And the vast majorty of people commute to LA just like San Deigo, sure a lot live near by work there but even more do long commutes.

Anyway, my biggest problem is abut the road network but I have started work.

I would love to try to imitate cities. Unfortunately my copy of Simcity 4 won't render a region so I have to rely on other people to send me rendered regions. Right now I'm waiting on someone to send me the Ottawa region so I can try to imitate my hometown. If anyone would be so kind to send me any region of real-world cities, I would really appreciate it. Send it to roberto_ionescu@rogers.com if you choose to, but please no spam.

It's obviously impossible to recreate LA. Look at the gid pattern. You simply can't do that in SC4.

Anything is possible in SC4. You might have to wait until the NAM team releases one-way FAR pieces. The onramps dont have to be entirely realistic. The third option is the easiest, try a NAM simulator.

Everything will have some setbacks, I'm holding off recreating Melbourne because of the sole reason of having no diagonal tram pieces.

This thread will be used for discusion on my CJ for issues, ideas, concepts anything that doesn't directly deal with my Cj but indriectly does. For actual comments on my CJ please follow the link and post there. Right now my biggest problems is buildings, custom buildings that is and am in need of some odd shaped ones. Union Station would be my biggest request.

Also anyone know if it's posible for RHW3 and higher to go into bridges? Or do I just not have the newest verson?
