What is it? It takes up alot of land and barely provides any jobs. It looks realistic but other then that why would you ever use agriculture?

it does not produce air pollution, but quite a bit of water pollution. its very cheap to zone, and is not very picky about where you put it and how long the frieght ride is. If you get enough agriculture you can get the farmers market, you can alos get several other rewards i believe.

It will provide thousands of jobs if you want.. its more a matter of what kind of a city tile you want rather than what works

Simpants: Yes you do.

And Bow-wow-wow: The advantage lays in being non-polutant for your air. They do polute the water though, which doesn't have to be a problem, if you don't lay water pipes underneath your farms. Contrary to what you're saying, it does produce plenty of jobs, as it aren't just the buildings that provide jobs, the fields do to. I agree with you that they are a major realism aspect, and you don't have to use them if you don't want to.

LOL, i think im the first one that found this out, agriculture increases commercial($) and industrial ($$) demand in neighbouring cities. But it also increases transport usage (especially rail) in all the region.

You can squeeze more out of your agricultural zones by making the lot sizes smaller. Divide a property 16x16 tiles with just one farm on it into 4 properties with 4 separate farms. Faster way to raise revenue and demand for other industries and services.

Gierek2010: You probably are, as I've never heard of it before. The game calculates demand citywide, not region wide, but does 'dump' all not used up demand into neighbouring cities. I guess that because of the jobs created, more sims move in, raising the CS$ and ID demand in the city, but because you only zone RES, the demand gets extrapolated, as it is called, into the region.
