During an expeditionary to the west, Bayview-born Captain William Anker sailed for months in the East Sea until coming  across a flat landmass with several rivers meandering around the plain like landscape.  After sailing for days in a maze of winding waters, Anker noticed the peak of mountains to the north.  He sailed around the waterways without ever putting his eyes off of the mountain range.  He reached a dead end, but a smile slowly crossed his face.  He had enough land (and enough of each gender members in his crew) to found a new port city.  On April 15th, 1706, William Anker founded a new town, not named after him but his old-faithful ship, which would forever be called Shanton Harbor.

Just a small teaser of what's to come...sit tight, more is on the way very, very soon.

Very nice work you did with this harbour area. That city has some of the most transparent, clear water I've seen in my life! But indeed, the boats do look like they float above the water. 3.gif Perhaps some weird graphics bug? Who knows?

Keep up the great work!

    Update 1

Development was little and slow after the town was first established.  It had all the basic functions like post office, homes etc. as more people starting moving over from the East.  A shipping port was established prior to the beginning of the industrial revolution, but as the town grew there were no cars and the town was developing so fast that citizens became pressured more and more to move around.  Though a small rail line was built around the perimeter of the town, it didn't help very much getting goods to the "heart" of the area.  In April 1806, Russian Engineer Juicy J.  began planning a canal system, which today is still recognized as one of craftiest early engineering feats of Super Grand Metropolis.  People and goods could get moved around on ferries powered by the Watson engine via a network of very carefully built canals.  The idea was to dig the canals up to the coast and let the sea water fill them up after releasing the damns used to hold the sea water back.  After the network was built, boating became one of the most widely used methods of transportation in the region.  The Fishing industry is now recognized around the world as well.  Cargo ships were coming more and more frequently to the harbor so Vandy Shipping Co. had to design and plan a new port a few kilometers west, which sprawled into what today is called the Shanton Industrial Sector.  But enough talk, picture time nao:

    1.jpg

The older ferries were preserved and some became dining facilities--such as the Annabellin--seen here:

    2.jpg

During the SimNation Civil war, industry and economy here boomed.  An army base and soldier training facility, which today is called the Shanton Star Central Millitary Academy and Air/Millitary Base (S.S.C.A.A.M for short, though not really short lol), was devoloped.  Factories and such were built and use of the new Vandy Harbor increased following the demand for artillery and infantry technology.  The base is only for the finest students, training some of the finest generals in war history.   Today it has all the millitary trimmings and full scale university setting with book stores/restaurants, a hospital, dorms, mueseum buildings, learning buildings of course and even a small sports field:

    3.jpg

Old Downtown seen during sunrise.  Not very large by today's standards and was superceded by the Downtown Shanton/Shanton Bay area, but the waterfront remains a historical landmark and many tourists still flock to see it.

Looking great, Ian! You've really improved since the last CJ I remember seeing from you. I like the use of "natural" canals and PEG's creations. They look fantastic and really compliment what you've done.

    UPDATE 2: Shanton Harbor

Vandy Shipping Co. moved west of Shanton Harbor to expand their shipping port, into what is Super Grand Metropolis' largest shipping port today.  This used to be a rather small fishing area/inport & export hub, but even the traffic it saw in it's earliest days was perhaps the busiets in SGM.  Reason for this was many shipping routes (rivers) intersect in the area and to the west is the sea where even more shipping lanes and seaports lie.  All in all, the area is quite busy with sea going traffic, which prompted more and more industries to move here during the Industrial Revolution.  The entire area is called the Shanton Industrial Sector, but the port itself has a name: The Grater Port of the West.

The obvious most common site is the tons of freight and loading docks for these great ships that come in and out of the port every day (even Christmas).

    17.jpg

The harbor bridge, constructed in 1909, stands firm and strong (with all the necessary maintenance of course) 100 years later.  It is seen crossing the mouth of the harbor at dusk.

    18.jpg

    19.jpg

    20.jpg

    21.jpg

Naturally, with all the imports and exports that go in and out of this port daily, there must be a way to ship so much freight on land.  There are many railroad yards and sidings to accomadate this.

    22.jpg

Being the industrious capital of the heart of Super Grand Metro, Shanton contains power plants the provide power to the rest of the "mini metro" area.

    28.jpg

There is a small sector of apartments for middle class sims who live and work in this area.  Because of today's advanced computer integrated manufacturing technology and high tech industry jobs, the sims are actually in very decent living conditions and recieve some substantial pay.

You have a few really cool ideas executed here, I'll have to keep an eye on this. I think if you spend a little more time polishing an area before calling it done, your images will improve dramatically (That avenue stub in the gas tank picture comes to mind).

Looking forward to what you do next,

SimHoTToDDy:  Glad you stopped in and gave your honest opinion!  I do try to fill up every last part of each city tile, but I may miss a few details like the little avenue stub.  It's not perfect, but I'll bear these ittiest bits of detail in mind in the future.  Thanks! 4.gif

    UPDATE 3: Shanton Beach

So ummm, lol.  Not a whole lot of "history" going on in this section of town.  All that can really be said is that it has been growing to house (and currently resembles a denser Florida populated area, such as Pinellas County, on the west side of Tampa Bay) the tens of thousands of Sims moving into the metro area monthly.  It's perhaps the SECOND fastest growing area outside of dowtown..38.gif

The sun rises over the ocean and it's shaping up to be a beautiful day for our commuters.  As the last bit of lights turn off, last scraps of breakfast served and everyone has showered and brushed, they prepare to head off to work.  Below you'll see one of the more denser areas..

    SB4.jpg?t=1257472482

Because of the effeciently constructed mass transit system, Sims needn't rely only on commuting by car only to get stuck in noisy traffic; they can use ferries, high speed rail and heavy rail as well as the more common busing system.

    SB3.jpg?t=1257472642

    32.jpg

    34.jpg

Because of this (and the obvious NAM Traffic Simulator capacity stimulus 3.gif ), those "rubber tramps" who do opt to travel by car don't have to worry much about traffic.

    33.jpg

    SB1.jpg

The day can pass rather quickly for our workers and they find themselves little time to stop at the local Subway or related before heading home...

    38.jpg

    SB5.jpg

    SB2.jpg

Fortunately the trains and ferries still run, for those who get stuck working the infamous midnight shifts..

    G'night!
