question on running multiple cities

I never tried building more than one city at a time. But from the forums I get the feeling that thats not a good idea. So I have few questions here

1) How do you switch between cities. Do you have to go back to the main screen. Thats painfully slow

2) What happens to city B when you are in city A. Is it paused or auto-running?

1)You can only have 1 city running at a time, and if its painfully slow to switch then you probably couldn't run 2 at the same time even if it was possible.

2) City B is paused, when you return it will be exactly the same as you left it unless you add roads that connect from city A to city B while you are playing in city A.

City B is paused while you are in City A. But, yes, I normally work on one city, that's a good way, since you are focusing on one.

Technically, I don't think it is possible to run multiple cities at once...not with a dual screen or two interlinked computers that share information. However, if you really want, you could consolidate small and medium city tiles into a large city tile, but I don't think that will work once cities are established.

It wouldn't work and then again, smaller cities run smoother on slower PCs. The advantage of having two or more cities is that you can put dirty industry City B and then your sims in City A (your main city) won't complain about pollution, but will be going to work to City B. You can also put coal power plants into City B, then buy power from City A. It's the cheapest source of clean power (unless of course you use custom power plants from the STEX).

ok that cleared a few and got me confused a bit 4.gif

    1) So lets say I have a main city A and dirty city B: I am running A currently. People can A can work in B, but nothing in B can catch fire? Nor the industry type will change?

    2) Lets say I am transferring all garbage from A to B. Will garbage in B grow even though B is paused?

On same note, if  I am running A and buying power from B, will B's power plants get old?

No, not unless you go into city B.

City B will be paused and will stay paused.

I have cities that are neighbours and 100 years apart!!!!!

Isnt that kind of cheating? Just put a power plant in neighboring city and never go to that city, you never have to replace it? free power?

Imported power cost more then placing a powerplant in your city so its not free... but yes you do save the money youd have to spend on support otherwise.

Also, as City A grows and city B stays paused, City A will need more power from City B. Eventually, you'll have to go into City B and build another power plant, or go into another neighboring city.

I never knew you could just build one region as residential and then the other region as commercial or industry and then they would go to work there if there roads were connected,i alwayz thought that yu had to have both jobs and res in one city, this will help me out ALOT!

You have to be careful though if you are going to segregate various industries. Sometimes the sims will complain that the commute is too long.

I dont advice splitting up R and C atleast not completely as it can be hard to make enough money in a town with just R. However placing I in another zone works great.

The game works fine without splitting them.. in fact it works better.. you MAY do it, but it isn't necessary.. or even of much benefit..  I believe this started from the "how to's" that are sugested for "rapid growth starting a new region" on the Maxis (EA) site.. however for normal game play, I just don't find it that useful.. of course to each his own.
