Well, the first major thing i would like to bring up is that you should understand that nuclear power

gives off radiation. You know that it has possibility's of core meldowns. But you have the money and space

but you just don't know were to place it. Perhaps you came up with an island in a lake, or ocean?

or maybe a road that leads away from the population and urban areas? See, there are many things

you have to place in mind to add this nuclear power plant to your city. Some may say it is not important,

it's just a power plant. But no, it is a major one too. Place them on a island or maybe on a

hill away from people. I would greatly suggest to place it on a island, but not the faith of

Three Mile Island!. Add a bridge and police kiosk near it. Also add a medical clinic near the bridge

becuase it will help people who are near get medical help. Well, another thing is to place a lot of

parks near it too.And add a bus stop. You can also gain a lot of money from selling power

to neighboring cities. But remember if you put it on the island it is around water. Contamination

will be possible. Add a water treatment plant near it to lower this.

None of that's necessary. The only reason to get a nuclear plant is because you can place it in a populated area without toxic byproducts contaminating the area. It doesn't emit radiation unless you have a meltdown.  It may decrease desirability, as some people would be afraid to live near one, but there is no point in placing a medical facility near it. If a meltdown happened, such a facility would be pointless. People would go AWAY from the contaminated area as fast as possible.

And the chances of a meltdown realistically are very low.

I don't know if you're aiming for something realistic, maybe a fire station near the plant would be a good precaution.

Like BattleshipAgincourt said, Nuclear plants are very safe and dont generaly need isolation. Putting them in D-I zones are a good idea since D-I factories dont really worry about desierability. Having a firestation near it is good if you put it in D-I zone since fires break out in those zones more often.

I have experimented with deliberated fires in nuclear power plants and the Maxis one can stand a lot of in-game time burning. I have been watching how a nuclear plant was burning for approximately two RL minutes. In this space of time, your firefighters can reach every part of your city and control the fire; so the possibilities of a meltdown made for a fire are really low unless you do it on purpose as I did.

Never mind, of course, that SC4, like SC3 and SC2, exaggerates the risks of Nuclear plants over what they are in reality. In the 50+ years since nuclear power has been in use, only one event has ever occured which was an actual full-scale meltdown killing nearby residents - Chernobyl. Most "incidents" (which are rare in and of themselves) are easily contained and mitigated and result in no actual threat to the public.

And, thank you Maxis for perpetuating this misconception, but no nuclear power plant will ever, under any circumstance, no matter how ridiculously severe, produce a mushroom cloud. Not even a small one. The necessary critical mass of uranium isn't in any of those reactors. If it was, they'd be exploding all the time (which they're not, obviously).

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

You know I read in a science book once that nuclear power has only caused 32 deaths (chernobyl) but coal over its lifetime in terms of mining and power production has cost over 100,000 lives.

Technically one could - but only if, for some insane reason, it was built to be able to. Even in game, as was said, it's difficult to have a meltdown - either an uncontrolled fire or letting it get more than 100 years old. There were way more than 30-some deaths from Chernobyl if you count long term ones from cancer, etc. But really there are only 2 nuclear accidents most people ever heard of - 3 Mile Island (no deaths and this is an old plant) and Chernobyl (which was a terrible nuclear power plant even by 1960s standards and the direct cause of failure was the operators doing an unauthorized experiment.) Funny thing is, nuclear plants in the US are less safe due to fears -no new ones built since 1979 and modern ones are much safer, more efficient and produce less waste than the ones from the 1970s.

i like to put my nuclear plants in the middle of downtown surrounded by parks. i think they look cool, and i've never had a problem with one so it might as well be in the middle of downtown. the parks offset the undesirability.

I think Maxis does something which is to make the risk feel significant to the player.

We, as players, have little remorse for our sims. We tear down housing, rip out transit networks, and so forth.

The reason nuke plants don't screw up so much in real life is because of the intense care put into them. So I think it's fair for Maxis to work into the game a major disaster should the proper care not go into it.

Plus, the game doesn't require a lot of other things, such as having to be next to water or a nuke waste facility. Having only one risk which can be prevented is a fair tradeoff, in my mind.

Actually, they stopped making nuclear power plants after Chernobyl, in 1986, not 1960's.
