Are there any programs for removing the boxes from buildings that don't require WinZip? I'd rather not buy WinZip when I hardly ever use it.

If you mean the brown 'gift-wrapped' boxes that appear on lots, they are the result of missing models for lots that you have placed in game. Check for dpependencies for the items you have downloaded and installed. If you are looking for a mod that replaces the box with something else so you can see the lot, try Pegasus's Oops mod. It will replace the box with a colored 'flag'. If it's WinZip you want to replace, there are others available online that don't cost.

Hmmm ....  if I get you right you need an alternative for WinZip in order to extract the custom content from the STEX (LEX, ...) files?

There are quite a lot of freeware zip programs available out there. Just type "freeware zip" into your search bar ....

Windows will extract files from a zip file. Right click the file and select "extract all".
