SimCity2000 is now available for FREE download at Abandonia.com. I am working on getting Streets Of Simcity and the Skurk-Urban Renewel Kit uploaded for download also. We'll see how that goes.

I am on staff at Abandonia, so don't forget to say hello in Abandoned forums while you are there.

CHEERz,

Hi, all,

Good Ol' SC2K, my son and I had some good times with that.

As far as I can tell, SC2K is not for sale anymore, it is called  "abandonware" on the site.  Here is what Wiki has to say about copyright law:

Copyright law does not recognize the term or concept of "abandonware". There is a long held concept of abandonment in trademark law as a direct result of the infinite term of trademark protection. Currently, a copyright can be released into the public domain if the owner clearly does so in writing; however this formal process is not considered abandoning, but rather releasing. Those who do not own a copyright cannot merely claim the copyright abandoned and start using protected works without permission of the copyright holder, who could then seek legal remedy. Hosting and distributing copyrighted software without permission is illegal. Copyright holders, sometimes through the Entertainment Software Association, send cease and desist letters, and some sites have shut down or removed infringing software as a result. However, most of the Association's efforts are devoted to new games, due to those titles possessing the greatest value.quote>

I will leave this topic for now, I'm waiting for clarification from other staff.  I may later move it to Gaming Talk if the admins feel  that it is not discussing piracy.

Thanks.

Is anyone having trouble with the software itself by chance?

I own a legal, original copy of Simcity 2000 on CD-ROM from 1996 which I had as a kid. Unfortunately it won't install naturally on a 64 bit Vista system anymore. This is because while the game itself is Windows 95 32 bit compatible, the setup.exe installer program is legacy and I think only a 16 bit application.

The solution is to play with the  game .exes using a modified registry with that copied from a PC with the game installed. I was able to download the relevant files and get the game working after visiting a forum and clicking on a download link to the said file.

I won't post a link rather you should google this independently if you have an issue. Just like abandonware I'm not sure the legality and need to CMA

I'm a big buff of these old games if anyone has anything to ask I'd love for this to become some kind of old skool Simcity club on ST. We should work on tilesets in SCURK!

Hi, again, the admin opinion is officially out, on the front page, actually.  19.gif  Dirk has posted a news article encouraging members to visit the site, so it doesn't get much clearer than that.

I will now move this to the more appropriate Gaming Talk Forum.

Thanks.

Hello everyone! Long time no me 4.gif

I am just a staff member at Abandonia, but they work very closely with the copyright holders of these games. I am the one who suggested they hook up with Dirk in the first place. Actually, I mentioned Simtropolis many times, as I am very fond of this website, so it was indirect casual plugging, you might say.

It is obvious that MAxis/EA are not going to make any more moneys from games that are considered abandonware.

If you already own SC2000, that is all good. This is however a very nice stepping stone, to learning how citybuilding simulations workand may make it easier for new Simizens to graduate up to SC4 and CitiesXL style games. There are plenty more abandoned games available at Abandonia. SC2000 is just one of many, many choices. SimAnt, SimFarm, SimEarth, etc.,etc., are all available for free download at Abandonia.

The game will play on any OS, including Vista/WinXP/Linux/MAC. I help test many of these game titles, so I am sure it works.

Abandonia provides links to DosBox v0.72, which will allow you to play these older games on any operating system. Their are also a few other DOS emulators linked and available at Abandonia and they are all FREE!

All is well, and all is okay.

@hamsterTK: It would be great if you could help out! Thank you! Same here- I Dl'ed the files and prompted DosBox to run the game, but never tried to install from my hard CD to Vista. I do have SC2000 on my XP computers though and it works just fine on that OS, as well as my Win2000 PC, of course 2.gif

Yeah, I have not downloaded it because I have the original copy of the Special Edition that I bought like 13 years ago. I have misplaced the box though. I hope I can find it somewhere..

Maybe OP should have made a poll on this? ; )

The admins say yes, it is legal. I own it on CD already, so I don't really need to download it. Trying to load a saved game causes it to crash though. I'll need to have a look into how to fix that.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.
