This is an English speaking forum though, isn't it?

I suppose English is fairly unique in terms of pluralizing loan words (in this case from Latin) according to the rules of their language of origin rather than its own rules.

Not quite unique, Dutch does that aswell, though not for all foreign words. In fact, only for a couple of Latin words, and then there also is the plural produced by the standard rules. Ergo:

Museum --> Musea

But also:

Museum --> Museums.

Or:

Forum --> Fora

But also:

Forum --> Forums.

Korot

Well, "fora" is the technically correct pluralization of "forum", although the internet has pretty successfully kiboshed that one. *looks at page title*

As for "museum", it's of Greek origin, so "musea" is wrong.

5769. Duke: Well, that might be true, but musea is considered the proper plural form here in the Netherlands. It could be that words or which the last syllable looks Latin (-um or -us) are pluralised the Latin way (-a and -i respectively) in Dutch. Don't ask me why though.

5773. Kind of reminds me of a thread called "Anything you want" (from HAIF) here. Except much looser and less focused on topics.

    I personally prefer formulae, but Firefox doesn't recognise it as a word.

    It doesn't recognise recognise, either. I guess that's what I get for not speaking American. 3.gif

    I've officially decided.

    Nindendo DS > PSP

    Why? Because I don't feel like I'm well on my way to developing carpal tunnel syndrome after playing a DS for a couple hours. The PSP makes me scrunch my hands up into a weird position to hold it and to be able to push L or R. Ow. I don't even wanna know what a PSPGo is like.

    Of course, this shouldn't be surpising. I discovered years ago that portable electronics are usually designed for people with smaller hands than me. That original DS that everyone complains is huge and bulky? It's just my size! 31.gif

    Those seem to be more common nowadays, along with the DSi. A lot of people either didn't have an original DS, or did but ditched it for one of the newer models.

    I personally on principle object to replacing something that still works just fine and is not functionally outmoded.

    This is why I have a four-year old cell phone. 3.gif

    Muck308: are you more concerned about radiation or privacy. If you are more concerned about privacy, you might be shocked that there is an accurate way to tell what is displayed on a CRT monitor just by listening to its humming/buzzing.

    Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

    Words to live by:
    "Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

    No risk from the first, and I doubt he has valuable data on his personal computer.

    Er... not through the humming/buzzing. That would just tell you whether it's on or not.

    There is, however, a way to do so using electronics. Although anyone who can get close enough to do that would probably just steal the computer...
