Chat demands one's full attention. Unlike the forum, which can be juggled with other tasks. Thus, it seems like just a drain on time to me and there are plenty of other things I'd rather be doing.

I'm also just not comfortable with the environment. In a forum setup, I can read posts at my leisure, think out my responses, and decide what to read and what to respond to. In a chat setup, I have to partake in whatever the conversation is on at the moment and I have to keep up with it in real time. I tend to be quite awkward in conversation when I'm not talking to people I'm fairly familiar with.

Besides, in case you haven't noticed, I tend to ramble a lot. Whenever I have anything to contribute, I have a lot to say. Using the chatroom requires brevity, which I'm not good with. Unless it's just idle chatter...

"Hi, how are you?"

"I'm fine, you?"

"I'm good"

...and I hate social niceties like this. You go through these routines and nothing has actually been said. All that's been established is that both parties are aware of boilerplate introductory statements and their appropriate boilerplate responses. It might as well be replaced with:

"I am human!"

"I am human, too!"

"Good, then we may converse!"

Blech. Why can't we skip the bullcrap and just talk about what we actually want to talk about?
