Regarding the Saturday due date, the assignment is done in Mathematica and submitted online.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I generally refrain from talking on subjects I do not know the slightest about, and as such will not be talking about U.S. sports.

It's called "summer reading". Basically every school in America does it some way or other. And it isn't special. Other holiday breaks are often considered the perfect occasion to assign a big project, as it is assumed that you will have plenty of time to work on it during your vacation where you aren't otherwise going to be doing anything productive.

Yes, this means that you don't actually get all your time off off, but such is life.

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

7192. Having a holiday job doesn't help either, if you want spare time. Fortunately, we don't have any projects to do over the holidays, though I'm assumed to have read 18 books by the end of the next school year (assignment was given at the start of my fourth year, and I'm starting on my sixth), and I'm behind, so I did try to read some books. Notice the past simple...

Only 2 books?

We (Italy) have "only" 4 books for October (more for December)... plus Math, Latin, etc etc homeworks.

This really doesn't help a good holiday...

btw, we start school at September (12th I think).

I find it quite interesting that the books that are required reading are never ones I would usually read, and are very rarely books I actually like.

I found "All Quiet On The Western Front" a decent read, but I would personally much rather have read "Monstrous Regiment" or "Jingo", both by Terry Pratchett.

I never had summer assignments when I was in school. I usually had assignments over winter and spring breaks and such, but not summer. But, you gotta stay sharp. I suppose having them wouldn't have been all that bad.

Terry Pratchett is very similar to Douglas Adams. I already ordered a few of his books after reading Good Omens.

In other news, last month I discovered that Severus Snape is the most tragic character I ever heard of.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

The university bookstore didn't have Good Omens, but they've put it on order and will send me a text message when it comes in.

Professor Snape definitely beats my previous record-holder for most tragic character I've read, who was Edward Fairfax Rochester from Jane Eyre.
