NAM on strike

Xyloxadoria alerted us earlier today about the National Association of Mathematicians:

Today Punday, 30th August, the mathematicians organised in the National Association of Mathematicians went on strike. There are a number of reasons why the mathematicians chose industrial action, however representatives for the association say that they added together amounts to just "too much". As much as we all would hate to see such an integral part of the education system being subtracted from the labour force, if only temporary, they remain fiercly divided over the root cause. Mathematicians say the employer organisations must consider the real challenges that lies ahead if they are to solve the equations together. Employers have respondend that the current strike is irrational.

It figures. This is another prime example of general disrespect for mathematicians everywhere. Even physicists think they are odd. We can only hope that this action converges to a real solution, although I would readily agree that the problem is complex. The last thing we need right now is for some obtuse person to make some acute remark on the subject. If the interested parties all think straight, and don't act purely on reflexes, there will be a revolution in the way mathematicians are treated. Sadly, however, this may be inconsistent with the results of similar problems previously encountered. We can only hope that there is no subset of mathematicians with divergent views willing to take this to the limit, and cancel out all support for their cause. The only rational way forward is to try and derive a natural solution that pleases the whole.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Let's hope this strike doesn't become too protracted, otherwise mathematics will not be able to be re-integrated into society... and we're all doomed 43.gif

The strike is not surprising, as there are always people trying to figure out an angle to everything. To the point, though, there could be inumerable negative consequences to all of this, so I wouldn't count on this being settled anytime soon. The only thing positive to come out of this will be the end of the strike itself. I just wonder if this walk-out was a calculated risk.

If you'll excuse me, I must now go and take my pi out of the oven.

To get to the point, we must draw the line somewhere. That much is plane. We must turn up the volume and integrate our cause into universal debate. The key is assosciativity. We must be commutative, Turing the world, and translating our demands so that everyone on this unit sphere knows that something is incomplete with mathematics. We must ennumerate our demands. We must prove that our needs are not imaginary, and repeat our message to the nth degree, our message which can be summed up thus: We can't take any more! We must act as one, and must not be divided. The time for axiom is now. Either you Cantor you can. Are we all set?

Oh, and remember this. Discrimination against mathematicians: just say {}.

I dare say a 10.gif is called for...

Protip: if you're going to make a pun out of that, do it for a situation where the spelling "plane" is appropriate. Substituting it for "plain" makes it too forced.

No, it's constructive criticism. A pun using the same spelling (e.g., "they're getting on a plane") would have been funnier.

Also, finally got bored with calling me "Dookie87", eh? 34.gif

You kept it up for several months. That's a decent run.

Duke87: Do you object to me shoving in Turing and Cantor?

What if the NAM goes broke or loses the strike? We don't have math in our school by then?

Too funny!!! 3.gif

I really did think the NAM was going on strike too. Scared me for a few seconds before the page loaded. 9.gif

Who needs math anyways? Math is my worst subject!

I cant believe the N.A. Mathematicians would go off on such an anti-positive tangent from the others!

I really hope the problems this strike may have is less than the Writer's Strike...but out of it i would hope that the new terms would be greater than the ones that set off the nation's top nerds.

I just hope that i won't feel the effects in my domain...

Don't worry, we're not going anywhere.  We've already got a decent contract.  49.gif   17.gif
