Shame he died, if I'm right he was the last of those incredibly powerful Kennedy's in politics to die. Are there any famous Kennedy's left out there? I believe on of the younger ones is planning to run for something in New York. Anyways it will be interesting to see who replaces him, I think Kennedy and Kerry have been massachusetts senators my whole life.

He didn't attend his sister's funeral, which many people took as an indication of just how far his illness had progressed.

I believe he is the last of his generation in that family but there might be an older sister who is still around.

Some of the next generation have gone into politics.   Some are actually doing their own thnig, whatever that turns out to be.

(I'm not a fan of pressuring people to go into the family business.)

The dyansty is over. He served either 37 or 47 years, I can't remember. He was very dedicated. Rest in peace.

I had a great deal of respect for him and his desire to improve the opportunity and fortune for average Americans.

He also played an important role in the shaping and development of a lasting peace in Northern Ireland and was highly influential in attracting new investment and development funding for Northern Ireland.

A truly great political mind who will be missed.

Though I completely disagreed with most of his views and policies, it is a bit sad to see the last prominent figure of that family pass.

Yep.  That was foremost in my mind from, oh, say 1981-1993 and felt painfully from 2001-2008.  Go figure.  I guess we should just all get together and cry about it like a bunch of newborns.

Other than that, I can say little lest I provoke SkiGeek's quick censoring fingers.

Too late.   You are both banned from posting in any memorial thread until such time that you can demonstrate that you can behave properly in such things.

I'm not saying that you have to like every person who has died but there are examples in this thread of how to behave when a person you disagree with has died.

You both have a political agenda to push.  Do not do it in memorial threads.

I thought about replying in a dedicated thread, but this will do. This wasn't identified in any way as a memorial thread, but rather posted in Current Events like any other news story. So, perhaps we should have a memorial section, where people may only say good things? Political giants are going to invite political responses.

Also, both Teddy and the other response you had taken issue with (Jacko), were both controversial figures. When they become front-and-center again, it's specious to pretend that the things that made them controversial to begin with died with them.

And, I'd bet money that if it were Bush, Cheney, or Rush Limbaugh that died, there would be a great deal more latitude given in the tone of responses. If it's a rule that we cannot speak ill of the dead on ST, then it's my belief that it should be clearly stated in the Site Rules. It is not, and so therefore your indignation comes off as arbitrary and capricious. Not being disrespectful, but calling it like I see it.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

I'm going to say this here so everyone can understand it.   This issue is common courtesy and simple decency.  There has been a trend of people being rude and snide while saying they are just being honest.   It is possible to be honest and still be polite about it.  As it says in the rules:

9.  Common Sense Rules.  Common sense rules, like politeness, are not explicitly stated but are still enforced.  19.gifquote>

If you wish to discuss politics, you are welcome to do so.  We have several threads about various political issues and a few catch-all threads as well.  However, it is not acceptable to dance on a person's grave, no matter who that person might be.

As to what it says or does not say in the rules, we deliberately did not include every possible incident that could arise.  We felt that was overly bureaucratic and cumbersome.   However, we did include this:

4.  Simtropolis Staff.   Administrators, moderators, and chat-operators are responsible for the smooth and efficient running of the site. The staff reserves the right to take whatever action is deemed appropriate in any given situation, regardless of whether there is a specific rule covering that situation or not.   If there is a misunderstanding or dispute, then please bring the issue up politely with that staff member in private.   In all matters, the decision of the administration is final. quote>

We could go through and change the rules to include every form of rude behavior.   However, we expect our members to be mature enough to know how to behave in a polite manner.

Sad. I did support many of his views and perspectives. I do hope that there will be somebody as energetic and as active as Ted Kennedy was. Perhaps that was why Ted Kennedy was pushing so hard for a replacement.

It is an end of a generation indeed, the Kennedy brothers.
