I usually have TV / game-related wallpapers but today I'll make an exception.

When I save my images as jpeg using MS, I don't notice any loss in quality.

Saved as PNG in MS Paint:

Saved as JPEG in MS Paint:

Saved as JPEG in GIMP at 100% quality:

If you can't notice a difference in any of those images, you may want to get your eyes checked.

Heres another "battlestar" desktop of mine (one near the top of this page):

The image

Click here for the NATIVE, or FULL RESOLUTION!  (1440x900)

Any problems with this image, Duke87?

-BTW, your second image looks a little blurry to me.  Is that the one that I should notice?

Well, it's pretty good. Not perfect, but so far as jpegs go for things other than actual pictures, that's about as good as it gets. Png would render it perfectly, but might also make the filesize too large to upload to most of those free services.

Yes!

See, the second one is the jpeg with MS Paint one. Jpeg with MS Paint is specifically what I said is verboten. Now, if you look closely at the third image (the jpeg with GIMP one), it too has flaws- this is most noticeable with the icons, particularly the Kye one. Still, it's a world better than the MS Paint jpeg. The first image, though - the png - is flawless. Everything in it looks precisely as it did on my screen when I took the screenshot. And that's why it's my preferred format. I generally only go for jpeg if the filesize of the png is too large (a 1280x768 png will exceed ImageShack's max 1500000 bytes sometimes, depending on how busy the image is.) or if for whatever reason the purpose I'm looking to use the image for does not permit it to be png (Simtropolis Avatars, I'm looking at you.)

Duke87, I never save in png, I almost always save to jpeg. Sometimes bitmap, but as far as png goes, some of the stuff that I have that was already png, the quality seems great. My eyes are fine lol, I can see the pixelation in png. I've only done a comparison with bitmap to jpeg with similar results.

There is absolutely no reason to save anything in bitmap unless what you intend to use it for specifically requires that format (like custom maps for SC4). Png nets you the same full quality but with a fraction of the filesize. I remember a while back I combed through all of my pictures and converted all the bitmaps to pngs- I cut over a gigabyte of data, and without actually losing anything.

As for almost always saving to jpeg, why? You're dithering your images unnecessarily. As you said, you "can see the pixelation in png". It's crisp and clear. Why settle for less?

Yes this is true about bitmap, but I only do this when playing around with photoshop. But just to make a point I went through the effort to show you jpeg has great quality and the file size is SMALLER not larger The test

There is almost no difference between the jpeg & png image.

Nope, I notice it too. I think you just have less than amazing eyes. Maybe you really should get them checked.18.gif

On the other hand, the pace where it's really noticeable is with the text under the actual picture. Actual pictures (or photoshoppings thereof, as is the case here) are what jpeg was designed for, so it handles them quite well so long as you save at 100% quality. Anything other than an actual picture, though (like, say.... a desktop screenshot 2.gif) is not what jpeg was designed for and thusly, even at 100% quality it can run the gauntlet from color bleeding crap to mostly decent but still imperfect.

Is such a subtle difference in quality worth the extra space for a picture posted on an internet forum? If this were something submitted for work or for class, I'd say go all out with whatever format.. but jeepers.. I didn't realize pictures of our desktops had to be of the highest quality, with absolutely zero dithering. 21.gif

My eyes are fine. That creation I uploaded was made using MS paint, and when I copy my desktop I use MS paint. It's faster, and the file size is low. You look back at some of my uploads, all jpegs. There is such a minimal difference that if it weren't being pointed out and talked about it wouldn't be noticed. With this said why use png when jpeg is of a smaller size.

Detect the format: Which is which? Click here-->My Desktop

The only way you can see the difference between a png & jpeg is either by zooming  or by viewing an oversized image (same difference). Anyway I've lost track of where this was going or what point is trying to be made here.

Actually Duke, I saved the picture I used for my background as a bitmap! It seems I accidentally saved the screenshot itself as a png.

Smsstevensms: A very nice car that is!

How does one accidentally save something as a png? I don't know of any programs where it's the default.... (MS Paint defaults to bitmap, GIMP to absolutely nothing)
