    Day 12

    Featured game:

The Pern Dragons travelled to St. Charles to take on the Kings.

Since we're visiting St. Charles, let's learn a little about this city. The population is reportedly around 64,000 in the last Census. The city's location on Southern Neptune Bay gives it nice, breezy coastal weather. Nearby cities include St. Peters and St. Paul.

St. Charles was founded in 1900 as an industrial and farming town with a small population. Today, it is entirely free of industry and almost entirely covered in mid-rises. The Gateway Arch was built here in 1966.

On to the game! Both teams' power play units got a workout this game. By the end, Pern had six power plays and St. Charles had the man advantage 4 times. The two teams combined for almost 20 minutes of power play, meaning one time or the other had a man advantage for a full third of the game.

Those power plays proved critical, as that is where the game was decided.

Pern scored first, on the power play, in the 10th minute of the game.

    prnstc015pw.jpg
^^^Kubina found himself right in front of the net when Nabokov coughed up a rebound.

That score held through the first period. In the second, the teams again saw their special teams on the ice.

    tripping1jd.gif
^^^Gauthier earns two minutes in the penalty box for tripping.

Late in the second period, St. Charles found itself with a 2-man advantage as two Dragons earned overlapping time in the penalty box. Despite frantic action in front of Pern's goal, the Kings were just unable to capitalize on this huge advantage, giving Pern a boost of confidence as the teams headed into the third period with the score 1-0 Dragons.

    prnstc027ij.jpg
^^^These two decided to solve a disagreement with their fists, each earning 5 minutes out of the game. The penalties cancelled each other so neither team had a power play, but they did add to the hefty penalty-minute totals for each team.

The Kings returned in the third to finish up a power play that had started late in the second period and were finally able to do what they couldn't do with the 5-on-3 advantage: tie the game.

    prnstc031cn.jpg
^^^Sillinger is able to tie the game up with a blistering shot from the face-off circle.

The teams still couldn't keep the play clean, and St. Charles offered up another power play, which the Dragons were happy to use to their advantage.

    prnstc048nr.jpg
^^^Lindros beats Nabokov on the power play.

Late in the game, Pern added an empty net goal to the final tally in this rough-and-tumble matchup. This was St. Charles' first loss in regulation of the season. They were completely outshot in this game, in part thanks to the time their players spent in the penalty box. Coach can't be happy tonight.

Pern moves to the top of the CentralEast.

    Day 13

    Featured game:

The Reggratta Vikings hosted the Stars tonight in the hopes of ending Sutherland's stellar start to the season.

Reggratta is located in Brostal, a large island divided into 4 states, Westchester, Oakbourne, North Hampshire and New South Yarra. Reggratta is in New South Yarra.

Contrary to popular belief, Reggratta does have four seasons but  the winter is mild and it doesn't snow there. Nonetheless, the new hockey league is very popular there and is considered a good winter addition to the number one sport, football, played in the summer. The Vikings are only one of several hockey teams in the area. After winning the Brostal Hockey League they decided to join the SHL and were welcomed with open arms. Residents were ecstatic when Reggratta was accepted into the league.

Here's a shot of the arena where the Vikings play thier home games, though there is some talk of replacing the facility.
    conv4.jpg

Finally, if you want to learn more about Brostal, visit here.

Well, this certainly should be an exciting game. As everyone should know, Sutherland has started off the season with a fantastic streak of wins. Nothing can last forever though, especially in this league, and Reggratta wasn't about to roll over without giving the Stars a run for their money.

The Vikings went on the offensive early with a power play just a few minutes into the first period. Their power play unit couldn't deliver, however, and their failure to score gave Sutherland a real morale boost.

The Vikings handed the Stars a power play a few minutes later, but before it could get underway, the Stars were whistled on a penalty and suddenly the game was 4-on-4 hockey. Reggratta seemed to have caught a break, but then they were called on a penalty and Sutherland found themselves on the top end of some 4-on-3 play. That left a lot of open ice, but the Stars just couldn't connect.

A final Reggratta power play late in the first period resulted in no score and both teams went to the locker rooms for the first intermission.

Early in the first, Sutherland was on the power play as neither team seemed able to clean up their play. However, their overconfidence almost cost them, as Reggratta got several good shots on goal short-handed though they were.

Back at 5-on-5, Reggratta was finally able to break the scoreless game when Cechmanek dropped a rebound right in front of the Vikings' Foote.

    sutreg019nm.jpg
^^^Reggratta was ready to take advantage of any foible by Cechmanek and caught a break on this one.

Reggratta now had to try to extend their lead while not allowing any holes to open up in their defense. Unfortunately Sutherland went all out and was able to even the score about five minutes later with a blistering shot from Iginla.

    sutgoal4xr.gif
^^^Iginla's masterful shot seen in slow motion.

Thus the teams again found themselves tied up. Both sides cleaned up their play, realizing a penalty could be disastrous at this point. Play remained physical, however.

    sutcheck4bk.gif
^^^A Viking takes a pounding. Both he and a panel of protective glass were knocked to the ground and play paused while officials replaced the glass.

Second intermission gave the teams a chance to rest and plan their strategies. Both teams came out strong in the third period and the battle was fierce. Both sides' defense deserves credit as they prevented any scoring through most of the third period.

Finally, late in the game, Reggratta was able to beat Cechmanek with a quick shot from in front of the net.

    sutreg025dh.jpg
^^^Lowry puts in an unassisted goal in a bid for the win.

Reggratta had less than two minutes to hold their lead, but almost immediately were called for a penalty, giving the Stars a power play at a crucial time. Sutherland pulled their goalie for an additional man and threw all they had at Reggratta's goal for the final minute and a half of play. Reggratta's Brodeur was somehow able to fend off this charge and Reggratta claimed the win.

Fans in Reggratta went wild, but there was cheering to be heard in more than one SHL city as Sutherland's streak had finally been ended.

    Featured game:

The Sephora Stingers hosted the Arcadian Fighting Flippers at the Energen Center tonight in a game eagerly anticipated by both sides after much trash talk flung back and forth.

Sephora is a city of about 1.5 million in the Pacific Northwest. Originally founded as New Boston due to the landscape's resemblance to a mirrored version of Boston, Mass., the city began as trading post with strong French and then English influences, then grew into a logging, shipping and industrial powerhouse. The city was soon named Sephora and became a destination for people heading west to seek their fortune and to immigrants from all parts of the world. The city is now a center of high technology and finance for the entire Pacific Rim, with important connections to other West Coast cities in America and Canada as well as Asian trade partners.

Residents are absolutely mad about sports and are excited about their new hockey team, the Stingers, as well as the recent aquisition of New Auckland's soccer team, which will be moved to Sephora in time for next season. Baseball (the Loggers) and football (the Griffins) also draw large crowds.

On to the game. Both teams came into the game ready to give it all for bragging rights. These teams have never faced each other and will only do so once during the regular season, yet somehow a rivalry has developed, even to the point of good-natured trashtalking between the GMs. Neither team wanted to hear about a loss for the rest of the season, so they set out to be the ones bragging.

The Stingers offered up a power play to the Fighting Flippas early in the game, and Arcadian was happy to oblige by putting a goal in at 6:09.

    affsep015nh.jpg
^^^An early goal shuts up the many Sephora fans filling the arena with their Eek eek eek impressions of Flipper.

Sephora pulled themselves together and set out to tie the game up. But the Stingers quickly gave the Fighting Flippers another power play, and Sephora's usually talented penalty kill unit again fell down on the job.

    affsep028yt.jpg
^^^Huselius catches the goalie out of position and puts the sting on Sephora.

That really shut the crowd up and Sephora went into the first intermission thoroughly demoralized.

The second period saw little excitement as the Fighting Flippers buckled down to protect their lead and Sephora vainly tried to poke holes in the defense. When the Stingers did get shots on goal, the Bulin Wall refused to let anything through.

The third period seemed to promise more of the same. Finally it was Arcadian's Ward who found an opening with a pass from Boguniecki to put the Flippas up 3-0.

    affgoal5sb.gif
    ^^^Easy as 1, 2, 3 for the Flippas.

Sephora was able to get on the board in the last minute of play, but it was much too late to launch a rally and the goal only served to prevent a complete shut out. Sephora headed to the showers with a 3-1 loss and the mocking words of Flipper in their ears.

    I haven't replied in a while, so....

I am loving the SHL, even though I am one of the suckiest teams out there. It doesn't matter. I love logging on to the internet everyday and see the status of the team.

Something like this should have been thought of ages ago...

Maybe other sports can be done this way, like racing?

I'm happy with that tie, better than a lost. Were leading in are divson with a 4 point lead, 1 point lead in the conference, and tied in the League... I like this team chances! 19.gif

    Day 14

    Today's games:

    fricenwinner4mo.jpg

Friverton edges out Centennial for a much-needed win, but it sure does muddy up the standings in their division.
Injury Report: Federov should be back in the lineup for the next game after recovering from a strained rib muscle.

Dynasty also gets a needed win, though they remain on the bottom of their division. That keeps Athena's Wingers in the middle of the pack in their division.
Injury Report: Athena Furiae's Peca out 7 weeks with a concussion.

Buffalo continues in the pattern they've set this season, and so do the Bears, who've earned the nickname Bad News Bears from some disappointed fans. Hopefully their luck will turn just like the fictional Bad News Bears. The win gives Buffalo the tie with June Isle and Sutherland for the top spot in the SHL after Sutherland's loss yesterday.
Injury Report: Buffalo's Stephens out 10 weeks with severe abdominal strain.

Cortezlynn City could use a win, but left with a respectable tie with the talented Black Lemon squad.
Injury Report: Cortezlynn City's Houlder should be back in the next game after recovering from a concussion.

The Wild could use a win as well, but the Eagles came away with this one to stay near the top of their division.

    Day 15

    Featured game:

The East Kingston Monarchs hosted the Amiton Aviators today in the capitol city of Lexmark.

    ARENA!!!.jpg

Here's some info on East Kingston from the team's GM:

The Monarchs' arena is flanked by a commercial district, apartments in the front, and the city limits behind it. Most people like the new team and the arena. It really brings the community closer together. Some, however, like the rich riverfront residents, are completely against it. The after parties cause some problems for the rich residents, such as break-ins into their homes by drunks. But police have stepped up security, and most problems are minimal. (Unless of course we win the championship! The police can't stop nuttin!) But most residents have recognized that they live in a fast growing city, and that has its positives and negatives. Local business owners love it! The arena is great for business.

See this link for more info on East Kingston.

This was a hard-fought game between two evenly matched teams that both wanted this win.

Amiton got on the board first with a hot shot from Lemieux off a feed from Zednik.

    amigoal8ft.gif
^^^Amiton draws first blood at 7:08 into the first period.

The rest of the first period saw lots of action as East Kingston tried to even up the score. They couldn't make it happen and went to the locker rooms down 1-0.

About a quarter of the way into the second period, the Monarchs were able to put a shot between the pipes to tie up the game.

    ekmgoal0gb.gif
^^^The Monarchs reign in front of goal.

The Aviators weren't inclined to lose their lead and answered back a few minutes later with another goal to pull ahead 2-1.

    amiekm012lj.jpg
^^^The puck slips by East Kingston's goalie.

This neck-and-neck battle wasn't over by a long shot as East Kingston came right back to tie things again.

    amiekm027mt.jpg
^^^Langenbrunner picks up a rebound and puts it in net.

That was a lot of action for just a few minutes in the middle and late part of the second period. It seemed the teams had thrown all they had into the game and the rest of the second and most of the third period was a much more settled game as the teams worked methodically to break through the other teams' defense without opening up holes in their own.

It looked like this one would go to overtime until Zednick found an opening and put one in goal with less than a minute left in the game.

    amiekm039fr.jpg
^^^The go-ahead goal came with little time for East Kingston to recover.

The Monarchs pulled their goalie in a desperate attempt to take the game to the overtime that seemed assured a few moments before. They were unable to force the overtime and Zednick added a late empty-net goal for the hat trick, racking up a final score that belied the close nature of this game.

June Isle posts another win. Their only loss this season was in overtime. Hersonburg would have liked the win to take charge of their division, but with the loss, the CentralWest will remain muddled.
