No one has the Avs. You're right, some people have altered NHL teams but most people have their own logos. If you tell me who your favorite player is, I can tell you who has him (had to be from 03-04 season, though). Otherwise, root for all of us!

So The Dragons are  road team.

 

 

The 17k fans in  The Weyr ( only 10 Simolians to get in during road games !) watched the drama unfold on the huge Plasma Screens.

Sunday was also 1 Simolian Dragon Dog night at The Wyer and The Fans went through 35,000  Dragon Dogs!

 

Early estimates of  TV viewing show 1.2 Million homes In Pern City were tuned to the Sunday Night Primetime game and 1.9 Million Region wide.

 

Seems Hockey is Doing well in Pern City even with The Baseball Dragons playing sunday  as well.

^^^Yup, auto fantasy draft at the beginning of the season. I just randomized the draft and kept clicking randomly re-order until my team was in the last slot.

^^^Today was the final day of the SHL season-opening street parties. Every team has now had their home opener. The SHL hopes the fans in each SHL city had a great time and again thanks those cities for their participation in the league.

 

 

Featured game:

 

 

 

The Sutherland Stars hosted the Sephora Stingers at the Forum of Sutherland. The game was threatened with cancellation when it was discovered the Sutherland jerseys had mistakenly been produced with a strange word -- Dallas -- above the star logo, but eventually it was decided to go on with the game.

 

From the start, it was clear this would be a close, physical game featuring attack after attack on each goal. Sephora faced two power plays as Sauer was twice called for interference, but Turek and the penalty kill lines did their job. The first period was filled with brilliant play, but it wasn't until the final seconds of the period that a goal was tallied, with Sephora's Mogilny taking a golden pass from Weight and beating Cechmanek with a beautiful backhand.

Both teams came back for the second period hoping to score quickly -- Sephora to expand their lead and Sutherland to get back in the game. Both teams were frustrated in their attempts and headed to the third period with the score still 1-0.

Early in the third, Sutherland was finally able to even up the score as Turek failed to contain a shot by Numminen at 3:04.

Sephora answered that goal ten minutes later as Kuba scored on a breakaway.

Entering the final minute of play, Sutherland pulled their goalie to get an additional offensive player and threw everything they had at Sephora's goal. Turek fended off shot after shot and the Stingers were practically celebrating when Sanderson shot a fireball from the faceoff circle that evened the game with just three seconds left, forcing an overtime!

Both teams came on strong in overtime, but Sephora was clearly rattled and gave up the game-winning goal to Numminen at 3:06. Sutherland had successfully robbed Sephora of a victory in a shocking comeback.

The Cristobal Bears hosted the Hersonburg Raptors at the Cristobal Hockey Arena. What say we learn a little about Cristobal first?

 

^^^The site of winter excitement in Cristobal now that SHL hockey has come to town.

 

^^^The Cristobal Hockey Arena is part of a larger complex that includes the Cristobal Athletic Center, a truly multipurpose sports facility.

 

City leaders report that Cristobal is expanding at a phenomenal rate; it is all they can do to lay out transportation and other infrastructure to keep up with the growth. There are still many affordable homes in the city, however.

 

Well, let's see what this game has in store for the fans from Cristobal.

 

The first period didn't give them much to cheer about. Both teams played well, but Hersonburg was clearly dominant and it appeared Cristobal was just lucky to end the period 0-0.

 

Entering the second period, it was the Bears' turn to dominate, thanks to several power plays. Cristobal fired shot after shot, but Hersonburg's penalty killing unit was able to fend the Bears off.

 

^^^A roughing call that gave Cristobal a power play. They weren't able to capitalize on it.

 

After fighting off the power plays, it was Hersonburg that scored first as Devereaux found the net at 12:10 into the second period.

Less than a minute later, Cristobal was able to tie things up with a goal from Laaksonen.

Hersonburg answered back less than three minutes later on a power play. Demitra was able to pluck the puck from traffic right in front of the net and smoke one past the goalkeeper.

Both teams headed for the locker room for the intermission with the chance to take home a win. The third period would be crucial in deciding who it would be.

 

Demitra would start to provide an answer four minutes after connection on a smooth pass from Savard. Hersonburg moved ahead 3-1. Five minutes later, Brendl added to the tally. The game was falling apart for Cristobal and the hometown fans were in despair. The Bears had just 11 mintues to come back from a 4-1 deficit.

 

They pulled together and fought hard through that stretch.

 

^^^Cristobal's Pronger delivers a thunderous check to Hersonburg's Letowski. If you look closely, you can see Letowski's helmet, knocked off by the impact, flying into the air.

 

But they just couldn't make anything happen. Hersonburg put the final nail in the coffin at 19:26 for a 5-1 final.

Unfortunately for Hersonburg, this was a costly win. An X-ray after the game showed a seemingly innocuous hit had given Demitra a hairline jaw fracture.

Day 9

 

 

Featured game:

 

The Buffalo Sabres hosted the Rude Bruins tonight at HSBC Arena.

 

The City of Buffalo is the central city of the Grid Region, an area notable because all the roads, avenues, and highways form a grid. Begun as an experiment, city leaders report that so far Buffalo and the Grid Region have no traffic problems.

The Grid Region is one laden with hockey-crazed denizens.  In the offseason, Buffalo's population sits comfortably at around 200,000.  However, during the season, Buffalo's population skyrockets to almost 500,000.  How's that for fanatacism?

Buffalo's HSBC Arena is in a central location in Buffalo - near the central highway interchange.  The HSBC Arena has great access to mass transit:  several subway lines, several bus routes, and a plethora of parking spaces. 

The Arena seats 18,690 fans, features an 8-sided Jumbotron, a sports bar, and what is believed to be the largest in-arena team merchandise store in the entire SHL. 

 

Sounds like a great place for a game. Let's see whether all those fans went home happy tonight.

 

The start of the game surely must have pleased them. Just over 2 minutes into the game, Buffalo found themselves on the board as Briere landed one between the posts.

 

^^^Briere sends the crowd into an uproar with an early goal.

 

Five minutes later, Smyth gave Buffalo a 2-0 lead, scoring on a power play.

 

^^^Rude handed Buffalo a power play at a crucial time, and Buffalo knew what to do with it.

 

It took Rude awhile to recover from this one-two punch, but eventually they rallied, with Rasmussen taking a beautiful pass from Rasmussen and scoring a goal at 15:29 to put the score at 2-1 Buffalo.

Near the end of the period, the Bruins tied the game up with another goal, this time with Roberts at the helm on a breakaway.

 

^^^The Bruins quiet the crowd with a late-period goal to even up the score.

 

The teams returned from intermission to a long scoreless period.  The tension mounted as the tied game dragged on. It was Smyth again who broke the tie, scoring an unassisted goal at 15:58 to make the score 3-2.

 

^^^Smyth puts Buffalo back on top. The crowd fell in love with Smyth, chanting hat trick, hat trick in the hopes Smyth would score a third goal.

 

Less than a minute later. Weinhandl added another Buffalo goal and the teams left the ice for second intermission with Buffalo leading 4-2 and the hometown fans going wild.

 

Returning for the third period, the Rude Bruins did all they could to rally. But the Buffalo defense was able to shut down all their efforts, and the final score was 4-2. The Rude Bruins are without a win or even a point in their opening three games.

Arcadia gets a costly win, as Rupp was injured in pre-game warm-ups and star LW Kariya suffered a nasty cut to his hand during the game.
