me either. I'm pretty sure you can't "modd" sc2k except unless you cracked the game. SCURK only lets you edit the graphics of a fixed set of building and nothing else.

A renewed version of Sim City 2000, that would be a great idea. But I don't think there will be any change to that. The game is to old to re-design and is just. Not 2009...xD But still, I recommend people to play Simcity 3000, if they can't play 4, because the game is freaking awesome9.gif Also the terraforming tool is way easier9.gif

Before I start, am I in the right forum? I was a bit confused...

Anyway, has anyone ever heard (or have) of SimCity 2000: Network Edition? I've heard that it's the rarest Maxis game, and many SimCity fans have never heard of it.

EDIT: I'm looking for a site I can download the full version for free. So far it's living up to it's title of "Rarest Maxis Game Ever".

I have not heard of this game until now, but I think i found its website!9.gif

    link

Here is something taken off the site:

"Probably the rarest Maxis game in existence today, SimCity 2000 Network Edition is the excellent multiplayer version of Will Wright's popular SimCity 2000. Released in 1996, the game's sales figure was so disappointing that Maxis decided to pull it off the shelves in less than a year after release. Worse, the version has never been included in any SimCity 2000 compilation that Maxis released, such as the CD Collection or any subsequent shovelware. As a result, many die-hard SimCity fans are not aware that this superb version ever existed - well, until now 4.gif"

Ah, SimCity 2000 Network Edition. I remember the computer my dad bought in 1997 actually had this game preinstalled! But I didn't like it very much at the time because I was the only person I knew of who played simcity (still am in RL in fact) and we didn't have internet at the time anyways.

Part of the reason I didn't like it was because I was 8 at the time. I hadn't really built any successful cities at the time (much less any without using cheats) in SimCity 2000. Also, it was a bit confusing to start up. The Start Menu folder had two programs, SC2KN Client and SC2KN Server. They're pretty explanatory now, but I had no idea what those words meant then. The way to start and play the game was to use the Client version (which also loaded the server window), but sometimes I clicked on Server and the only thing that came up was the server window (which had things like your IP address so you could let others join your server)

That picture from the link above was from the opening video of the game. The video was more or less just that screen with some music. Then the main menu came up. Pretty much the same, but you also had a button for network play.

Once in the game, you had to decide where you wanted your city to go, and then actually buy the land before you could build anything (another tripping block for me!). You even had to buy land on water to build the seaport piers if I remember correctly. It cost 10-20 dollars per tile, and it would also take a few months before you could start building. You could also sell land for some cash. And finally, you voted on enacting or unenacting ordinances, and if the motion passed, it was carried out next year (in single play, it always passed 3.gif). After that, it was more or less SimCity 2000. There was also a chat window and a trade window. Chat window was used for talking and entering in the one cheat in the game (for all to see that you cheated 3.gif). Trade window allowed you to give others power, water, and maybe even civic service coverage (like fire protection or education). I don't think you had to have an actual power line, but then again I never played this game online.

Once you exited the game, you were left with the server window, which was where the save and load options were. Thinking about that makes me wonder whether anybody managed to create some masterpiece of a city with the Network edition...

Two more differences. One was that the user interface was different; no more floating toolbar! Everything was on the side (you can see a screenshot at the Underdogs page inside the link above). The other difference was that the music was fixed in this game. In SC2K, the music stopped after playing one song, and some of the midi files in the game folder never got played. In SC2KN, the music kept going, and all the songs played, so I heard some new music playing that game.

Unfortunately, a couple of years ago that computer was sent to a recycling facility, so I don't have the game anymore 15.gif8.gif. The closest I can find is the demo here. One problem: The demo ONLY works for 95/98 and maybe ME, I'm not sure). If you try it on any other OS , it won't work, even in compatability mode!

Guess that was a bit of my childhood there...

I like the fact that on the SC2K manual, it says "The Ultimate City Simulator." That ultimate needs an antipen- in front of it, now. Also, on the case, the last line on the back said "If it was any more realistic, it would be illegal to turn it off."

I guess, for the times, it was pretty realistic.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I want to thank the person who found simcity 2000 for free at abandonware. But after I had download it and tried to

extract it(Unzip It), it told me it was unable to run in fullscreen mode. I get that with all Old Dos Games I have vista

    windows also.

SC2K was sweet. I played it non-stop before I got SC3K. I had the Urban Renewal version, and I just had so much fun with it. Now that I think of it, I still have the CD and everything! I think it's time to pop in in the laptop and take a little trip down memory lane.
