I think each word allots a certain amount of keys.  I've seen three of them already.  One has been used up; one is probably nearing the end of its life (if it isn't already dead), and one is still rather fresh from what I know.

For what I have seen until now, there is NO pop-up or special box.

The codes are words put inside a normal page among the rest of the text and they can be recognized since they are in a phrase like " *** is a Codeword".

Just got my key from this site http://www.onlinewelten.com/win/226-cities-xl-beta-keys/ just register and click on the link in the email they send you and then login and it will assign you a key. Use google translator to translate the web pages. game is downloading now. Good Luck!

It wasn't that hard to find a code... I found mine within like 5 minutes... just look at the normal text written on the site. The codeword I found was not in any special letters that caught my eye. In fact, I had to read it like 3 times to make sure it was a codeword.
