I read in Simcity4.co.uk: quote

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=55632

"The link above says that a sequel to SimCity 4 is definitely in development, but we cannot confirm any screenshots for a while. It also talked about how Will Wright commented on how complicated the game was for new users. I’m guessing he would want to collect brand new gamers to join the Maxis bandwagon and also please existing maxis fans. The only way to gain these new players, keep Maxis’ developed reputation for detailed gaming and go the ‘right way’ into the future is to adapt this new intelligent code into the SimCity franchise."

Has anyone heard about it?

Yes the sequel has been out for some time, it's called SimCity Societies, but most fans of SimCity don't think of it as SimCity 5, more like some extra game, because it does not have the same customisablity, game play, depth, and well simcity-ness. I got it near the release date played it a bit for a week and haven't played it since. Also it wasn't developed by Maxis, but by Tilted Mill.

Most people are now looking to CitiesXL, but not as a replacement. Whatever City Builder games come along SimCity 4 will still have the community and people playing it.

Maxis are off working on spore now so if they do return to simcity i reckon that it will be a long overdue second expansion pack for SC4

Spore has already been released, and since Maxis technically no longer exist; SC5 won't be the same as the previous titles. Will Wright doesn't even work with EA anymore.

Anyway, with custom content, we pretty much already have SC5. 2.gif

The lack of Maxis being its own seperate entity means they are condemmned day and night to Work on The Sims and Spore expansions. Sim City looks like one of these games thats going to be neglected for a decade like Red Alert was, and then EA will decide to cash in on the aging fanbase and provide us with a cheap and nasty sequel.

EA never like to work hard on anything. City Simulation games are massivley unwieldy to produce, and coupled with the onslaught of more and more intense 3D graphics mean that as each year goes by Games are becoming more demanding and difficult to create. A Sim City sequel is very unlikely... but and equally good game could just be around the corner, you never know.

But surely this 2004 announcement wasn't referring to SimCity Societies. This SimCity was being developed by Maxis, not the hack job done in circa 2006-2007 by Tilted Mills. What happened to the original SimCity 5, that's my question.

They hadn't started development of the new game back then, they were simply working out a "New Direction"... the result of that "New Direction" could well have been SCS. Its a simple case of EA wanting Maxis to work on the things that will make the most money -The Sims and Spore - Instead of wasting their time on a SC sequel that will inadvertently be too complicated to attract a lot of new players... because obviously, players are dumbasses.41.gif

Sadly enough, there probably won't be any Simcity 5 the way things are going. Spore and the Sims are examples of more "shallow" games that are simpler to play, understand, and master overall. Simcity games have never been so user-friendly or simple. Nor will any SC game sell anywhere near as much as the Sims. The Sims series sells in the tens of millions - over a hundred million if you believe EA. How much will an SC sell? Hundreds of thousands of copies; perhaps a few million?

Sadly, money, not genunine innovation or a desire to make good quality products that people will enjoy for years and years runs this world. That's why the term "planned obsolescence" was invented.

I put "simcity 5" into Bing and I got this:

    http://www.allgame.com/game.php?id=51207

It says (or I think it says) that SC5 is coming out fourth quarter this year, so isn't that the holiday season?  But I'm not gonna get my hopes up until I see it at Best Buy or somewhere else! =D

That's funny, Ndragonawa. Weird, but it's probably just the website making a prediction about a sequel. I've seen them do that before without real confirmation.

I would like it if they made 5... whether or not Maxis made it... as long as it continued the style of Simcity. The problem with SCS is that it's nothing like earlier versions and i don't even consider it canonically part of the Simcity franchise except by name. Sort of like the daughter of a King marrying a foreign Prince, she takes his name, and i reckon that princess is SCS. 5 could easily be created with modern resources if a game company put their effort into it, but obviously as has been stated before money is the big issue. One of my ideas was for city sim fans to make their own game using the fanbase as the resource rather than an individual game company, that could theoretically create a better game as the fanbase is obviously bigger than a company in number, i would be sure. However that would require infrastructure and of course i imagine there'd be bickering over many elements and much indecision and un-cohesiveness. Thus i have very little hope for a Simcity 5, or even a city sim better than 4, at least in near future.

Let's face it th great age of city-builder is over and simcity, the reason behind it in the first place has degraded and turned to dust..........15.gif Without Wright backing it, any predecessor of SC4 it would most likely be rush to completion and tarnish what left of it legacy.

Don't know about that.  Usually when game designers leave and form a new company (I've noticed this happen when a larger corp. moves in) they still carry on their older series, only now they don't have to take orders from the parent company.

Will Wright said himself Sim City 4 had worked the franchise into a corner, so I doubt he'd back a new one.

And, no company is going to invest in such a project in the recession, seeing as a loss can easily be made in what is pretty much a specialist gaming sector.

A dedicated fan base would buy a complex one, but that would mean the mass audience won't buy it, meaning the budget would have to be low, meaning the quality would suffer, unless developed by a load of cheap professionals.

I like the idea of a game being developed by Simtropolis, maybe if they recruited a SC5 team... although it would take a very very very long time, and it would all have to done without pay, so I doubt many people would be motivated to do so.

the idea of city sim fans making it could work. you'd need infrastructure... the internet is that infrastructure. you'd have a website or something for it... and you'd need to decide what language to script it in and etc... the grunt work (actual coding) wouldn't be so hard... think about it. MAXIS employed how many people to make simcity 2000? I don't know, but if that number is larger than the amount of city sim fans online then my names Courage the Cowardly Dog. And it's not. I reckon having a large fanbase working on the game you could ignore monetary issues as each participant would be doing it for the purpose of the cause and the workload per person would be lessened due to the large number involved. indeed the game could be much better than one made by a profit driven company, as the workers could invest more time into stopping bugs, improving it, and creating it.

if you want simcity 5 all you have to do is make it, although obviously due to copyright reasons we'd have to call it something different

I doubt if there ever wil lbe a SimCity 5. There really isn't any way to truly improve on what Rush Hour and the various modders and BATers have brought to the game. Not to mention that a new SimCity would have to be at least twice the load on computers, so older PC's couldn't handle it. Thats a good chunk of the fanbase right there. You'd have to appeal to the original fans and attract new audiences. Not easy (look at Societies). Then you'd have to finance it in the middle of a crap time in the economy.

But, if you want a new play experience, go play Cities XL. I found it rather disappointing, but somebody must like it.

I saw Sim City 5 in a dream last night

i held the box and played the game...

i dont know where to start with it so ill start with the box.

it says on the front : 'Sim City 5'

there is a picture of a planet with what looks like space elevators and satalites going off into space and a plant covered in all sorts of differnet buildings...

on the back it says : "Emerge!"

Emergence engines take hold as you are given the power to control property on a massive online world map.

Zone over 40 unlockable zone types including under water and sub-terrarian zones

As sims gain experience there is no telling what rewards may be unlocked...

    "Prepare"

Build in a world with no walls... want a road to run off to nowhere? can you afford it?

connect to your neighbors and friends... build nations together with citys that are intermingled

think you are good at balancing the books? a city could be looking to hire you with great profit to be earned.

    "Coexist"

conflict resolution never got so real with the new war engine

be an engineer of the world and build buildings into the heavens or down into the abyss

incorporates aspects of every maxis "sim" game

Game contains tutorial featured in blockbuster hit "Sim City" starring Bruce Willis

There was also a thing about offline multi player augmented reality game... 'build a city anywhere'

    our world is a simcity

China should make SC5. They got tons of money. They're not in recession and the copyright laws isn't so enforced. They could literally steal SC4 game and improve on it and probably brand it as some Chinese sounding name.
