So, considering that Simtropolis is a website accessed all across the globe, I am sure we have speakers of many languages.  And while the United States (where I happen to live) may be one of the most monolingual countries on earth (although I think the UK officially takes the cake there) and knowing multiple languages may seem pretty rare (depending on where you live in the US), in many countries knowing more than one language is considered the norm.

So what languages do you speak, study, have studied, ect?  How did you learn these languges (native, school j/k there 3.gif, immersion, classes, self study, ect)?

Right now, I only speak English.  However, I recently set it upon myself to change this. 19.gif  My future language goals include: Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and German.

I studied French and Japanese in school, but never got very far with either.

I started with Portuguese and have been studying at home in my spare time for the past 3 months:

Eu estou aprendendo falar Português.  Ainda estou longe de fluência.  Fui estudar en casa para três meses agora.  Eu amo Português e acho que é uma bela língua!  Algum dia eu espero visitar Brasil e Portugal.

I am learning to speak Portuguese.  I still am far from fluency.  I have been studying at home for three months now.  I love Portuguese and think it is a beautiful language!  Someday I hope to visit Brasil and Portugal.

If you want, write a bit in any language you speak.  I know this is an English forum, so be nice and include a translation.

English of course,

Deutsch, wie die meisten deutschen 4.gif - German, as most Germans do 4.gif

et un peu de Francais - and a bit of French (5 years in school, but in the second year we had a really boring teacher, I learned near to nothing so the "base" was missing for the rest)

A native English speaker here.

Rudimentary formal Hawaiian was a requirement of elementary school, but I have forgotten most of it, and unlike my many local cousins, I never really picked up Hawaiian Pidgin.  I also studied several years of German and immersive Russian in school, and a smattering of Japanese elsewhere.  Unfortunately, these are not languages commonly used where I live, so after many years of not using them I am reduced to lots of  "I don't know/understand" clipped responses like "nichts verstehe," "ya ne znayu," or "wakarimasen."

One of my neighbor's elderly parents speak only Spanish, a language I have little experience in despite being in Texas.  When their dog dug under the fence and got in my yard, I had to somehow communicate to them the problem, and in exasperation, I was doing charades by panting on my knees in front of their door in imitation of a dog.  What is "crazy haole neighbor" in Spanish?  I eventually got a friend to teach me a rough "su perro está en mi patio," and so the longest useful and complete phrase I can say in Spanish without vulgarities is "your dog is in my yard."

Native Croatian speaker, but obviously I speak English which is my working language here on board. I understand German and speak very little as I already forgot most of it, learned it for 6 years. And Italian very little, learned it for 2 years.

Ah yes, I can read and write Arabic, but I don't understand anything except few words. I taught myself this. Didn't do any classes but plan to in the near future. Or I'll just continue to learn from language learning software.

So the UK is monolingual.

Shhh! don't say that too loud in front of any Welsh speakers, or any gaellic speaking Scots for that matter. Not to mention

 any Irish speakers.

I speak English obviously, lol, but I'm learning Spanish (and hope to be fully bilingual in the future...) and I'm also learning my mother's native tongue, Polish. My mom also speaks Russian fluently so maybe I'll learn that too... 3.gif

I was born in Australia, so surprise, suprise, English is my mother tongue! ????????????, ????????.But I've lived in the People's Republic of China for the last 5 years, so I can also speak Putonghua (Mandarin, if you have no clue about China)......  I live in Guangzhou (old Canton), but I can only speak a little Cantonese.... I'm absolutely certain the sounds Cantonese people make in their language aren't natureal human sounds! 3.gif

Oh... if the Chinese characters don't come up properly, it's a translation of the next sentence!

I'm a language-aholic 2.gif

I know 5 languages well, but I'm learning a 6th one now 9.gif

I speak English, Irish, German, Japanese, Mandarin, and I'm starting Cantonese.

I learned English and Irish from home (native languages), German from school and my German friends online, Japanese and Mandarin from online and books. Cantonese is going to be learned from my friend in Guangdong and from books 4.gif

I'm only 15!
